Maharaja Ratings and Reviews
I love Indian food and was encouraged by the Menu. The appetizers were very good - Veg Pakora and Tandoori sampler were excellent. Half price bottle of Pinot Noir very nice. But the Shahi Korma ( one chicken, one lamb) , the shrimp Masala and accompanying basmati rice (which smelt heavenly) were all disappointing , all being too salty. I adore Kormas and they lacked the depth of flavor and creaminess I love and as I said were too salty.Chicken Biryani was good. Naan bread fine. Service was really good ( what we've come to expect from a good Indian restaurant) So I am mixed as to whether I'd go back. Probably not, as it was an hour's drive.
Since we were seated until the food was served 1 hour passed. I complained and, besides apparently apologizing, they did not care too much. We were a group of 8 people and, after the delay and mismanaging the different checks, still charged us by default a 20% tip. This is unacceptable.
The quality of the food was just below average.
This restaurant, that used to be one my favorite ones in town, has gone downhill in quality and service. It is now deleted from my list. Never again.
Maharajah is a neighborhood gem and just won Best of Milwaukee Indian cuisine. Always welcoming fresh Indian food with friendly attentive service. Word is out that this is an excellent casual and local dining place. Everything ordered is tastefully prepared. Naan is outstanding!
Love this place. It is a neighborhood gem. Nothing fancy with a somewhat dated decor but don't let that bother you. Try the assortment of naan, Bryani, tikki Marsala, vindaloo, assorted vegetarian dishes and samosas. Flavors are delicious and spices are artfully applied. I am never disappointed.
The food is wonderful here. I love the authenticity. My husband is heart healthy vegan, and this is one of the few places he gets lots of choices. And me, I am a pesctarian, so I love that there are options for me also, without having to be completely vegan.
Always good service and love that the owners are ever present.
The food was alright, but sadly the portions were really small! Every other Indian restaurant that I've been to (US, Japan, Korea) have been larger portions meant for sharing. The Chicken Tikka Masala was decent tasting but for the price was half the size of other places I've been to. Also the service was really slow. If you're in a hurry (1 hr), don't recommend. If you don't mind taking your time and waiting around this is for you.
I invited some friends out and asked them what would they like to try? I was told Indian food, but my wife might like it I told him mine either but what the heck... Let's go to Maharaja! So we did our wives were blown away! They could not believe how good the food was the Lamb, chicken wow. Definitely a five-star place we loved it we had a great time the service was amazing very friendly place we're going back!!
We had a table for 8 at Maharaja prior to the Taj Express Bollywood show at the Pabst Theater. Our group included 3 teenagers who had never tried authentic Indian food before. The wait staff expertly recommended some entrees that the kids would enjoy, and the recommendations were spot on. I had the Madras Chicken (medium spice), which was among the best dishes I have had in a long time. Others at the table had Vindaloo, Rogan Josh, and Briyani, and everyone raved about their choices. We definitely look forward to dining at Maharaja again soon.
P.S. The waitress for our table was new to the restaurant that evening, however, the management had paired her with a senior waitress, so our service did not suffer in any regard. Top notch!
The food was amazing! Our server was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and offered suggestions on combinations that went well together. We ordered a kebab as an appetizer which was very good. And we tried four different entrees, all were incredibly delicious. They also offered entrees in your choice of spice level so everyone could enjoy their meal with just the right amount of spice. We loved it here and can't wait to return soon.
I like Indian food, but I don't remember which dishes are my favorites, so the buffet is perfect! One in our party uses a rolling walker so getting to both sides of the two sided buffet is out. But we are comfortable with helping out. The staff is helpful and friendly.
Maharaja was excellent as always. The servers are knowledgeable and attentive. The owner seated us at "his special table" as we had made a reservation with Open Table. The server answered all of our questions and the food came out at an appropriate time after we had completed our appetizer. They let you choose your spice level, so those with sensitive stomachs need not worry eating here or maybe trying Indian food for the first time. A great place for a date night dinner.
Overall excellent dining experience.
I tried the saag lamb and my husband tried what I believe was called the shahikorma lamb with a tumeric/cashew/coconut curry sauce.
Both were outstanding with generous portions - we had leftovers for lunch the next day.
The lamb was exceptionally tender and cooked to perfection, and the saag and the curry tasted freshly prepared and were spicy yet well balanced with the delicate flavors of the spinach and lamb - the jasmine rice was light, fragrant, and moist but not sticky - cooked to perfection.
As we were waiting for our meal, they served complimentary crisp, light Indian flat bread with tamarind and mint/jalepeno sauces for dipping that were tangy and refreshing and light enough that we retained our appetites for the main meal.
The wait staff was prompt, cheerful and attentive to our needing to make an 8pm show at the Riverside Theater which we easily accomplished with a 6pm reservation. The owner walked from table to table to greet each guest and ask how we were enjoying our meal.
The restaurant was moderately full on a late summer evening. We were unexpectedly pleased with the Maharaja, and would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to others.
This was my first experience with Indian cuisine and I can't say enough good things about it. The waitress was very helpful with recommendations and explanations of the menu offerings. Both my husband and I were very pleased with the service and the food. Can't wait to go back and try something different!!
