MacKenzie's Chop House Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I always go to MacKenzie's for dates and anniversaries. Last night we decided to go for my birthday. Upon arriving we were greeted by a very nice smiling younger hostess who checked us in for our reservation and said it would be a few minutes because we were early. The older hostess next to her decided she needed to rudely clarify that it would be "closer to 730" which was when our reservation was, it was 708 and we got sat at 715 so her comment was not needed and was presented in a very rude manner. We got sat in the smallest booth ever which was extremely uncomfortable but that happens sometimes. Our waitress acted annoyed when she started her service for us and then was non existent the rest of the night. I normally love this place and brag about it to all my friends as being a reasonable place for an amazing steak with great service. Last night was not a representation of that restaurant.
Delicious French Onion soup served in cast iron skillet.... yummy home made garlic bread baked with garlic cloves in it. Lower star rating due to NY steak ordered medium & came medium well...also meal not hot & baked potato seemed warmed up & not fresh baked. We've always had wonderful meals here & were surprised - thinking food not brought out asap after cooked The manager took the steps off our bill which we appreciated since little of it was consumed/not enjoyed.
I'm a fan of MacKenzie's, but I think the receipt needs to be compared to menu prices before paying. This visit and the last had pricing discrepancies. Everything else is close to superb, other than when we are seated at a cocktail table for dinner. Not cool when the restaurant isn't close to full and we had a reservation .
We had a fantastic time! Highly recommend going on ‘wine lover’s Wednesday’ for excellent prices on wine - each bottle priced under $99 is half price.
Excellent food; the steak was cooked perfectly to order, the sides were delicious. This is a meal we will be pleasantly reminiscing about for a long time. I think I can easily say that MacKenzie’s is the best steakhouse in town!
This was my 3rd Thanksgiving dinner at MacKenzie's Chop House in the last 5 years. The first two times, the experience was impressive in everyway, but something went wrong this year. Before I begin, I want to say that the staff was very friendly and very attentive.
We were seated at a booth in a depressingly dark area of the restaurant and the seat was too low or the table too high which made eating awkward and uncomfortable. I imagine the lighting (or lack of it) was intended to be romantic, but I want to point out that it's hard to feel romantic or even very adult when the table/seat configuration makes you feel like a toddler, lol.
The real tragedy, however, was the food (which is usually insanely good). I opted for the turkey and my companions both opted for the steak. My turkey was completely hard and dry and my companions received drastically unequal portions of steak, the woman being served more than twice as much steak as the man...so odd! The buttermilk biscuits were hard (like when you put bread in the microwave) and the stuffing was unbelievably dry. The rest of the meal was okay with the exception of the butternut squash soup, which was honestly delicious.
We did not complain or send anything back because sometimes you just want to enjoy people's company and have a nice time regardless of the circumstances (especially when you're some place you cherish as a favorite go-to for special events).
In spite of this disappointing experience, I still consider MacKenzie's Chop House one of the best establishments in the city. I can only imagine that something went seriously wrong in the kitchen that day.
We go to Mackenzies a lot and this was our first Thanksgiving. It was very disappointing. The price was too high for what they served and my nieces salad had a small rock in it that hurt her tooth when she bit it. The turkey was so tuff in spots I couldn’t cut it. The manager did comp my nieces dinner but over all dissatisfied. Also you need to deep clean. The bathroom vent above the stalls were coated with dust and grime. For a high end restraunt and well known place for what you charge you should shine.
Our first visit here - Thanksgiving dinner. We were not impressed. Not the quality we’re accustomed to for a nice restaurant. Prime rib portions were skimpy. We were offered “seconds” at no charge. Overall not a good holiday experience. Setting is beautiful in the old historic Alamo Hotel.
Our server, Alison, was attentive to our needs without hovering, perfect for my husband and I's date night. The food was prepared to perfection, with larger portions than we'd anticipated. We've already sent a few friends to try out the rack of lamb and steaks.
Very friendly server and on top of service the whole meal. Didn't feel smothered nor abandoned. The food was great (shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were slightly overcooked, but still delicious and the cocktail sauce ... amazing). We had the rack of lamb and the rib-eye. Both were cooked perfectly and seasoned well.
We frequently dine here prior to Pikes Peak Theater performances. And the dinners have always been wonderful. But not so much on 8 Nov 17. We enjoyed the usually good service (thanks, Oscar), but that night the kitchen was really off. We asked that the salad be divided, and it was. But with no salad dressing. My wife's plate had been stacked on some other salad, so its dressing was coated on the bottom of her plate. Yum. And the entrees - prime rib and bison - were underwhelming. The only redeeming item was the wine. Come on, MacKenzie's. Your pedigree is better than that. Step up to your reputation. BTW, we'll continue to come back, but hoping dinner will be like we used to enjoy.
Their filet mignon is perfecct. Tender and melts in your mouth. Love the truffle frittes and enjoyed the mussel appetizer. The oysters were fresh with this great cucumber sauce that was unique and quite tasty. Only complaint was...shells pieces broken onto the oysters themselves, so when you ate one you at to pick shells out of your mouth. Oscar was a great, attentive server and enjoyed talking with the bartender before dinner.
I highly recommend MacKenzies!
Not nearly as good as the first time. Too dark in the fireplace room. Duck dish with meatballs tasted like ground turkey. Crime brûlée sugar top was burnt. A woman sent back her steak that was too rare and by the time her table of 6 was finished her steak came back. Very disappointing!
We look forward to the great steaks. The 8oz fillet is our go-to dinner. Cooked to perfection! We were disappointed when they stopped serving a veggie side with their meals, but the salads are great and a family style vegetable is perfect for four to share.
Wonderful dining experience was had at MacKenzie's Chop House on a Thursday evening before the Kris Kristofferson concert at Pikes Peak Center! From the ability to reserve a table on Open Table to their hostess seating us right on time, our dinner started out just right. Service was top-notch during the whole dinner from salads through entrees to dessert! The food was excellent, the bleu cheese cobb salad very tasty, seafood especially perfectly seasoned, temperature and portion size spot on. Will be back very soon to enjoy other menu items!
The service was not great. When one of us wanted a smaller cut of the pork chop, he was told it was not possible. A 12-oz pork chop is way too huge for one person. Also, we felt the wine was overpriced. The Argula salad had too much dressing on it. Very few options for vegetarians. I forgot my credit card that night. Seems like the wait staff would have noticed the card was left on the table prior to our departure? All-in-all, we probably won't be back.
