Everything was delicious. Portions were great. I will be back soon.
We were excited to try the restaurant with its’ ‘southern infusion’ and made reservations for Mother’s Day Brunch. The restaurant wasn’t too crowded when we arrived and we were seated in the small dining room downstairs. As the tables were seated, the noise level escalated considerably. The wait staff were very friendly, but the service was slow. The food was marginal at best. The waffles were over cooked and bland; the ‘fresh fruit’ was a compote. The fried chicken didn’t resemble any southern cooked fried chicken I’ve had, it was a bit greasy and unseasoned, except for the ‘hot oil’ (code for spicy) which set my mouth on fire. We ordered the coconut cake for dessert and the coconut was stale. They order the cakes in every day, they don’t make their own, and they didn’t realize the coconut was bad until we told them. Overall, a disappointing experience. We won’t go back.
Delicious food, quaint venue and good service. Brunch was amazing
The ambiance and location of this restaurant is wonderful. The service was superb and the drinks were perfect. Unfortunately, the food was less than desirable and the taste was extremely poor and lacked flavor. There were also very little options to choose from, especially if you are not a meat eater and also no options for children.
Go somewhere else. Food is dull, completely lacking any flavor or creativity. Very disappointing.
The shrimp and grits were great! Our server was really nice too.
It was fantastic! I cant wait to go ahead! This place has a great food and staff!
A positive Old Town experience.. Will add to our roster of places to return too and recomend
Superb brunch menu!
Delicious with great service and ambiance. No parking nearby but that's Old Town.
We'd been here for drinks at the small upstairs bar before, so returned for our anniversary dinner. Magnolias has a lovely romantic ambiance, and the food is amazing. Get the stuffed dates appetizer, trust me. Drinks were delicious, entrees were pricey but worth it, and service was friendly and prompt. Only quibble is that it can get loud - upstairs was only half full but all the hard surfaces meant it sounded louder than it should have. It's a place you can dress classy and not feel out of place, though casual dress is ok too. Will return, and highly recommend!
Deviled eggs, bacon wrapped dates, and fried pickles were great starters. The pork chop and shrimp and grits were main favorites! Great service!
The food was amazing and the service top notch!
We were the only ones in the restaurant so we had good service. The food was very good.
Went for brunch. Food was well-prepared and tasty enough.!Portions were not huge but neither were the menu prices. Coffee was a bit scorched. Place is small & cramped downstairs, but expect that for Old Town. Need to train the wait staff to go each patron and take their order (when possible) to not have to scream across the table. (Understand can’t do this at a booth.). Came for a birthday with a cake. My companions were surprised with a $25 cake cutting fee —- I wasn’t but got push back on paying it until I flat out said I didn’t want to waste the cake not eating it. Don’t think I will go out of my way to go here again. But, if in Alexandria, would consider trying dinner or lunch here. However, was not worth a special trip from MD to come for brunch. Maybe should have gone to location in DC instead???
I enjoyed the ambiance and overall experience at Magnolia's, but my Salmon Benedict and home fries were very luke warm. I was not that impressed by the food.
We had an unfortunate experience with our server, we barely saw her and when we did she was rude and rushed. The food ended up being delicious but the rest of our experience really ruined our night out. Our table was slanted, the room was very loud, we were never offered a 2nd round of drinks, and again just terrible service. We really wanted to like this place but based on this experience, I would not recommend it to a friend.
When we first walked in, we were really impressed with the warmness of the hostess and the decor/ambiance. As we waited for our server and after a few back and forth trips from the server, she was either new to this restaurant or just really nervous. She didn't seem well informed about the spirit menu. The bussers were confused. They gave me my duck confit & dumpling order, but it wasn't for me, it was for a different table. The food took a while. While we were done, we waited a while for the check. Our reservation was at 7:45 pm and we didn't leave til after 9 pm. it wasn't that busy by the time we left. I want to love the duck confit & dumpling, but it had a sour taste to it. Not sure if it was the onions, but the duck fat helped mask it. The best thing about the night was the spicy crab dip. That was the only winner.
As always, the food and drinks were great. Once the place filled up, the service slowed down and the noise level increased. Luckily, we didn’t mind too much as we weren’t in a rush to leave.
From the moment you walk in the door of this historic building in the old town section of Arlington you are greeted and welcomed as if you are one of the family. The dining area is really more like a Southern living room with a fireplace and the bar area is perfect for intimate conversations over wine. The food is Southern cooking updated to include seared tuna and other favorites, but don't forget the traditions like the collard greens and the best corn bread I have ever had. I sat by the window looking out on the historic old town, and got a history lesson of the historic building from the hostess. You might find Southern food a little cheaper, but never better and not with better ambiance.
We go here often and really love the place .. everything from
The hostess to the wait staff is great !!!!!
The food was delicious and the restaurant is lovely. Our server was polite and attentive until she wasn’t. Very odd. We heard her chatting happily with every other table in the room. When she came to clear our table, she did just that, cleared the table, dropped off the check and walked away. No “how was your meal?” No “can I bring you some coffee?” No “Did you save room for pecan pie?” Just silence. Very odd and a very disappointing end to a lovely meal. We did mention it to the hostess on our way out.
The food was well-prepared and wonderful.
Our table upstairs was in the lounge/bar area, which had an energetic bartender shaking martinis, and bar patrons enjoying themselves. The music was 60's R&B playing at a perfect background level, but there is not one sound absorbent material up there - one brick wall, three plaster walls, and uncovered hardwood floors - the upstairs is LOUD! Anything anyone said was amplified, and by the end of dinner, everybody in the place had to raise their voice to be heard. Unavoidable result of a hard surfaced room - high levels of noise require higher levels of speaking resulting in even more noise.
Service was generally good. Our primary server was friendly, if a bit loud, but more informal than you would expect at this restaurant's price point (expensive, even for Old Town). The spoon that my wife requested for her soupy entree (table setting = knife, fork & cloth napkin only) initially arrived as a fork, no big deal, but when the spoon finally did get to us, it was simply dropped into the middle of the table. Woulda been nice and polite to hand it to the person who asked for it. Bussing the table after the main course reminded me of our garbage men when they're behind schedule - lotsa speed, clanking plates/silverware, no conversation, and very little finesse, an unnecessary detraction from a nicely prepared and presented meal. Note: the young man who actually delivered our meals to the table was courteous and attentive.
This was my wife's birthday. The staff had been fantastic about shepherding the flowers I had ordered to our table before we got there. We appreciated that, and when our dessert came out (ice cream) it came with a nice little birthday candle, but unfortunately the candle arrived standing up at the end of a fork, wedged between the tines. The thought was sweet, the presentation was just plain weird.
Magnolia's food is a delight. It would serve Magnolia well to focus on the details of its service.
Overpriced food. Loud room. Average food quality.
Food was delicious & the staff was really really great!
It was a quiet night; the bartender upstairs took the opportunity to walk us through the cocktail list and dinner menu, offering helpful suggestions. The staff was attentive. I left a pair of sunglasses behind, and the staff was helpful in affording me the opportunity to pick them up before the restaurant opened to the public.
Sorry to say eggs where cold and over cooked.
No Biscuits so that option ruined about five brunch options on an already limited menu. Others at the table seemed happy with their order.
The food was good but the service was a but we ordered a starter which didn’t come til after our meals came, we had to get up to go ask for salt and pepper, I never received the fruit that was supposed to come with my meal and we had to get up to ask for the check too. I mean they were a small place and it was prime brunch time but we probably won’t go back.
Service and food was fantastic! Will definitely be coming back!
We were sat in front of the fireplace, it was super cozy on a cool spring night. The food was excellent with the brussel sprouts side as a starter and the main courses of confit duck and dumplings (extreme comfort food) balanced with a strawberry fields salad. We paired everything with a reasonable and deliciously devine malbec. Service was warm but unique- actually hard to descibe... Great people watching spot as well! Bravo MK, we cant wait to come back!!!
Service was great, my dish was not good, sausage chicken benedict, my date’s omelette was ok.
Great food from start to finish. Cocktails were really good as well
My husband and I came here for a date night. The seating was cramped, and I’m a small person. The ambiance was good. The noise level was louder than I hoped, but we could still hold a conversation. The service was a little slow and our particular server was curt and non-engaging (probably because he had too many tables).
All that being said, I will definitely go back because the rockfish was, hands down, THE BEST prepared seafood dish I have ever had. And it wasn’t just the fish. The sides (blackened carrots and a polenta cake?) and sauce were unique and packed with flavor too. The Cajun crab dip was also delicious and unique.
So overall, I highly recommend this restaurant, especially if you’re a foodie!
I went at 10:30 on a Saturday and was greeted with very prompt service. Without a doubt, the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had. An amazing brunch place I would recommend to everyone despite being a little on the expensive side.
Food was ok but nothing spectacular for the price. Overall just average.
We had such a relaxing experience at Magnolias celebrating my husband’s birthday. The food and service was impeccable. We loved our fried pickles, shrimp and grits, corn bread, bread pudding, and cocktails! We can’t wait to go back!
A perfect spot for a romantic dinner. Started with Deviled Eggs and moved on to Blackened Seafood Pasta. The food was incredible, and the service was great. I will definitely return.
What a great find in Old Town. The duck confit with dumplings was amazing!
I rarely write reviews on OpenTable, but our experience at Magnolias was so good, I decided I needed to share
This restaurant has been open for several years but we’d never been, just overlooked it. Decided to give it a try with another couple & were quite pleased. The setting is lovely AND, noise level was minimal, yay!
We dined upstairs, tables were nicely spaced, the bar area is upstairs, but no noise from it
Our food was delicious, definitely Southern flare & spices, generous portions
This overlooked restaurant be be on our permanent list!
Not a lot of different or exciting brunch options, but what was there was done well. Manager was delightful and ambiance was perfect, I just wish something had been done to spice up the simpler offerings.
