Malones has closed. Made reservation but arrived to locked doors and a “we are closed” sign.
Enjoyed our first time at Malone's so much that we made the commute from D.C. again. The food is excellent--fresh and well prepared; excellent sauces and seasonings. Appealing physical plant: comfortable, quiet booths for dining; trellised patio area; fun exterior (restaurant is a former old Church). Nice surroundings also, convenient to the shops and neighborhoods of Old Town Manassas.
First visit. Well pleased. 5 Star Restaurant, reasonable prices for excellent quality. Everything first class!
Malone's is our "go to" place when we have out-of-town guests. We know they will be impressed with Malone's excellent food and lively entertainment at the "church!"
Food was under cooked and cold, the menu was limited and there were unusual ingredirects in the salads specifically anchovies and pork bellies. Service was over extended. All in all a great expensive disappointment, go to Ruth Chris instead, same price way better quality.
Food was excellent. Staff was exceptionally accommodating. Overall a very pleasant experience.
We had lunch there a couple of times a couple of years back and thought it was amazing. We needed a spot for dinner in the same general vicinity and remembered Malones. I should have checked the recent reviews. We were not happy with the experience. The food was "fine" but not worth the price and not like it was a couple of years ago. First, the wedge salad is described as containing "baby romaine" and "bleu cheese". When served, it was served with iceberg lettuce (typical for a wedge) and parmesan. The lobster ravioli was swimming in heavy sauce - something delicate like a lobster ravioli should not be smothered in a heavy sauce. Now for the short rib pasta - what I envisioned was a braised short rib that was in the pasta sauce. What I got was a plate of pasta with sauce with a large lump of fatty, not very tender short rib sitting on top of the pasta. The short rib was almost inedible though the pasta and sauce were good. We got the impression that things weren't flowing smoothly in the kitchen - some items weren't available, some didn't come out when we ordered them and then there were the issues just described. Not going back.
We're never disappointed with Malone's! Great food, great service. And don't skip a visit to the upstairs "Church!" DK's Wolf was rocking the place!
While the service was great the food was not good at all. The lobster bisque was thin and fishy. The salmon I ordered was under seasoned and came in some sort of sauce that was more soupy than sauce, the bed of kale needed to be cooked some more and in one bite of it I crunched into something gritty. My husband had the steak and it was cooked to the wrong temperature and flavorless. Was so disappointed especially for the price we paid for everything!!! Oh and the bead basket was pitiful...it was like they found a small leftover of a baguette and cut three slits into it, warmed it up and served it to us. The bread should have been an indicator of the meal to come.
It was good, but not worth the price. Several of us had the filet but it was nothing special. One lady in our party sent her steak frites back 2xs. The first time it was because pepper was all she tasted and the second time the meat didn't taste right. Two other people at the table tried it and said the same thing. Overall, I would go back, just wouldn't be my first choice. Very expensive and nothing special.
We enjoyed the evening, but felt the A/C wasn't wprking up to par, as it got just a little warm...not bad, but we noticed it.
Sitting outside (with the umbrellas with built in lighting) was lovely on this breezy July night, but the umbrellas hold the smoke and many of the outdoor diners (no bar scene outside) were smoking, so that was almost like being in a smoking restaurant.
When I was a kid, we had 'steaks' from the commissary. They were 1/2 thick on a curved bone, much like the pork chops we had on some other nights. The $38 "ribeye" that was placed in front of me was exactly that. I was blown away because I was anticipating something an inch thick with a beautiful color after a long work day, certain it would be something amazing with the mushroom demi glace that was to accompany if they were asking this price for it.
The owner or manager was familiar with a number of folks there, even picking up a child at a different table, but he did not stop in on us as I certainly would have said something at the time. After he spoke to every other table, I figured I would leave a review instead.
We were hungry and, thank Heaven, had only ordered one steak and a salad to split so we chalked it up to a bad night. Honestly, the meat was the equivalent price to a steak at Ruth Chris, and I didn't expect that level of flavor, but this was half the size AND half the flavor. Very disappointing. I really hope they reevaluate the pricing or their supplier.
I think it would be very fun to go to the bar there, the music was loud and people were coming in droves, all looking happy, but for dining, it is severely overpriced (for what it is).
The building is very cool, dining room and bar.
Malone's is simply the best dining venue in Old Town! The food is excellent, and the after dinner live music in "The Church" is the perfect finish to a great night out!
Brought my family here who was visiting from California. They were stunned by the beauty and history of the renovated church that is now a fine dining restaurant and bar. I had the bone-in Ribeye which was cooked perfectly and they had the salmon dish which also came with shrimp. They raved about how perfect the salmon was and how the ambiance in the dining room was so comfortable. Before our entrees, we all had soup, which the homemade corn chowder with crab made a big impression. It’s also with noting that there is an affordable and extensive kids menus for the little ones. When you come here...order the Truffle Mac and Cheese...you will not regret it.
We had a very enjoyable brunch on the patio. We were the only group seated outside, and service was a bit slow. We we were not in a hurry, but feel we may have been "forgotten" by our server as she had additional patrons inside. But the food was excellent (try the grilled pineapple and Malone's Maryland Benedict dish!) and we had a very nice time.
Great place right in the heart of old Manassas! Highly recommend it!
The food was excellent but the service was incredibly slow.
Great brunch for Fathers Day and a birthday! Great vibe and atmosphere!
They were extremely busy this particular Saturday evening but the staff made every effort to keep us informed and waited upon with a friendly apology. I was a bit disappointed their catch of the day was not available (ran out? Misprinted menu? Not sure). I settled on a salad and the French onion soup, which was quite satisfying. We enjoyed sitting outside and will definitely go back.
Best service I've had in awhile, food was less to be desired. Overpriced for the quality and creativity. Cool building. Dated inside, pretty patio was our option.
Great time as always ,celebrating a landmark birthday and arranged for a flower delivery to the restaurant , it was handled very well by the staff and the flowers arrived at our table upon our seating. The service was just about to mount and unobtrusive to the conversation going on at the table.
Staff were attentive and professional. Food was delicious. Great evening. Thanks!
It was Mother's Day at 4:15PM. The room was not full, many empty tables. The hostess sat both of us at a table under a set of stairs. The table wobbled and the chairs were unstable. I asked to move to another table and we moved ourselves over to the new table that had better chairs and table but didn't have serve setups (silverware, etc). We were served water after 10 minutes but not given setups until we took two sets from our previous table.
The printed menu for the day was one price with three choices for salad, main course and dessert. The wait for water was longer than normal but the wait for drinks, salad, main course, and dessert for much longer than normal.
The waitress for a noisy family of six came over and asked us to be more quiet while we were waiting for the salad to be served. Our mood changed from happy to be enjoying Mother's Day together to sad. We both said to each other that we would finish the meal but not ever return.
The meal was so-so, nothing special. Not worth the money or the poor treatment.
We went on "prom night". No specials and my wife's bone in ribeye came without a bone. The reasons provided that followed made it worse. They comped the $36 meal and then it appears my 10% tip was jacked to 20% on my credit card. Not a fun evening.
When my friend and I received our steaks, they were overcooked. The owner visited our table and in a very short period of time had replaced our meals with perfectly cooked filets. He was very gracious and apologetic. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. The food is fabulous.
My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary. We ordered drinks first and they forgot the olives in my dirty martini. They then brought the 3 olives that come with the drink on a paper napkin, with the blue cheese touching the napkin.
They forgot the bread for the table, which we had to ask for. We ordered a salad to share and they forgot to bring us share plates.
I'm vegetarian for religious reasons and also, by choice. So, I specifically asked for vegetarian options for my entrée. I was told the Mac and cheese with truffle oil could be made with vegetables instead of the bacon.
The person who brought out out food placed it on the table and said the Brussels sprouts will be right out, when we didn't order any. We had to talk to our waiter, who happened to be the manager, to make sure we don't get charged for it.
The first time, they brought the Mac and cheese with bacon in it, along with vegetables. I started eating and realized it was bacon only after I bit into it. I was mortified!
They replaced the Mac and cheese and forgot the truffle oil in the second round. I gave up at this point. They offered to remake it, but I just couldn't eat it anymore. So, they boxed it up. I have yet to see if this version is what it is supposed to be!
They did comp the Mac and cheese and offer us desserts at the end of the day in an attempt to repair a lost cause of an evening. I would have preferred that they comp out whole meal instead of giving us desserts that we weren't going to order anyway. Oh, they brought us the cover that holds the check without the check! We actually had to ask to pay for this experience. How about that! Even then, they did not offer to comp the whole meal.
It is not just all the mishaps, but making me eat meat, when it is against my religion, is a huge deal and it wasn't recognized as such. Needless to say, we were disappointed, to put it lightly, with this whole experience. We will not be coming back.
The breakfast buffet is terribly over priced for typical breakfast buffet items. The bar upstairs in the evening has a better atmosphere and much better prices (although not open for breakfast).
Dinner was good...few discrepancies in size of steaks ordered. Seemed odd to have one steak with a sauce on top ~ not advertised. Other steak was 1/4 size and no sauce. None of the steaks had any sort of sides listed on menu, so we added starch and vegetable. Were completely surprised to find mashed potato puree and roasted root vegetables plated with steaks. The fish was delicious ... but had no paring of sides at all. Confusing and incomplete menu. Made us uncertain of what we were getting. Waiter was probably new. Afraid he was going to cut himself when he tried to use corkscrew blade to remove wine "top"...we ordered Meiomi ...which is a twist off top.
We had a nice evening catching up with old friends. Restaurant staff just needs some brush up on meat cuts and plating.
Very nice layout and decor. Service was very attentive. Ribeye steaks and short rib tagliolini were excellent. Seared salmon was too salty and the roasted brussel sprouts were not roasted at all, just boiled. Wine list was good from a selection and value perspective.
Great food and even better service. Our server, Avery, is simply the best.
So we don't drink alcohol which is why I think the service at times felt slow, when in reality they were probably trying to give us time to talk and enjoy each other, but other than that our service was fantastic. We got the 8 oz filet and a 14 oz rib-eye and both were amazing. The filet was soft and full of flavor while the rib-eye had a solid but tender chew with an amazing smoke flavor to it. My wife got the Caesar Salad (sans anchovies) and loved it and we also got the Shoestring Fries on the side, which on their own were amazing. Best fries we have eaten in a long time. My only other negative would be that their menu both in store and online isn't updated. I tried to have an advertised chocolate lava-cake reserved for my wife (her favorite) but the server let us know that they had been without the item for some time. Instead we got a flour-less chocolate tart that was good except for the coffee flavor (which is a personal preference, we don't drink coffee). I highly recommend Malone's to everyone and will eventually make it back there again sometime.
The kindness of you staff and manager was wonderful! Food disappointing for the price The roast lamb and Virginia ham was excellent. The scarcity of gravy for the lamb and the tiny paper thin portions of ham made both my parents hungry within the hour. We appreciated your attempts to accommodate the wheel chair and the hearing loss, but even Paul and I felt cramped and crowded. The overall presentations of scrambled eggs with the hash browns with lamb intrigued me. And I was left disappointed. My husbands choice was not even memorable. All I remember is his comment that after dropping 300 dollars with only one cocktail we would not be returning . if bonefish can pull of perfect enters at half the price, we should have gone there as my mother suggested before I thought to surprise her with this special place for Easter
My wife went to Malones for Brunch this past Easter Sunday. We had never went there before and was eagerly looking forward to it. Upon arrival, we were seated rather quickly as we had made previous reservations. The ambiance was rather loud, but we could hear each other's conversation. We didn't know previously there was a set menu, no problem with that, but also found out later there was a breakfast area in the back of the restaurant. Once we ordered and the meal arrived, it was mediocre at best. The fried potatoes were hard and lamb was uneventful and devoid of really any taste. Quite frankly, I expected better. My wife opted to try the breakfast brunch in the rear of the restaurant, and to her surprise, the meal was much better. The cost of the meal was a bit disappointing as it was a bit expensive for what you received. Not sure if I would frequent the restaurant again as my first experience was not that pleasant.
Excellent, delicious food for Easter Brunch. Waitress left restaurant mid-meal. Our salad was forgotten until we reminded them, but imagine this is unusual.
We ate in the restaurant downstairs and enjoyed it very much. Definitely will go back. Want to try their casual atmosphere upstairs - it also looks like it has a nice menu. Service was great!
Great time, great food, great service, will go again!
Food was a little over-priced, we felt. The overall experience was excellent, however. Met the owner who was most gracious and engaged with his customers. Staff was like a well-oiled machine, working very well together. Certainly an upscale experience in Manassas.
If you're hankerin' for steak, there are several choices on the menu. I your tastes run to fish, fowl, to the other white meat, your choices are more limited. For starters, you have a choice of two soups, three salads, and about four other appetizers. The Onion Soup Gratin could have been hotter and the cheese was just melted on the piece of bread, not baked on top.
If your meal does not come with the shoestring fries, order them as a side for the table. They are addictive. However, they are also spicy. As long as you don't mind a little after taste, they are great.
The staff is very professional and attentive. Water glasses are continuously refilled.
Kevin, the owner stops by the tables to see how things are going.
Their wine list, while somewhat limited is fairly priced.
I was completely underwhelmed with this experience. We were celebrating my wife's birthday and from the initial interaction I thought we would have a nice evening. That went down quickly. From the running out of Seafood of the day at 6:30 PM, to the forgetting one of our appetizers, to the menu script that was misleading (need to educate the staff on what FRESH pasta is, and the difference between brunoise and shaved winter vegetables). Also get a calendar its April, not October. Shouldn't we be looking at Spring items? The salmon was over seasoned (since my wife couldn't get the scallops). My son's steak was not medium it was well. Again, I was hoping for a great meal and I got a forgettable one. The Hostess asked how our night was and my wife say poor. All she could say was...Oh Sorry to hear that. When I mentioned that we didn't get one of our appetizers, the server said OK i'll remove it. Not sorry about that, can I correct it. This restaurant is charging DC / Tyson's steakhouse prices and with such a limited menu should be on point. Again, they are not. I will not return again, and I will not recommend this to friends. There is an opportunity for this to be a great restaurant, and clearly has a lot of work to do.
