Mader's German Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Our waitress and food were very good. This was a Wednesday night before Thanksgiving so it was not very busy. I was disappointed to find many burned out light bulbs and the glasses above the bar were extremely dirty... the whole place needs a good dusting and new lighting, the CFL bulbs are terrible.
Came in for dinner before a show and had very high expectations given this place's history. But we left with nothing really positive to talk about. Food and service were acceptable but nothing to write home (or in a review) about. We had two entries and a salad. Salad was swimming in a salty bacon dressing so a bad start. Pork schnitzel was no where near as good as others we had had. Chicken filet was also fine but not impressive. Summary: meal was a lot of money for simple Germany food that wasn't all that great.
Overall it was a pleasant experience. The food was a bit on the dry side and it did not have very much flavor. The Rheinischer sauerbraten was the most disappointing. I was only given a butter knife, which should have been sufficient, but it was so dry I ended up having to use the bread knife to cut it. Eric, the server, was helpful and the pretzel bread and potato dumplings were delicious. I should have said something about the food but did not as we were attending an event immediately after dinner at the performing arts center . The theater waits for no one!
Didn't actually get to eat. Sat for so long waiting for our drink that we left. It wasn't bust as it was the middle of the day, so not sure why so slow. Would have liked to try the food too. Rated food at 1 because there is no other option when we didn't get to eat. They really didn't seem to care we were leaving either. I guess their 'celebrity clientele' is enough to sustain their business.
In summary: WORST food I've ordered in a restaurant. Utterly devoid of flavor, dry and bland. I would not have wanted to pay $3 for that "meal", certainly not the $103 they swindled me for. Unprofessional and fairly inattentive staff. I had a better experience and got better service from the lovely valet guy.
The food was the worst food I've ordered in a restaurant. the initial flavor of the "sauce" is fleeting and then 1 second later it feels like you're chewing nothing, no flavor. I could not even bring myself to finish my entree it was such a displeasure to eat, I would have rather not eaten than eat that gruel.
The decor is novelty and the cheese board starter was good. Those are the only redeeming qualities of this establishment. The waitress was quite cold and impersonal, we didn't get a single smile or friendly acknowledgment. The other staff members were pretty unprofessional otherwise as well. We could hear them loudly talking crap about I'm assuming another co-worker and shooting the breeze. I'm quite sure the waitress gave me the wrong drink. Also didn't ID me either. Which is a bit sketchy tbh. I'm 21 and I get carded all the time and look pretty young.
Went for brunch. Opened doors 5 minutes late while a line formed in the sun. Came early so we could get served first. Despite asking for two high chairs with our reservation we were pulled to the side while they got them which put 20 people ahead of us. Otherwise the German atmosphere is the best in the area.
Great food. Love the fresh shrimp and smoked salmon. The carved prime rib was dry with no juice provided despite requesting it. Only horse radish. Great sauerbraten too. Omelettes to order. Desserts ok but lacking German specialties. Also 2 year old charged $15 for brunch and ate very little.
We have always really loved coming here, but had our first disappointing experience on Sat. 7/29. There was a LOT going on in the city that day: Pink Floyd concert, Brewers/Cubs game and Germanfest. But for the price of the entrees, the meal was a disappointment. A restaurant of this caliber should have been better prepared for the anticipated traffic! They ran out of bread, so no bread basket. They ran out of individual dishes for the red cabbage and sourkraut so served "family style", the sauerbraten was a HUGE disappointment! This has always been my favorite, but this was just like plain roast beef with the sour gravy on it. It had not been marinated and was flavorless! NOT worth the $35! The waitress was great and apologetic, not her fault and was very attentive, but felt something should have been offered up to offset the restaurant's short comings!
This is a classic, old school, must try once, restaurant. Unfortunately, they haven't kept up with the food scene and are still preparing their dishes as they always have. The waitress we had was serviceable and not too knowledgeable about their food. I would not go back.
Went to Mader's because my husband and I had been there as children. Atmosphere very different, much less welcoming. Waiter said that he could not bring us bread until we'd ordered a full entree. We had every intention of doing that, but it seemed very "cheesy," and I'm not sure we would eat at Mader's again.
Mader's is old-school, German, brilliance.
Only problem is food is wildly inconsistent and the food comes a bit faster than you'd like for a fancy meal. We wanted more time to chat and drink, and even ordered our entrees well after our appetizers and drinks and it still...came a bit too fast.
