Magnolias on King Ratings and Reviews
We celebrated my husband's birthday here and were happy with the choice. The venison chops were excellent, the mussels plump and delicious, and the fried okra crisp and tasty. The upstairs dining room has a fireplace and was decorated for the holidays, giving it a festive and cozy feeling. The service was friendly if a bit slow. We enjoyed our visit and plan to come again.
First time visit ... and for sure will return on next visit to Alexandria. The pork chop and the shrimp & grits were both good choices ... done as expected, and excellent taste & portions. Service was a little slow to start ... seemed inconsistent based on staff person. And we had the distinct feeling we were being rushed.
Only issue ... we had an table by a window which was great to people watch ... the inferior sealing on the window permitted entry of the cigarette smoke from those souls who elected to smoke nearby. And of course, they don't do just one. But cannot blame the chef/kitchen staff -- they did their job well.
Brunch plans fell through so we looked on Open Table for something close by. I’m so glad we ended up at Magnolias because it was lovely. The staff was wonderful and the food was tasty (and surprisingly fast). We left quite satisfied with the whole experience.
I’ve been for dinner and had a great time. This was my first brunch experience. I thought the offerings for food were great and a wide enough variety. The server was kind and attentive. I remember having very well thought out cocktails for dinner and was excited to return, slightly disappointed that there were the brunch basics. A full cocktail list would be great to have tableside or listed on your brunch menu.
Past visits have been very good. On this occasion the food was incredibly spicy, not what we were used to, especially the shrimp and grits.. We were a party of four and three of us had the same reaction.None of us finished our entrees. There appetizer, the stuffed dates were very good. Perhaps this was an off night but I hesitate to return because of this.
We got there when the restaurant opened. Ambiance was good; service was good; food was just OK. For a restaurant that says its specialty is southern comfort food, I tried the daily special of fried chicken and waffle expecting what I used to eat as a kid in the South. It was a belgian waffle with 4 fried chicken strips on top. Flavor was OK but the presentation was far from creative. For the prices, they can do better.
We'd been wanting to try the dining room after enjoying a great happy hour a few weeks before. We got there and the hostess knew it was for my husband's birthday based on our reservation. We were seated at lovely window table on the second floor. We shared a Caesar salad which was unremarkable. Fresh, but a little under dressed and lacking flavor. My husband got the local fish which was rockfish and I got the shrimp and grits. Both were presented well and were very fresh, but neither was outstanding for any particular reason. Our server was nice but not super attentive. Overall it was just ok. I guess because it was my husband's birthday, I wanted a little bit more of a wow factor, especially given some of the great reviews. I'd go back for happy hour, but probably not a full dinner experience.
For a DC-area brunch this is reasonably priced, but it was underwhelming in terms of service and flavor. Our server had a hard time with some pretty basic questions/requests - a coffee refill took three requests and about fifteen minutes, we couldn't get an answer about whether the eggs were cooked in butter or oil*, etc. The serving sizes on the menu items were about right, and again, reasonably priced for DC. However, the chicken on the chicken and waffles was extremely dry, with no butter to be found for the waffle, and about a tablespoon of maple syrup, so it was sort of a chewy experience. The fish-and-grits combo had good individual components but left a weird taste in the diner's mouth.
A very nice southern style cooking restaurant. There is a very attractive, small traditional dining room and a lounge on the second floor where the bar is located. The prices are reasonable, especially on Mondays which is their 1/2 price wine night. I had the beef cheeks which were quite nice.
We were disappointed with our dining experience at Magnolias. Given it was Saturday night, and the restaurant was not fully occupied, I think others may have had similar experiences.
The food was passable, but nothing memorable, except for the stuffed date appetizer. They were unique and delicious. The bottle of white wine we ordered was served barely cool, and I had to request a full bucket of ice to try and chill it before our second glass.
My husbands prime rib special, was as unappealing a piece of beef, that I've ever seen. It was well undercooked, based on a medium rare request, and grizzly. The Caesar salad was bland. The Brussels sprouts would be considered tasty, if you are a fan.
I ordered shrimp and grits. They were good, but I've had better in many other restaurants. Lastly, the sweet potato pie that came with my husbands dinner special was dry.
Given all the dining options available in Alexandria, I was really disappointed with our decision to dine here.
We did have a very nice waitress which improved our overall dining experience, but we will not return.
Overall, Magnolia's is decent and I would go back if a friend invited me here. However, I would not go on my own again. I went on a Thursday, and the best things were the live music and the Thursday dinner special (Ribs). We first ordered the pulled BBQ duck and crab dip for happy hour. We made it at 6:45pm, so we were able to get our "appetizers" at a good price. The grits with the duck were cold (we sent it back) and there were a few shells in the crab dip, even though the dip was quite yummy. My friend and I both ordered the ribs and were able to choose our own 2 sides, great meal. We finished with sweet potato pie and vanilla ice cream for desert. The pie was lacking and the ice cream was not a smooth, creamy, texture, but rather "icy" as if it was kind of old or refrozen after it melted.
This is one of our (my friends and I have theater tickets) favorite restaurants in Old Town. This last visit was wonderful as always. The food is really good and the menu changes regularly so there is always something new to try. The venison chops were outstanding.
normally not a fan of them, but Magnolia’s on King has THE BEST bacon wrapped dates! i will go back again and again. southern atmosphere that feels welcoming and warm, service is great, and the food is to die for. in addition to the dates, definitely try the Magnolia’s New Fashioned
