I’ve this place! So upset they closed but glad we got there the last night they were open. Hope they find a new location soon!!!
The restaurant was quaint, but music was discordant and too loud! We had the select menus especially prepared for us, supposedly:
Review of food. Salad entree with shaved aged Parmesan was the best we had, but just average in presentation. Second course with wild boar rageau was mushy. Pasta was mushy. Tomato sauce on ragu was cold and not very tasty. Third course was very mushy gnocchi with same cold tomato sauce. I have had gnocchi all over the world, but this was not gnocchi. It was terrible. Desert was something I couldn’t eat. Took one taste and found one sliced banana covered in some kind of sauce. It was brown, but did not taste like chocolate. The under layer was a hard ring of something that didn’t exist. Maybe a hard tortilla!
Believe me, I wanted to love this restaurant. We all did (4 of us), but it was very disappointing. Maybe the chef was ill?
Great experience just be ready for it to be loud
Only drawback was the acoustics...people were talking and laughing so loud we couldn’t hear ourselves talk!
Absolutely phenomenal! Chef and owner Marco Maestoso along with his team made us feel like we were dining at his home with family. Being Italian and Spanish this is what family is all about, gathering at the kitchen and enjoying stories all the while sipping on wine and toasting the host. Thank you for a memorable evening! We hope to see you in Las Vegas soon!!

Sad to see the "dim sum" trolley system is no longer part of the experience. However, food remains excellent and it is fun to sit at counter and watch the preparations.
Always innovative and carefully prepared Italian food from actual Italians...so it’s different from, and more adventurous than, Italian-American cuisine. Staff is extremely friendly, efficient and knowledgeable.
Oh my gosh what a great find! The food is amazing! Very authentic modern Italian. Not large portions which I actually appreciated. No waste. We had the Cace de Pepe, Arancinni, and the burrata pinsa. So fresh and all flavors perfectly balanced. It is in a larger strip mall but don’t let that fool you. Well worth dining here.
Great food, our server Maria was outstanding,
Service was not good. Took 10 minutes to greeted and then about 20 mins to take my order.
Excellent inventive food, marred by horrible service, bad attitude, and a refusal to honor an OpenTable reservation in a loud and busy room.
Best meal I have had in San Diego, my third visit and my guests first. We were both more than impressed. Food was amazing and the service was even better. Make sure you visit next time you’re in the city!
It was a Rome experience in the heart of Hillcrest!
Great service, food and drinks! We were a party of three and we sat outside and had a great time. My wife forgot to tell our waiter that she doesn't like goat cheese and when her salad came with goat cheese and she mentioned it, our friendly waiter graciously gave her another salad without goat cheese, no fuss.
Fabulous Roman food with a touch of creativity. The artichoke prepared in a way that evokes and blends the Jewish Quarter of Rome and the rest of the city. Delicious. I highly recommend Maestoso.
We first tried Maestoro on a visit to San Diego last year. When we knew we would be back in town there was no doubt we would come back. Fun, great staff and excellent food.
Great authentic Italian food. They also speak Italian which is nice.
The food is outstanding. This was our third visit. The first 2 times the place was packed. It was half empty for a Friday night. We loved the cart that had apps you could choose from. Apparently the health dept did not like this concept. Not sure why the health dept allows the cart at dim sum but not this restaurant. Hope they survive because the food is outstanding and prices are great!!!
Service was great.
It was my birthday.
Everything was exceptional! The Pinsa was so good, we ordered a second one, just to have leftovers.
Excellent food and excellent staff. Definitely going back soon.
Out favorite spot to come whether it is a quick bite to eat or an evening to be shared with friends and family. You immediately feel at home, and sitting at the bar will give you that childhood feeling of watching your mama or nonna cook you a meal.
The pizza here is incredible! Probably one of the best pizzas that I have ever had. The staff was nice and helpful. The service was good. I highly recommend this restaurant, especially for the Roman style pizza! Amazing!
Wonderful owner! Fabulous wait staff and the most amazing delicious food. Great wine list. Outstanding actually. I brought my friends from NYC and they loved it, and my husband and I are italophiles who eat a lot of fantastic italian fare, but this was really amazing. Creative menu, clean, delicious ingredients and great taste, texture, etc. I highly recommend everything. Seriously. Brava!!!
This place has become my go to place when some says where do u want to go?
Mixed up our orders, meat tough and likely frozen, not a good experience
The dishes seemed authentically simple. The desserts were inventive and not your typical Italian desserts. A pleasant surprise.
Excellent food, and the staff was cordial, friendly, and attentive. Also, our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine selection with great explanations!
Fabulous, authentic Italian food with attentive, personalized service and, as always, a visit from the chef. This place is a jewel and deserves to be supported by all who appreciate Italian food as more than red sauce and California-style pizza.
Could not think of a better way to celebrate my birthday last night, than to have Chef Maestoso Marcook prepare his ten course tasting... The chef tasting is so good it’s too difficult to pick a favorite.
Food was very good, loved my fresh pasta with fondue sauce & a hint of dried orange peel. Different & very good. Husband & friends enjoyed their meals too. Restaurant is too loud so we moved to outside patio. Luckily it was a lovely evening.
Marco and his team are great! They were very welcoming and service outstanding. Great Italian food with a little twist to each dish. Definitely recommend having one of their pizzas. Light and airy dough with fresh toppings. In the appetizers, I recommend the octopus which was sliced so thin that it melted in your mouth. Also save rooms for dessert. We had a dish that was like lemon meringue pie with panna cotta inside. Will be back when in the area.
Had a later reservation but they got us in early. I had the Chef Sampler and my wife the Lamb Chops—both great with unique takes on Italian food. Really new tastes with good takes on some classics. Great service, nice outside ambiance, a little noisy because of street traffic. Chef came out to chat. Really had a good dinner.
Let’s start with Marco is amazing - thank you! We are really lucky to have this gem of a restaurant just down the street. Had a great experience with the taste 10 menu. Every dish was excellent and of great variety. Would highly recommend anyone to Maestoso - I know I will be back!
This was our second time at the restaurant. We came back for my husband’s birthday. It is simply fantastic! Maestoso is our new favorite restaurant in San Diego. Don’t miss it. The pizza is to die for and everything else is equally extraordinary. We were not as wild about the choice of desserts, but nothing is perfect. Though they come very close!
Yet another great Italian in SD. Nice that you don’t have to go to Little Italy. The chef puts a little Nouvelle Cuisine spin on some of the dishes; check out their ‘pizzas’ and the signature dessert. Waiter was fun, as was the dessert chef who came out to see us. Great wines by the glass.
This was our second time at Maestoso’s. It was obvious from the time we were seated that things weren’t going smoothly. Not sure if it was a shortage of wait and/or kitchen staff. However, the food was excellent and, more importantly, everyone did their very best to make up for long wait time and ensure we were happy, including several apologies and complimentary drinks. It came across that they really cared about our experience. That goes a very long way with me. We will most definitely return!
My friend and I loved this restaurant! We sat at the counter watching the pizza and dessert get prepared. The pizza (flaky crust), pasta (aldente), and panna cotta (with passion fruit topping) all tasted so good! When we asked for truffles on our pizza, they gave us more than we would have expected. The chef and staff definitely made us feel welcome and checked on us a few times throughout the night. We loved the food so much, we went back the next night!
