One of the best, if not the best, Sushi restaurants in Chicago. Super high-end sashimi and nigiri.

A trendy sushi place. Had reservations at 815, we called ahead kf time to inform them we where running late due to traffic. Informed they had back to back reservations and would "accommodate as able to." When arrived we where informed they where running 30minutes behindand where still waiting to seat people with 8pm reservations. Would have appreciated being informed of that when we initially called. The chef's omakase menu. The dishes where for the most part excellent but we where never informed about when the courses had reached the $150 mark and being charged additional items beyond that initial price. This along with the earlier reservation fiasco really soured the experience, the restraunt really seems to avoid being very forthcoming to their customers. The sushi tastes great but the way an establishment carries itself and how it interacts with its customers can have a.major positive or negative impact. Still a place
worth checking out but take everything with a grain of salt and read the menu closely and carefully, don't expect the staff to point any caveats that may trip up customers.

I wish I could give a negative star to this restaurant. My friend was visiting from Philadelphia, and we were so excited for restaurant week. I made a reservation weeks ahead, and we still had to wait 45 minutes for our first course. When the first course came out, the server spilled an entire bowl of soup all over the table, all over my friend's clothes, and splattered all over my purse and jacket. At first, we were very understanding since mistakes can be made. Well, the server just gave us some wet wipes to clean our clothes but never offered or showed proactiveness to clean the table for us. Then he offered a free dessert... We started getting really frustrated because we couldn't believe that that was the best that they can do. So we asked to speak to the manager, and the manager (Tania) came by with very frustrated attitude, and said "We can give you a dessert and 10% discount. But that's all we can do. What else do you want us to do? Give you a free meal? We can't do that. It was a mistake." First off, we were not at all looking for a free meal as we were already planning to spend money for the restaurant week experience and drinks. But she had completely disregarded our plans for the evening (which was already delayed because of late service and we had a showing to go to, which we now had to rush through our meal). Then she acted as if we were being unreasonable for being frustrated at her attitude. We didn't finish the meal and ended up leaving, and our dinner plan was completely ruined. We will NEVER go back to this restaurant, and we wish that the restaurant wouldn't do this to any other customer, but I wouldn't be surprised if they continued offering this kind of rude service.

Good and service were very good. Restaurant week menu was a good variety and the restaurant week deal is great.

Would like to back and sit at the bar for for the sushi omakase deal on Thursday’s.

Macku is my favorite spot for omakase. Can’t recommend it enough! Chef Macku does excellent work. The drink pairings were great, and they have an amazing selection of Japanese whisky.

The flavors were striking and interesting. The menu was confusing. While I understand it is a high end Japanese, it would be a good idea to have a few traditional items.

We had omakase for $120, total 7 small dishes. Wine was separate. Total came about $190 per person.
Food was well presented and had adequate taste and flavor, however nothing spectacular, in other words quite overpriced in my opinion compared with other places serving omakase. The level of service was not on par with expectations for this price. Waiters were polite and helpful but knew almost nothing about wine which was not well matched with food. Sake portion was too large. Such a simple thing as a stand for chopsticks was not present. I would rate this place higher if it cost half of the price we paid.

If you intend on having a “normal” sushi dinner your in the wrong place. And oh wait they specialize in bourbons so don’t plan on a decent wine or cocktail. The waiter was as green as they come and “they really don’t have a bartender”. The food was good though pricey. If they just changed their name it would demenish expectations of ‘let’s do sushi tonight!’ There are 3 sushi items on menu😳‼️

Creative sushi with same sushi served in multiple waves of preparation. No need for soy sauce. And not a place for roll eaters.

Macku never ceases to impress. We usually go for the omakase dinner but due to current pregnancy we decided to try all the cooked items on his menu this time. They were all fantastic. The soups are all delicious and rich. The chawanmushi is one of the best I have ever had. The presentation for all the dishes that came out of the kitchen are just a beautiful as all the artful sushi we usually have and the quality of the ingredients likewise just as high. The service was great throughout the night. This is the first time we have not sat at the sushi bar and the servers were very attentive (especially with the amount of water I drink with this pregnancy, I was amazed that my glass was never empty). I can't wait to be able to eat raw fish again but in the mean time it's nice to know Macku really can do it all and there are plenty of other things to enjoy at our favorite Japanese spot in the city.

The service was horrible. The server talked down to us and made us feel like ordering the Macku omakase dinner was a cheap move- recommending strongly that we upgrade one level. That would have changed our intended $75 per person to $120 per person. We went with the 5 course Macku omakase dinner after all. Every dish was delicious, but... our dinner took 2 hours and 45 minutes. Much of it was waiting in between courses for food from the kitchen. At the end (even after a complimentary 6th course of SHARED dessert) we felt that we should have been full. They offered more drinks when our glasses were full and disappeared when our glasses were empty. Surely, I should have gotten to enjoy more than 2 glasses of sake in that amount of time. The 5 course dinner only had 4 pieces of nigeri. We expected a bit more sushi, let alone food for the meal that came to $250 with a couple drinks and tip. It was tasty, but pretty much an appetizer and the service was so bad, I would not go back.

If you haven't been to this place in over a year, please review the menu. It has changed and I fully expect them to get a Michelin recommendation or even possibly a star soon. However, this is not the same price range as before. The food was amazing. The menu is a little confusing. Also, while we do not mind spending a lot of money on dinner, we really were surprised by the cost. If we had ordered everything that we wanted and were full, I suspect the bill would have been over $300. The Japanese whiskey selection is one of the best in the city as far as I can tell. Their old fashions were some of the very best ever. Again, if you are prepared for the price, you will love it.

I've eaten here three times now, and it never disappoints. The chef even prepared a 6-course vegetarian meal for one of our guests. Everything was incredible! Chef Macku is extremely talented and this restaurant is a rare find, definitely get the 5 or 6-course special!

Definitely worth it and a super fun/unique food experience. I went with my boyfriend for date night - he LOVES sushi and I barely tolerate a California roll haha. We both did the OMAKASE, each a different level. So we both got to try a large variety! We both loved the soups, my favorite was their take on a taco it was so delicious and his was probably the sashimi. We both enjoyed getting to try things outside our comfort zones like cooked baby crabs, shell and all! We'll definitely be coming back!

This restaurant was truly awful. The food was either overly sweet or way too salty. The fish on the nigiri sushi was swallowed up in sauce - too bad the sauce couldn't completely mask how unfresh and ill-prepared the fish was. In fact, the fish was just outright disgusting. I have never had ootoro that made me gag before (honestly, how does that happen - ootoro is one of the fattiest and nonfishy cuts... It's not like I'm talking about mackerel). Each dish had no balance in flavor profile. It's almost like the chef had no concept of adding enough acidity.

Just do not go here. The price is extravagant for what you get. Even if the restaurant were cheap, I wouldn't go here. The food made me sick to my stomach. I felt seriously unwell. You're better off just getting a maki roll from places like whole foods (which obviously isn't high grade sushi, so that gives you an idea of how overpriced this restaurant is).

Their menu is very unique. Definitely suited toward a really special, amazing meal versus just ordinary (and more budget) sushi. Ingredients and preparations were incredibly unusual and delicious. Focus on sashimi and nigiri. We didn’t do omakase but I bet it’s fabulous. Whiskey assortments looked great. Not many vegetarian options but they were nice to accommodate and made some delicious veggie rolls for us. Will be our new go to for really good sushi or for bringing picky guests.
