We have dined here several times for special occasions & absolutely love it. The menu is a fusion of Japanese/French/international & everything comes together beautifully. However, on this occasion the wonderful rack of lamb was accompanied by a melange of vegetables that contained an extremely hot Japanese pepper. The roof of my mouth felt like it was burning off, there was a searing, tingling inside my lips, tears streamed from my eyes & my voice became a croak. I had to stop eating for 10 minutes while I waited for these symptoms to disappear. I mentioned all this a little later to the maitre d' (the chef's wife, I believe). She said that one in ten of this particular pepper is extremely hot, so I was the unlucky one, especially as I have a gastro-intestinal health problem which prohibits me from eating anything spicy or hot. I do wish that there were a warning about this pepper on the menu.
Nevertheless, we will return to Maison Akira, but next time we will carefully & thoroughly enquire about any dish we might consider ordering, though this should not be necessary.
Tried Akira Saturday night. Had the chef's menu and I can't say any of the dishes were memorable. All items had too much sauce, including the sashimi. Service was very slow. Too a long time to finish our dinner. I didn't enjoy the meal or the price. Definitely will not be returning.
Resentment on a Plate. With our grown kids not in town, we wanted to go to have a fine dining experience for our thanksgiving meal. The restaurant had a 3-course dinner for the evening that began with an amuse-bouche -- a chunk of pork belly in a sweet BBQ type sauce. It lacked any refinement, was difficult to eat with the small spoon provided, and was chewy. But it did prepare us (as an amuse-bouche is intended to) for what to expect the rest of the evening. We paid an additional cost to the fixed price to enjoy the foie gras as the first course. Unfortunately, the foie gras was unremarkable, lacked a proper sear, and the accompanying bits (pear? mushroom?) did little to add any sparkle to the dish. The busboy cleared our table completely I guess believing we had already had our main course. After a very long time my husband's rib eye arrived blue (supposed to be medium rare) along with my order of sea bass (we agreed that the food was convention-fare). The waiter showed up halfway through the course with our desserts in hand. "Premature?" he asked. "Clearly," we responded. The apple pie had a wet crust and tasteless apples. The waiter was friendly, if inept, but the rest of the staff seemed almost hostile, perhaps wishing to be at their own homes for the holiday. The meal was so disappointing, particularly as the restaurant at one time was considered to be one of the finest in Pasadena. We will not be returning.
Terrible food and service. Worst sea bass I've ever had. And service was equally terrible. First, the waiter took my husband's order before mine--something that true fine establishments do not do. Second, the reservation was for 4 people. We checked in 15 minutes early, and yet, when our table was ready 25 minutes later, the table had been set for only three people. Third, when we ordered the Grand Marnier souffle, the waiter made a face and asked whether we know what Grand Marnier is. Who doesn't know, and why would he ask that question? It's both bizarre and insulting. Fourth, instead of saying goodbye to us at the end of the meal or even bringing our check to us, our waiter was busy chatting away in French with some other guests. I don't see why anyone has given this place a good review.
We had a delightful evening, and were able to enjoy meal in a busy restaurant without having to shout across the table to hear each other's conversation. The wait staff were appropriately prompt and polite without being intrusive in any way. The Maitre'd was very charming in a really French manner. One of my family's best ever dinner's out.
We went there to have a thanksgiving dinner. There was a fixed special menu with 3 courses. The first one was ok, the main one was awful (we couldn't eat it) and the dessert wasn't good. Nice service but the food was bad. Certainly wasn't worth the price - 70 per person.
Le restaurant le plus precocieux de Los Angeles! If anyone remembers the former Chez Sateau, then you will know what I mean when I say that Maison Akira does not quite make it as a classical French restaurant with an Asian (Japanese) flavor. Sateau was among the great Tables du Monde. Akira unfortunately falls short.
The ambiance is quiet with classical music playing lightly in the background. The hostess on the other hand is a bit loud and grating. The menu is extensive featuring fish, fowl and meat in a variety of choices. We had the signature miso marinated Chilean sea bass and the equally signature rack of lamb. Both were excellent beyond words and very well priced, surprisingly on the low end. The bass was succulent and rife with a myriad of flavors including lemon, ginger and miso. The lamb was also succulent and tender as a mother's heart. Cooked to a perfect medium rare, the bordeaux glaze added greatly to a marvelous taste of savory meat. Akira should however, not hide an ever so hot pepperoncini in the vegetables. It simply does not match the otherwise mouth watering experience and it threatens to turn this house of supposed haute cuisine into a taco stand.
The hidden peppers were only one of a few disappointments. The wine list is over priced and under represented, favoring lesser known chateaux and vintages. The amuse bouche was simply awful. It was a masquerade of caviar. Actually it was roe stewed in eggplant; not a good choice. It should be done away with immediately.
At the end of the dinner, we both agreed that the entrees made the event, but we are uncertain that they warrant a second visit.
It was perhaps the best buffet that I've been to in that they that made the decision to include only small amounts of very interesting and exquisitely made food. Instead of a giant tub of things to rifle through on a huge catering chafing dish as I expected, it's all plated nicely in small amounts on the table. As food is taken, it's quickly replaced by freshly made food from the kitchen, so that none of what's there sits very long. Chef and owner Akira himself stood at the carving table to serve you the best cuts of lamb and beef, and he watches what gets taken or moved out of place. I saw him regularly go walk out and fuss over the plating and arranging things neatly back into place. In this way, even though it's a very small amount of space, there is a huge variety of food and each little hors d'oeuvre sized morself is beautifully done. From freshly made nigiri sushi and makizushi, to roast rosemary lamb, there is an attention to detail that made me really surprised at the price range. e.g. You get endless mimosa / champagne for only an additional $3! This has to be the best value in the Pasadena area. My senior aged parents were so surprised and had the best time. (There's a discount for 65+! And children under 3 are free.) What a tremendous achievement!
The service was very attentive; servers came by regularly to exchange plates for fresh ones and of course, to top off that mimosa.
Make sure to come exactly at 11am when the restaurant opens as you'll get the best variety of selection of nigiri sushi that way. Since there's not a lot of space, it is not the same stuff that gets replated - there's a rotating selection that is placed as food is taken.
Went to Maison Akira for my birthday and it was also their 19th Anniversary of being in business, so Chef Akira had prepared a special fixed menu for the evening. The highlight for me was the tender and steak Wagyu that you could cut with a fork. Chef Akira makes the best sauces for all his meat and vegetable dishes. You never know what delicious flavor of mousse or sauce awaits you. The lobster was delicious with it's own special sauce. Another favorite was a soup that was tasty and amazing, not your average wonton soup, but a delight and I plan on calling ahead next time we go there so Chef Akira can prepare for us in advance, which they will do if you have a favorite on the menu. The service is superb with avid attention paid to water and coffee refills. Maison Akira is the place to go for that special day!
Finally got to Maison Akira's Sunday brunch, which did not disappoint: leg of lamb and roast beef cooked to medium rare perfection, excellent fresh sushi and rolls, chawan mushi in just right tiny cups, plus 2 glasses of delicious champagne, coffee, and dozens of wonderful desserts--cheesecake, pecan pie, macaroons, chocolate mousse--tiny tastes, just the right size to be able to taste several different desserts without filling up too much. We drove from Palos Verdes, 1 hour to the restaurant, but this restaurant/cuisine is worth it. The only thing that disappointed, but was caught too late, was that we were charged full price, not the senior rate even though it was clear that all of us were way over 62--how about 20 years over? The server wasn't careful about this, so overcharged us. Still, I would recommend this chef and restaurant, one of my favorites in all of Los Angeles!
Four stars overall. Food was executed well, with one or two mistakes. The lobster bisque flavor was good, but someone forgot to pick over the lobster meet for shells and cartilage. I found both in my soup. Not necessary a showstopper, but certainly did take away from the course. Amuse bouche, first course of shrimp with wasabi caviar, and dessert of apple tart and the flourless cake excellently executed. Main course of flat iron and mushrooms was good. Duck breast was excellently prepared. The regular crème brulee was great, but the green tea one was a bit flat in flavor. Overall, a great dining experience albeit with a few minor errors.
Ambience wise, had an instance where someone was playing with the music type and volume at 6pm. This really should be fixed before the restaurant opens at 5:30 as it does take away from the front of the house. Décor otherwise was five star - clearly some thought was put into it. Service by both the main waiter and his assistant were impeccable.
I had the four-course set. The Chilean sea bass meat is tough. The flavor and plating is still good. Service is not up to par on the day we were there, probably because there was a function/event happening in the other room. I got what I needed and water is filled, but no wait staff to check if the food is okay. I like how the chef deconstructed the bento box to four courses so my dining partner and I can have the same number of courses. Soup, souffle, and scallops are good.
I frequent this establishment many times and would say it is one of the best within the Pasadena area. I brought my friend over for Sunday brunch. Phenomenal service. Excellent quality of food. Best of all, the professional chef/owner, Akira Hirose, is very kind and humble, even engaging with the customers. Overall 5/5, worth it.
We had a Sunday buffet brunch for $39 per person, $42 per person with champagne. Server was attentive and our Juice and mimosa were being refilled quickly as soon as they went out. Every dish was good. The dessert was lovely. The overall experience was worth the price.
Went here for the first time for dine LA and wasn't impressed. Had 'surf and turf' which was steak and shrimp. The shrimp were pathetic. Completely unseasoned, maybe a little larger than a nickel and were served mixed in white rice on the side. The steak (ordered medium rare) was the size of a deck of cards, and equally thin, and mine was overcooked, closer to medium well. It did have good flavor, tho. The soft shell crab appetizer was amazing, however, and the highlight of our night. I might give it another try and see if the regular menu works out better.
