At Makani everyone is welcome.
The food and ambiance were both great, we sat outside and it was lovely. They were out of a few key items but otherwise it was delicious and enjoyable. Farm to table food was fresh and the dishes were interesting and unique. Would go back.
Bar seating for happy hour. Sweet, intimate, delicious food, very attentive bartender. Perfect date in Venice Beach!
Really fantastic food. Classic dishes done with interesting twists. Loved the miso Brussel sprouts. If we lived in Venice we’d dine there all the time!
Great food, nice space outside with heaters. Totally recommend
The place is average. Food disappointing. Service was good. Not recommendable
Unique and tasty
Amazing food. Really cool restaurant. The dishes were fresh and inviting and had lots of flavor. The potatoes were a huge standout.
Sunset, perfect cocktails, creative food, the sweetest staff -yeah, it’s like movie perfect at Makani ❤️
Wonderful staff and food!
I’d been wanting to come here for a few months but was unfortunately pretty disappointed with our meal. We tried 5+ things and nothing came out well. The ribs were lukewarm almost cold, and for only getting 3 pieces to have one piece be completely fat (and cold) made it inedible and extremely disappointing. The broccolini was completely burnt/charred which made it very dry (and not seasoned). Some of the tomatoes in the burrata small plate were way past their prime and mushy/mealy. The rest was just subpar. Could have been an off night for the kitchen as it seems like mostly execution related issues but for the price, not willing to risk a second disappointing experience.
The food was excellent, especially the clams in red curry and the Salmon! Service was very prompt and friendly, although wine came too late for the meal. Great wine list; however, we saw the same wine, same vintage at another restaurant the following evening for $35 less 🙄. Still, great atmosphere, wonderful chef working and assessable to patrons and happy service people. Would definitely return.
Service was excellent: attentive and personal, but food was not what we expected or as exciting as the reviews everywhere point. The appetizers were rather small and not too tasty. Salads were just ok, entree chicken was tender and very good, but the mahi mahi was too plan. Tables outside are fun and the mezcal cocktail was spicy and fun. Maybe it’s great for drinks and happy hour.
Overall just ok for dinner.
Took us 30 minutes to be seated even though we had a reservation. Once we got to the table we were informed they were sold out of several things on the menu.
Had to ask for music to be turned down so we could have a conversation without shouting! They kindly accommodated.
Friendly & good service.
The food was either extremely bland or extremely salty. And overpriced relative to amount and quality of food.
Makani reopened in early June, 2019 to a new chef, so if you are reading a review prior to that date, it is irrelevant. We had the tasting menus, one was vegan, and one quite meaty. The menus change daily. They also have an a la carte option. The menu is adventurous with most of the dishes working quite well. This is a non-formulaic restaurant, sitting in the heart of Venice. It does not succeed 100% of the time, but what does? And where it does succeed, it does so with flying colors.
The very friendly staff seated us in a lovely outdoor patio overlooking Rose Ave. The music started a bit loud and aggressive, but quickly gave way to some loungier vibes a la A Tribe Called Quest that really complemented the chic, yet relaxed vibes of the patio. The decor fit an aesthetic that was a bit too calming to be called gothic or dark, but skirted this line enough to be cool. The food had several particularly bright spots, but fell flat at the times I felt it mattered most. Furthermore, these aspects - music, decor, and food- all felt unrelated in a way that wasn't problematic, but could benefit from being more aligned. It felt as though there were some big ideas that could be great, but require a decent amount more of detailed and pragmatic working out. I hope people will be patient with Makani while it progresses, because there's a world in which these ideas are executed well and we're all better for it.
Makani has recently brought in a young chef, Miles Thomas who is creating wonderful, imaginative and delicious food! We stopped in for lunch and were so glad we did. Every dish was full of flavor surprises but all the dishes also worked really well together. Can't wait to go back and have dinner! The menu looks sparse and you don't necessarily know what you will get based on the descriptions, but you'll be glad you ordered it! A very welcome addition to the Rose and Abbot Kinney restaurant scene.
There was a hair in 4 of my dishes!!! Each dish had a hair in it. They comped the dishes that had the hairs in it but other than that there was no compensation for this atrocious experience- oh, it was also my birthday. I’ll never go back and I don’t think anyone should/ the food that didn’t have hairs in it were mediocre
Service was slow and didn’t ask us if we wanted to order drinks before last call.
Great space in spite of how loud it was. I’m bummed when great spaces lack the acoustic considerations. It was raining, otherwise I’d have preferred the patio under the heaters so I could talk without shouting. Very annoying.
Food was DELICIOUS nonetheless! We had the grilled cabbage with a side of whole grain mustard and cavatelli pasta. Both will be a certain repeat! Brussels sprout salad- would pass on next time- it was good but other menu items look compelling. And the pork belly- so good! The table next to us kindly shared their bread and butter which they were raving about. They were not wrong.
I’ll be back!
Everything about Makani is amazing! Food, service, cocktails, ambiance, and vibe. Top notch, and one of our favorite restaurants in Venice!
In our top 10 in Venice & Santa Monica. Try it. You’ll more than like it.
A lot of entitled an noisy people. Obnoxious. Not user if it's like that all the time.but noticed that could be the sort of crowd.. Become very aggressive after asking them to turn off their cellphone music..
Starters were very good. Entree’s were very poor. Chicken tough and chewy and burnt. Quality of steak very below par vs the cost of the dish.
Cool scene but small menu. Only side dishes and large entrees.
The food was magnificent. The wonderful chef Brian was a genius with his flavors and presentation. The roasted mushroom, fried rice and tofu foam was one of the best things I've ever eaten. The desserts were amazing. Chef Brian sent out a chocolate chip macaroon which was amazing. I'd highly recommend the restaurant and can't wait to go back.
We loved Makani for the amazing flavors and interesting mix of delicious courses in the Dine LA program. The atmosphere was hip and fun and Daniel the Host was so welcoming and informative. Every dish was flavorful and unique. We will be back!!!
Creative and well excuted DineLA menu. Nice outdoor seating and stunning bar area
Incredibly disappointing and mediocre.
Thought it'd be a cool spot for good cocktails, a fun vibe, and a full restaurant with Asian-fusiony tastes.
The food was just not good.
Cauliflower - too much going on! Where'd the vegetable go?
Brussels - very good, but by no means "the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had" as the waiter professed
Rice balls - best thing we ate. But nothing to write home about.
Beef - not tender, flavor was fine. Kale that came with it was sour.
Duck - "what they're known for" - bad! Not tender, and the flavor of the whole dish was off
We are a family that enjoys cooking. Both of my daughters and their boyfriends appreciate good food. The menu was exquisite and the flavors were so well balanced. Make sure to have the duck, clams ad the branciino. The drums were also delicious. This is a lovely place and sit outside they have blankets and heaters.
Describing the menu as “spice forward”, this place has an identity crisis. The first eggplant dish was so spicy, it was difficult to taste anything that came after. There are Indian and Korean spices and sometimes those just don’t complement each other. The menu is lacking in direction for the diner, and the server was polite but unable to guide us. I was disappointed that an Asian fusion place had such meh desserts. There wasn’t anything tying the dishes together and the sizes of the plates made no sense. It was so oversold by the article in Forbes.
Food is pretty good. The buttermilk ribs are exceptional as is the paella. Would have rated it higher, but we got sat on the patio on a cold night; heaters didn’t really work.
Our server Kathryn was great. She deserves a raise! I like spicy food, but all the food was just too spicy, covering up the flavor of the food.
To whom it may concern,
I came in to dine with Makani this past Friday, I went in with such high expectations and had an bad experience.
I run a food blog highlighting all restaurants on the Westside and was excited to feature Makani but it didn't turn out as a I hoped.
We sat at a table for 2 and was seated around 2 large parties of 8 so the noise level was insanely loud.
We ordered broccolini and the burrata, which took 1 hour to get to us. While waiting we decided to order the rest of our food since it was taking so long, we then ordered the brussel sprouts, ribs, and steak.
We ordered 2 drinks which took 30 minutes and then when we finished asked our waiter for another which took another 30 min.
1 hour and a half later and still no food so we decided to cancel our order of everything we ordered and leave.
Our waiter rarely checked on us and we always had to stop him.
This entire experience was very unfortunate and disappointing.
Awesome from start to finish. The GM took care of us like we were old friends. The food is diverse yet it is tied together with a heat that complements each dish. Oh, and the cocktails were fabulous. I had an all around great time.
While food was good, it was pricey . Endive and apple salad was delicious, but small. Persimmon and Burrata salad wasn't a very interesting blend of flavors. . Whole branzino at $37 was very small, though tasty. Duck was large but not crispy. Great drinks and wine. Knowledgeable server.
Meal was good , but I 'm not sure I would return since there are so many other options.
Great place, awesome good and service ...
Local hot spot in a trendy neighborhood that is constantly going upscale, in Venice, CA, on Rose, making it the main local drag. Great food, a bit too noisy for me, but the service and food more than compensated for that. The food menu is very creative, a bit creatively spicy. using asian and indian spices, but they tell you what is spicy and isn't in advance. For us, presentation was in grouping of 2 - 3 dishes, for two people, then whatever additional food was ordered. That kept everything hot to warm while we ate. Service was great from everyone. I wish I could remember our waitresses name. She was the nicest person, a great servers and had this warm, welcoming glow and attitude about her. She stood out from a staff that were all warm, smiling, observant and there when you want them there and otherwise keeping an eye on you. It creates a great service ambiance for the house. Eggplant & Nurungji, with the accuramonts are a for sure a tasting hit - a bit spicy, try an IPA beer with dinner instead of wine. OK, brussels sprouts to die for - everyone does them a bit differently. See what you taste in these for wonderful favor. A bit on the oily side, but that is part of the taste. What can one say about Mung Bean Jeon, after learning how to pronounce it. The whole disk has favors that are the sum of its parts. Try it. And, lamb and beef skewers with pistachio, cardamom, chili, pickled grape and curry lebui.
And that is why it is sometimes hard to get a table. The wait is well worth it.
