Can't say enough good things about this place. The owner is a serious academic who decided to become a restaurateur and, in my opinion, succeeded beyond wildest expectations. The food is unbelievably good. I'd say it can stand up to any Michelin starred restaurant in the city. The dishes were unusual, inventive, and invariably delicious. I'm not big on eating vegetables, especially green, leafy ones. One of the dishes consisted mainly of cabbage, and I loved every bite!
The atmosphere is more like that of a family meal. The service was impeccable. And the speakeasy concept added a little spice to the whole experience.
Great place! Try it out and you won't be disappointed!
Great experience. Highly recommend.
Such a great experience. We loved it. From start to finish an evening of a lifetime. The food is paired masterfully with amazing wines. I was blown away with all of the courses. The venison was the best, but choosing between any of them is tough since all were perfect.
Very friendly and considers service. Love the wine and food!
Where to begin! I had a very great experience being hosted by Carlos on 4/3. The service was impeccable as was the location. Complimentary drinks included an apertif, choice of white wine (we chose the Riesling over the Pinot Blanc), cocktail created by Carlos (amazing- and I don't prefer vodka cocktails), as well as a red wine to pair with the last dish.
Now on to the food. Making an outstanding 8 course meal in a home kitchen does have it's difficulties. I'm not a food critic, so I applaud the chef for being able to execute this (we also later found out from the chef himself that it was his first private dining venue). There were definitely points to improve, though that may be due to personal preference (i.e, a stronger lemongrass flavor for the snow crab with ikura and snap pea puree). My sister did not particularly like the grapefruit and tuna. The last savory course was definitely played safe with a steak and black pepper jus (perfectly cooked though!)
Overall I would edge it a 3.5-3.75 out of 5 stars. Not quite at 4 yet. Unfortunately, a big part of the success of Maison Sun hinges on the chef. I love how it promotes the creativity of chefs and how Carlos actively inquires about our meal and experience for the night. It displays his ambitious nature to make Maison Sun one of the best places out there- and his reception to feedback shows commitment to improving. Although my sister probably won't be back, I know I definitely will sometime down the line. Looking forward to next time!
This was one of two of the only restaurants I've been to for indoor dining during Covid.
Service was very professional and great teamwork, food was spectacular - every dish was perfectly well balanced and decorated and did not feel overly heavy.
We will definitely come back .
Loved the whole speakeasy experience. Great for special occasions and especially if you are looking to do something safe and different during COVID.
Highly recommend, thumbs up!
Besides a totally unique and excellent experience, the music was great. They clearly have an eclectic taste, and it goes well with their concept. Each night a different chef and different menu. Amazing! Keep doing what you are doing!
Great service and wines, loved the location.
It is the smartest idea brining these fine dining experience in NYC at temporary locations.
It was on a loft of about the size of a studio apartment in SOHO.
Total of 4 small groups of 2-3 people were dining.
With all the paired wine, cocktails, drinks, and gratitudes included, it is a great value for a fine French dining.
The creator Carlos was very attentive and pleasant.
Of course, the food and drinks were wonderful!!
Amazing guest chef! Wine and service outstanding! Highly recommend.
My husband and I came to celebrate our anniversary, had a memorable evening. The meal was 8 courses, wine and cocktails included. The price point is definitely high, but in our opinion well-worth it. The duck course was amazing! We really enjoyed dessert as well. Great location in Soho.
Expensive, but definitely worth it. Great if you’re looking for a unique, one-of-kind fine-dining experience.
Loved the experience! Great ambiance. Took a date for a special occasion, wonderful intimate vibe. Would definitely return!
I came here on a Tuesday for a special guest chef tasting menu, I really enjoyed the experience. The food was outstanding. I was really impressed with the service as well - very knowledgeable staff.
Improved a lot in terms of food. Wines were good too. Service was on point. Would recommend to give it a try.
Dear Paula! We deeply regret you had a less than positive experience. As I conveyed in our private correspondence, the sous-chef who came in to assist us that day, Charles Stroinski, falsified his credentials. It turns out, he is a line-cook with little experience and poor references at the restaurant “Manhatta” on 28 Liberty St. Several guests felt deeply disappointed with the execution of our menu that evening. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you back and giving us a second chance.
Excellent food. Menu is extensive and seasonal to a particularly high standard. Definitely fine dining. It can be expensive but worth it. They hire different chefs on different nights, worth asking before you book. We let them know ahead of time we are not fans of seafood and were able to accommodate. Highly recommended.
This was an incredible dining experience made more so by the amazing hospitality and the cook on each of the dishes presented to us. A casual fine-dining experience I will be sure to patron again! Thanks for all your care, Carlos!
Brilliantly executed - a rare and unique nyc experience that anyone with a flair for the unusually exceptional will enjoy. If you need things to go by the books and love the rigidity of a high end restaurant operating in traditional service form, this is not for you.
We could not be more grateful for your kind of words! Indeed, the jazz piano music of Bill Evans is a joy! I take pride we offered the sentiment of his music to our guests as part of the experience, songs such as "peace piece," which capture so much of the beauty and magic that is New York City. We certainly hope it was a Valentine's Day evening to remember!
Ambiance was excellent. Food was uninspiring. Definetley overpriced.
Dear Ms. Brody, Thank you for praising our ambiance last Saturday evening! Not many appreciate Bill Evans' jazz! After following-up with you, I am glad we were able to sort out the misunderstanding whereby you overpaid us by $300 in cash in error. Yesterday, I reimbursed you from my personal Venmo account for said amount. Chef Turnbull made every effort that evening to customize the menu to your several dietary restrictions. He and I do sincerely regret we did not meet your expectations.
Delicious food. Amazing service. Intimate setting. Just perfect!
Warm friendly and energetic staff. The tasting menu created by the chef was amazing all produce was sourced locally as per chef he believes in buying everything locally and supporting the local vendors.
This is an unusual awesome place. It was not crowded and had a special atmosphere.
Very disappointing. Not worth at all. Don’t go.
Mr. Yinping Ho, We appreciate you and your friends visited us four times. We regret that on your final visit, NYE 2020, despite we served you champagne, white seasonal truffles, as well as numerous whiskey sours made with 18 year-old bourbon on-the-house, you felt our generosity was lacking. We certainly hope you find an other high-end venue that better serves your expectations of an 8-course tasting menu, wine, tax and gratuities included at your desired price-point of $150 for NYE 2021.
This is such a unique concept, loved our whole experience! We were well spaced out and very comfortable dining here. The chef took so much care and pride in each course and we loved trying everything along with the drink pairings! Most memorable dish for me was the cold smoked scallop dish. Would absolutely recommend for small groups, special occasions, or romantic evening!
Maya, Thank you for sharing your experience. We take pride in welcoming guests into our home-away-from-home. Feel free to come back for the Smoke scallops while we have them on the menu. Do not hesitate to contact us in the immediate future. Be well and safe!
My date and I were looking for a new experience and this definitely was it! We were greeted at the door and immediately felt the speak easy vibe. The brownstone was 2 levels with a cool koi pond in the backyard, which had a chill vibe. We started with a complimentary cocktail and seated at the “chef’s corner”, right in front of the chef and where he prepared the food. It was so much fun to get this amazing type of attention from the chef. Each dish we tasted had distinct flavor and presented w a great story behind it. Each course was paired with great wine as well. The intimate setting is perfect for a safe dining experience with social distancing at mind.
I look forward to bringing a group in and having the space to ourselves as they can host up to 10 guests exclusively in the main dining area. Awesome spot for an exclusive birthday dinner. Thanks for a great tone Chef Sun!
Greetings, Thank you for your descriptive feedback. We truly appreciate you for choosing to dine with us during such an unpredictable and deeply cautious time in the world. We take pride in our home and the ability to provide our guests with a safe and intimate dining experience. If we can assist you in the near future, do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you and be well!
Sort of a nontraditional restaurant, but in a good way. We couldn't find the entrance, so we called. The chef came down and got us, he was really friendly and welcoming. The space is really beautifully designed - theres a lot of space unlike most cramped NYC restaurants so I felt safer eating inside than at most other places. 70's music was chill, food was great, the chef prepared and explained all the food right in front of us. They also have a koi fish pond in the back which was cool. Great if you're looking for a speakeasy experience or a safe indoor experience during COVID.
Julia, We are grateful that you chose to dine with us. We love the mystery that comes with visiting our location. Your feedback depics the nature of what we invisioned for all our guests to experience: a speakeasy vibe, safe social distancing, attentiveness, eloquent design and personalized service. We look forward to having you and your guests join us in the near future. Thank you!
