Creative sushi with same sushi served in multiple waves of preparation. No need for soy sauce. And not a place for roll eaters.
Macku never ceases to impress. We usually go for the omakase dinner but due to current pregnancy we decided to try all the cooked items on his menu this time. They were all fantastic. The soups are all delicious and rich. The chawanmushi is one of the best I have ever had. The presentation for all the dishes that came out of the kitchen are just a beautiful as all the artful sushi we usually have and the quality of the ingredients likewise just as high. The service was great throughout the night. This is the first time we have not sat at the sushi bar and the servers were very attentive (especially with the amount of water I drink with this pregnancy, I was amazed that my glass was never empty). I can't wait to be able to eat raw fish again but in the mean time it's nice to know Macku really can do it all and there are plenty of other things to enjoy at our favorite Japanese spot in the city.
The service was horrible. The server talked down to us and made us feel like ordering the Macku omakase dinner was a cheap move- recommending strongly that we upgrade one level. That would have changed our intended $75 per person to $120 per person. We went with the 5 course Macku omakase dinner after all. Every dish was delicious, but... our dinner took 2 hours and 45 minutes. Much of it was waiting in between courses for food from the kitchen. At the end (even after a complimentary 6th course of SHARED dessert) we felt that we should have been full. They offered more drinks when our glasses were full and disappeared when our glasses were empty. Surely, I should have gotten to enjoy more than 2 glasses of sake in that amount of time. The 5 course dinner only had 4 pieces of nigeri. We expected a bit more sushi, let alone food for the meal that came to $250 with a couple drinks and tip. It was tasty, but pretty much an appetizer and the service was so bad, I would not go back.
Excellent flavors and textures. Delightful care from servers.
Nice place, great dessert. But Very slow service and Average Sushi.
Their food is always amazing!!!
If you haven't been to this place in over a year, please review the menu. It has changed and I fully expect them to get a Michelin recommendation or even possibly a star soon. However, this is not the same price range as before. The food was amazing. The menu is a little confusing. Also, while we do not mind spending a lot of money on dinner, we really were surprised by the cost. If we had ordered everything that we wanted and were full, I suspect the bill would have been over $300. The Japanese whiskey selection is one of the best in the city as far as I can tell. Their old fashions were some of the very best ever. Again, if you are prepared for the price, you will love it.
The best sushi place in Chicago
We had to leave suddenly for unrelated reason and the staff handled it with grace and could not have been more accommodating. First class operation.
Very fresh, very creative sushi, expertly explained. Will return for the Omakase as it looked fantastic at the table next door. The bill was a bit of a shock ($180 for 2 with a few glasses of wine), but will return knowing it will be a splurge.
Very civilized, quiet and cmfortable upscale but not overpriced restaurant. Always reliable when entertaining out of town visitors. Parking is easy
This place is incredible! It's a hidden gem with incredible food.
I've eaten here three times now, and it never disappoints. The chef even prepared a 6-course vegetarian meal for one of our guests. Everything was incredible! Chef Macku is extremely talented and this restaurant is a rare find, definitely get the 5 or 6-course special!
This is now my favorite place for sushi. the combination of flavors is amazing. My husband is not a big sushi eater and loved the soft shell crab and lobster with filet. Great selection of drinks and fabulous service.
Fantastic Omakase, and great whisky selection including some rare Japanese.
Definitely worth it and a super fun/unique food experience. I went with my boyfriend for date night - he LOVES sushi and I barely tolerate a California roll haha. We both did the OMAKASE, each a different level. So we both got to try a large variety! We both loved the soups, my favorite was their take on a taco it was so delicious and his was probably the sashimi. We both enjoyed getting to try things outside our comfort zones like cooked baby crabs, shell and all! We'll definitely be coming back!
Only complaint is the wine pairings. They are pedestrian and not particularly paired with the food which is cream and excellently done.
This restaurant was truly awful. The food was either overly sweet or way too salty. The fish on the nigiri sushi was swallowed up in sauce - too bad the sauce couldn't completely mask how unfresh and ill-prepared the fish was. In fact, the fish was just outright disgusting. I have never had ootoro that made me gag before (honestly, how does that happen - ootoro is one of the fattiest and nonfishy cuts... It's not like I'm talking about mackerel). Each dish had no balance in flavor profile. It's almost like the chef had no concept of adding enough acidity.
Just do not go here. The price is extravagant for what you get. Even if the restaurant were cheap, I wouldn't go here. The food made me sick to my stomach. I felt seriously unwell. You're better off just getting a maki roll from places like whole foods (which obviously isn't high grade sushi, so that gives you an idea of how overpriced this restaurant is).
Their menu is very unique. Definitely suited toward a really special, amazing meal versus just ordinary (and more budget) sushi. Ingredients and preparations were incredibly unusual and delicious. Focus on sashimi and nigiri. We didn’t do omakase but I bet it’s fabulous. Whiskey assortments looked great. Not many vegetarian options but they were nice to accommodate and made some delicious veggie rolls for us. Will be our new go to for really good sushi or for bringing picky guests.
Absolutely outstanding! Macku is a sweetheart artist he knows so well the cousine he serves ! Tania is so kind and rock lychee martinis out ! Highly recommend going for one of the omakase s choice and the ambiance is charming ! My favorite spot in the city !
Some of the tuna was great. I don’t think you get a good value for the money. Not enough variety on menu. Probably wouldn’t return.
Best sushi I’ve ever had. Can’t recommend enough!!
As usual we enjoyed our time at Macku. Love the owners and the service is great. Can’t wait to come back. Try the Nigiri pairs, Curry Udon, Carrot and Sweet Potato soups and all the specials!
In my opinion Chicago’s best sushi experience for authentic and hard to find fish!! Owner is amazing and helpful with beautiful presentations!!
Amazing experience. Best omakase by far.
Macku exceeded his usual stellar performance. The conversation at the Sushi Bar was great, the food even better.
Great sushi and unique seasonal dishes!
Used to be our favorite hidden sushi gem in Chicago, but seems like the quality has suffered a bit recently. Did the premium Omakase for the second time, which claims seasonal ingredients and changing menu, however it was almost the exact same as the Omakase we were served a year ago.
Still better than your average sushi spot but for the price, I’m not sure I could justify it again.
Top notch Japanese food at reasonable prices. Make sure you try the soup
The kitchen dishes were outstanding. It's difficult to improve on standard Japanese fare, but Macku does, with creative variations that are still very respectful of the original cuisine. And the sushi was out of this world, with fish so fresh and fine I'm ruined for my usual dive. I particularly enjoyed the nigiri pair experience, where one piece is the chef's own approach, while the second is presented traditionally for contrast.
Fantastic in every way.
Pricey but equally tasty.
beautiful & delicious evening 😊
The service was horrible. Really disappointed.
Amazingly delicious but definitely more than $$ - two people, two drinks and a few shared plates was over $150.
Superb authentic. Pricey
Excellent Sushi with wonderful service
Will definitely be back
An incredible Omakase experience. Loved each plated served.
Lots of off menu items and daily specials, regular menu is great but listen to your server for recommendations on being adventurous
The best sushi in Chicago. Went there on a Monday for the first time and was back that very Saturday. No gimmicky rolls. Just solid, fresh fish. This place is dangerously good. Already thinking about it again!
