Maison Bleue Berkeley
It was smaller than I thought it was. The food was greasy.
This is a great location for downtown Berkeley. Perfect place to catch a bite to eat before the afternoon show at the Berkeley Rep. Busy place, probably because the food is good and the staff is friendly. We hit an especially busy time, so it was pretty noisy. The outside area would be great in nice weather.
Excellent crepes... with buckwheat for savory ones
cozy restaurant serving yummy crepes, I would love to go back in the spring and sit on the large patio!
Food was good but serving delays were unaaceptable.
The food was extraordinary - the staff was super friendly - but two of our entrees simply got lost in the shuffle. There was very little "how is everything?" follow up with the waitstaff. It only really materialized after we walked to the counter and asked why everyone else in our party had finished their meals - where were the other two. The food was excellent - but there seemed to be a lot of friendly chatter going on in the kitchen rather than making sure entrees came out on time and were hot when they were delivered. (particularly since once of the entrees was a warmed slice of premade bread pudding)
Our waiter was very friendly and a great compliment to our food - once they'd actually made contact with us. Great food - but ya'll need to work on your execution a little bit for you to get top stars.
Very creative menu. We had breakfast crepe with buckwheat pancakes. Service was slow. Didn't seem to have enough help. Had reservations, but had to wait in line while those without reaervations placed order. Had to find own table. Service should improve with additional help. Food is great now.
Food was ok. Cappuccino small and disappointing but what I really objected to was having a reservation and then having to wait in a long line to order food. There is no host or hostess. What’s the point of making a reservation and then waiting in line with everyone who just shows up. They need to either honor reservations or take themselves off Open Table.
There are savory and sweet crepe options. Enjoyed the vegetarian filling with a buckwheat crepe. There was indoor and outdoor seating available. There was an extensive list of beverages. Our choice was a delicious rose. Parking garage is adjacent with a tunnel to the restaurant. Metered street parking is also available. Our server was friendly and helpful.
Beautiful outdoor seating, in lovely Berkeley and maybe this was an off day for the cook staff but the "pan Perdue" was completely inedible, it was like trying to eat a brick. The Croque madame was verging on burnt. The egg on top was lovely, but the rest of the sandwich was dry and inedible. The wait staff was very sweet, very efficient. Too bad the cooks couldn't match their proficiency. I will try them again, and maybe just stick to the baked goods.
I like this cute little place a lot. However, this experience was disappointing. We arrived with a reservation. Waited quite some time just to get drink orders taken. No ice, so had to change order. Again, another 5 mintues or so of waiting. 45 minutes in, we were still waiting for our entree. Meanwhile, the couple next to us, who had arrived almost 10 minutes later, were almost done eating.
I had the Complète which was very tasty, the Salade du Sud +bacon and a large cider. As others have mentioned it was order at the counter and be seated. The total came to $30. It was a good, authentic dinner. I plan to return.
Great service and fab savory crepes. Worth a visit
Great service and authentic French crepes!
Lovely outdoor seating! Staff was so nice. Had savory crepes and bubbles- was perfect date night.
This is a very informal place with a few tables inside and several outside. It’s counter service with the staff bringing your meal. For such a small place, our order took longer than expected. My wife had a buckwheat crepe which she said was good, although the chicken filling was not very flavorful. I had the Croque Monsieur - which was good. Nothing fancy. I would probably go back if I’m in the area and have a desert crepe. Would not go there for dinner again - lunch maybe or desert - yes.
We discovered this place because our theater tickets entitled us to a free lemon-sugar crepe, but the buckwheat gallettes we had were really delicious. Good French beer, too. Service was really friendly, and the atmosphere was casual. Will definitely coem back for a quick pre-theater dinner again. It's not really obvious from the street, so they might not get enough walk-by business, but look for it and you won't regret it.
1/3 or menu items were available. Service very slow
Authentic French fare— simple crepes, cheese and charcuterie— at an unhurried pace. Service was excellent; we were allowed to sit and luxuriate. The wine list is also quite thoughtful, and I recommend this place for a languid evening (there’s only one person in the kitchen, so don’t go if you’re in a rush).
Fantastic food and the service was exceptional as well.
We enjoyed our cappachinos and our galettes and our frambree banana crepe. So delicious. The place was rather small. I had made a reservation but were not seated when we checked in. There was no reservation sign on any of the tables. We asked after waiting 10 minutes if we could choose any table. He said go ahead. Oh well, I guess he was too busy with the take out orders. He could have just gestured for us to choose any table. This was the only drawback. There were people studying and also some on their computers. So it was more like a Starbucks in that respect than a Bistro.
Very nice, will absolutely go back!
Coffee was delicious!
Fabulous food, great service and attention to detail!
My partner went for the first time to this restaurant for this valentine's day. Musician who played was FANTASTIC, food was delicious, service was super attentive and kind. Def coming back!
What an amazingly great mix of lovely food and friendly staff. The coffee and food were excellent, and perfect for an informal brunch
This is an update to an earlier review that was in response to a scheduling error between OpenTable and Maison Bleue Berkeley. After my first review with the comment that I wished I could have tried the food, but the restaurant was closed (even though OpenTable allowed me to book a New Year's Day brunch for my wife and I). Promptly after my review was posted, I was contacted by the manager of Maison Bleue Berkeley. Patrice deeply apologized for the mix up and offered to send me a gift card for the inconvenience caused. After the gift card arrived in the mail, my wife and I took them up on their offer for a weekend brunch. The food was amazing (we had the croque madame and carnivore omelet) , the coffee was rich and delicious and the best part of the whole experience was the staff. They very friendly and welcoming as we made our orders and even gave us a refill on the coffee (I don't think the menu says that they are bottomless).
In short, great food, great location, amazing staff & management. We'll be back again soon!
Perfect Saturday brunch. So glad we found this neighborhood bistro gem. Great coffee. Great food.
The food was excellent; especially the vegetable soup. The service was also very good; we had a nice long lunch and never felt hurried.
We had a very nice dinner at Maison Bleue after a hike in Tilden Park. The service was exceptional. Very friendly and informative. You could tell that the waiter really enjoyed his work and the food that he was serving. The crepes were very tasty and presented in an artistic manner. We had a variety of savory crepes and all were excellent. We topped it off with a delicious salted caramel sweet crepe for dessert. We will definitely return and recommend this gem to our friends.
Wish they had table service...food is excellent
This is a great spot for a quick meal before Berkeley Rep performances. The crepes -- both the buckwheat galettes and the sweet dessert crepes -- were delicious. There is also a small but very appealing list of wines, beer, and ciders. We especially loved the dessert crepe with housemade caramel. The atmosphere is cozy and our server was friendly, efficient and charming.
I wish they would have updated their hours for opentable. They took our reservation via opentable and confirmed it, but when we got to the restaurant, there was a sign saying there were closed for the next few days.
Cozy and delightful! We had crepes, oeufs, and croque monsieur—delicious all— and reveled in the French atmosphere. Just sad we didn't have room for the bananes flambées.
This is a wonderful & unpretentious bistro. We come from France & know French food very well. The menu is very authentic! The galettes are excellent, so is the flan. It is a simple place, but very enjoyable. Very friendly service. Will come back!!
Amazing breakfast, great service!
Been to Maison Bleue before Breakfast once, lunch once & dinner twice. Their menu is small but the quality is consistently very good & the service is so nice. Daniel makes you feel so welcome & special! Looking forward to future visits.
Friendly service, tasty crepes, tasty mousse for dessert. I would like more appetizer options aside from meat and cheese plates. Worth another visit as they develop.
This is my first time for dinner and it felt very welcoming. The service was outstanding and warm, the food was delicious and the portions were generous. It's a great spot for a pre or post movie or other downtown Berkeley activity. Looking forward to future visits.
Had Les Oeuf de la Mer, Citron Crepes, Pan au Chocolat, croissant, and cafe au lait. The eggs were so incredible I cannot wait to come back again and the crepes were just amazing as well. Croissants were perfectly flaky, not chewy at all. Just wonderful all around. Prices were spectacular making this an affordable treat.
