Mallards on the St. Croix Ratings and Reviews
The fish and chips were good, fried golden and not brown and burnt like some places. It was all you can crab legs that night so it was very busy so we'll choose a different night next time unless we want crab legs cuz they were serving them on heaping platters!
We went for brunch and the kitchen got backed up from many parties ordering at once, but the wait staff was super sweet. They were checking in and letting us know what was taking time. Our toddler’s soup came out first and early so the wait wasn’t terrible. The food was quite good and the desserts they offered for the wait were great.
Took the boyfriend to Mallards on his birthday. Made reservations but that ended up being unnecessary as it was a Tuesday at 2pm so literally there was one other party of 2 and us. The place was empty. Haha. Our server was super courteous and helpful with the menu. I had the Steak Alfredo which was absolutely delicious. Boyfriend had the fish and chips and said it was really good too. The place has a very nice lake view. When we told the server it was my boyfriend's birthday, he offered to give us free dessert which was way nice of him. We got their New Orleans Beignets to go and sweet Jesus, they were simply AH-mazing. Very positive experience.
For the last few months whenever I've gone here it has been disappointing. We've received extremely slow service from the kitchen, it appears they are short staffed for servers, and it's eventually followed up by just so-so food. I believe, ultimately, this is the result of poor management/ownership.
The last time we were there, after 1.5 hours we had received one beverage, no water refills, and only the salad/soup first course. Don't go to Mallards unless you have all the time in the world and are ok with mediocre food.
Arrived on time for reservation but they said they would be able to seat us in the dining room for at least 20-30 minutes. We opted to sit on their covered deck (with plastic sheeting covering the screened windows) and it was freezing. Loud music was playing there too. Really not the type of atmosphere I was hoping for. I wonder what was the point of having a reservation if we needed to wait 30 minutes for a table in the dining room? Server was attentive, good was decent. We certainly won't be back.
We went on a Monday evening for our anniversary. I had crab legs (pretty good), he had chicken bruschetta (excellent!) I added a Mallard's House salad (excellent!) . We had key lime pie (excellent!) for dessert, which was given to us 'on the house' for our special occasion. The restaurant is tucked away in the Bayport Marina, and it was dark, but I think you can see the marina from the window tables. All in all a very pleasant experience.
The service was slow, it took 20 minutes to get a drink. We asked for bread and received two tiny slices. The food arrived and the fried catfish dinner was hot and fresh, but the seafood cannelloni was served lukewarm at best. The flavor was nice, but it was almost cold. Nasty. The server professed helplessness. It was a birthday celebration and we were very disappointed. The only good thing is the view from the porch.
Service was very slow. We were not seated on time. Asked for a dessert menu and after receiving it didn't see our waitress for 15 -20 minutes. Left without ordering dessert. Noted that we had birthday when we made our reservation and it was not even acknowledged.
Will not go back.
We were there on a Wednesday night. It was not very crowded. There were 6 of us and 3 of the 6 ordered the lobster roll. They have all traveled extensively and had lobster rolls all around the country and the world. They said that Mallards had the best that they had ever eaten. One woman said that she lives about 2 hours from there, but she will have her husband drive there and definitely order the lobster rolls again.
Third time was not a charm. This was the last and worst chance. The kitchen vents into the dining room so everything smells like grease. Poor, poor service. The filet was listed as 6 oz was less than 3. The outdoors of this place is lovely. The inside should match but just doesn't. Like I said, this was our 3rd try. We wanted so much for this place to improve. We are done. A beautiful Friday night and the place was nearly empty. This says everything.
Our waiter was poor, mixed up orders, drinks took forever.
Our bills came messed up, when he went to correct them he ran our cards without letting us review the "corrected" bill and ran the cards opposite (so I paid a $90 bill when our friends paid my $74 bill). After we left we realized that the bill was STILL wrong. Very frustrated but called the manager who thanked me for letting him know.
I love this place and the food is good but if you're in a hurry, go elsewhere!
Mallards advertised King Crab, ALL YOU CAN EAT for $19.99 per person. When we asked for an additional 1/2 serving we were told it would be an Additional $13.99 (market price the server said) and when questioned about the ALL YOU CAN EAT feature we were told that was an "Ad" gimmick. Server was good, what crab legs we did get were good, but we feel this is false
advertising and therefore will not patronize this establishment again and will additionally advise friends to avoid it also!
We've been to Mallard's couple of other times and the food has always been great as was the service. This week the service was very slow, food was good but not great. we will go back, but probably not for a while. We had a Groupon for wine/cheese tasting. The wine was brought to us in wine glasses, with 2 empty glasses for us to pour the wine into. I saw others with Wine Flights and they had nice wine tasting carafes - what's up with the glasses? And I would've expected a sheet of paper telling us what the wines were.
Great opportunity for this place, they just need to step it up a notch and be more consistent.
Lobster Roll was yummy as always.
This is our second time at Mallards. Both times for our anniversary! It is a beautiful location, especially if you like the water views. Worth the drive as it is 40 minutes from our home. If we lived closer, we would frequent more often!
Jackie was our sever is is a joy. She was very attentive to my parents and our needs!
Great location and beautiful view of the Saint Croix! Our waiter was very friendly, and the atmosphere was nice. The menu had many different options, which was great for a larger group. The price was much more reasonable than other restaurants I looked at in the Stillwater area. A few of my friends ordered salads and really enjoyed them. All of the ingredients looked fresh, and the presentation was most inviting, especially the way the walleye tacos came out. I ordered the Mediterranean shrimp pasta, which I wished I would have enjoyed more. It was a nice dish but way too spicy for both my taste and for the Mediterranean cuisine. The waiter also mentioned that the soup of the day was really spicy, so it could just be the restaurant, but I would recommend that you ask about the level of spice in the dish you order. I love mediterranean dishes, but their preparation of this pasta dish made for a less enjoyable dining experience for me.
It was our first time here. We were entertaining guests from England and they wanted to dine somewhere by the water. The local lake restaurants were full so we chose Mallards. Always a risk to take friends to a new restaurant but our experience was good, the food was good (especially the lobster roll), and the view of the St. Croix river was enjoyable. They enjoyed it and so did we. I recommend this place to try.
Didn't matter that we had a reservation as people ahead of us, wearing swim suits and without reservations, were given tables near the windows. We waited. The staff seating; a male looking to be a manager and a couple females hostesses, seemed very caught up in the flurry and apparent excitement of boaters coming in, and somewhat Inconvinced by our group ("well, where do you want to sit?"). It was all to bad because the food was so good and the venue is so pretty.
The food was okay but the entire evening was spoiled by possibly the worst waiter ever. We were there on a recent Saturday and it was early evening - not busy. We placed our appetizer and entree orders soon after being seated. We hadn't been waiting long for the apps when the waiter stopped by our table and said the chicken wings would be out soon - except we hadn't ordered wings. The correct apps arrived within a reasonable timeframe. The entrees, however, were a different story. He gave us two different excuses as to why our dinner was taking so long and also told us we had to be patient - hah! (first : A large party had placed their order just before us, and later: The kitchen never saw our order - he flashed a piece of paper as if to prove it to us). He said the apps would be comped. We waited more and he suddenly brought out a second order of the two appetizers we had originally eaten. When he placed the second of the two apps down he made a comment about how quickly those arrived. Puzzled, we told him we'd already eaten our first order of appetizers and hadn't ordered a second round of them. He said he didn't remember us getting our first round (not surprising since it had been well over an hour) and that we would need to pay for one of the sets of apps. Yeah, right. Let's just say it came out of his tip. He also offered a free drink - my husband asked for a mojito. It must have been a Shirley Temple mojito. No alcohol and all sugar. Our entrees finally arrived and they were fine. We did notice several tables around us that also seemed to be waiting an unusually long time. One couple that came in after us appeared to be frustrated and left after eating just their appetizer. Thankfully we weren't super hungry when we arrived and were not in a particular hurry. Terrible waiter aside, the restaurant was clean - but definitely not worth our drive from the Cities. We will NOT be returning to Mallards on the St Croix nor would we recommend it.
The food was average. They ran out of baked potatoes, so they just opted to bring me French fries without asking if that was ok. Our house salads were warm and the lettuce was wilted and the radicchio was brown. The restaurant was extremely noisy and I thought the servers appeared disheveled and very unprofessional looking. I do not appreciate servers with nose and lip rings and an over abundance of their tattoos showing in this type of restaurant. I am not a prude, but in a fine dining restaurant I expect more professionalism from the servers. I tip at least 20% when dining out, which I did at Mallards, but truly our dining experience did not live up to a 20% tip.
