MacArthur Park - Palo Alto Ratings and Reviews
Our server David was very attentive and so funny. Bar servers were awesome. They kept my wife entertained until my son and I arrived to the restaurant, and then kept all of us happy until my brother and sister in law arrived. All of us had a different entree and each of us remarked how great our selections were. MacArthur Park was a real hot spot before the downturn in the economy, so we were surprised at the number of empty tables. But hey, check it out! The prices are lower now and very reasonable, and the specials? Wow!
Very impressed with every aspect of the restaurant, especially the valet attendant. He was very attentive, courteous and professional unlike other valet services. Your restaurant is doing it right! Appearance goes a long way. Thank you. Please share with the restaurant
It was the architecture that got me interested in trying this restaurant. I've been there several times in the fall and their indoor dining room is spacious and quiet. This last time, because it was a lovely August day, we sat outside. The service is great and the menu varied enough to satisfy my fellow guests, although I keep coming back to the porkchops.
I must admit, this used to be one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. I have been going to MacArthur Park for about 15 years. I brought 2 other people from San Jose to the restaurant on Saturday that had never been before. This was easily my worst experience ever dining there. I had 4 different servers throughout the course of my meal and none of them could get the drinks, food or bill correct in a timely manner. I actually watched one server bring our beers halfway to the table, leave them in the sun (15 feet away) for about 5 minutes (long enough to warm them up about 10 degrees) and then have another server bring them over (wrong beers, wrong people). The ribs are usually the hi-light of MP, but this time, they were very tough.
This restaurant is wonderfully located in what looks like an old mansion. The atmosphere is great and the homemade chips were spectacular (I couldn't stop nibbling on them!). For me, however, the food fell a little flat. I had the chicken and rib combo plate and was left a little disappointed - I've had better.
I used to go to the other MacArthur Park in San Francisco all the time and have missed their onion strings and fried calamari since they went out of business. It was great to get a taste of their food again. Always yummy and reliable and the salmon special with fresh corn salsa was perfectly cooked and delicious.
I have eaten at MacArthur Park many times, sometimes good, sometimes average. This time all items ordered where great, especially the clams and ribs. The wives had dinner salads of prawns and steak and they loved them as well. I mentioned that it was both our anniversaries, and then the waiter brought out small, but enough, pieces of Mudd Pie. The place was not busy, as it was early, but we were treated well and all had a great time.
The restaurant has kind of a cool ambience because it is a former Officer Club. The food was just average, not too exciting.
I ordered a roasted beet and gorgonzola salad (add chicken) It was very generic, the chicken was dry and tasteless.
My husband enjoyed the ribs and my daughter liked her mussels and clams. Dessert was awful, we ordered creme brule and the it tasted like soap!
They staff was very helpful in throwing a great anniversary dinner. They provided good suggestions on the table that was romantic and quiet. They set the flowers on the table at the right time. They came by often to check up on how the dinner was but did not intrude. All in all it was a great time.
This place went downhill over the years until no one was going there. Since changing either ownership and/or chef, the food is really good again. Unfortunately, that old reputation still clings and they are still not drawing well. One irritant is being stuck with valet parking. The other one was that I used Open Table to make a lunch reservation and they do not give points for lunch time reservations, only dinner.
The food and service were very good. Instead of bread, they start you off with housemade potato chips which are addictive. It's great for barbecue again. The baby back ribs were delicious. Someone else had the pork chops and raved. Another diner had the salmon and said it was quite good also.
Excellent ambiance, food, and service for important business meals/catered meetings. I've been there about twenty times.
It should be noted that you can see the restaurant from the road but it is difficult to get to. Entry to parking is tricky because the exit is on the left of the restaurant and the entry is off the street immediately to the right of the restaurant. The entry street at first looks like a one-way street going the wrong way with a median and a second one-way going the right way. However, the first one-way street is two-way and the second street is actually an authorized-entry-only street.
Went with my family for Father's day BBQ Brunch. The food was OK. There were several BBQ dishes, salmon, chicken, ribs, and prime rib. The chicken was OK. The rest except prime rib seem to have the same Hoisin flavor. I didn't get to try the prime rib myself but my dad said it was pretty good. The service was really good. For special occasion, tables were put too close together making it difficult for people to walk around. I recommend going a little early, as when we were about to leave, the place got really crowded, and I can see some problem on the buffet table. The coffee creme brule was great - my favorite for the day. The rest of dessert was all right. Overall it was OK, worth an experience but nothing to write home about.
Great open summer atmosphere. Unfortunately, not too many waiters were working so service was thin but still adequate. Though my guests liked their entrees, I did not like the taste of mine at all. Still, MP is very comfortable and the prices are quite reasonable.
This was our first visit, for my daughter's 25th birthday dinner. We were delighted with the ambiance, the food was excellent, service prompt. Would most definitely go there again. We ate inside and seating was great...not cramped. The only slightly negative aspect was the live pianist was too loud; we found ourselves having to really talk loud to be heard, and we were only a party of 4 at a small table. Although the music selection was very nice, it was a relief when he took a break.
I had never been to MacArthur's Park in Palo Alto and it was a lovely surprise. The restaurant interior is clubby and charming. We ate outdoors on their beautiful shady patio. The food was wonderful, the portions perfect and they offer crisp home-made potatoe chips in lieu of bread baskets. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone for lunch or dinner, business or pleasure. With complimentary valet parking included, this is a great find.
We came here for lunch to celebrate my son's graduation from high school. Service was a bit slow, though there were not many diners at 1 PM on a Friday. The complimentary, crispy potato chips were a nice surprise, but needed a bit more salt. After waiting a while, beverages were finally served. The mimosa was very nice. The crayons and paper placemats made for creativity and conversation during lunch.
I had the hangar steak salad, and the best part were the tasty golden potatoes that accompanied the dish. The meat was a little chewy and lacked flavor. For dessert, the dual creme brulee was quite good, especially the coffee flavored dish. It would have been nice to have a little acknowledgement by the waiter or maitre d for the occassion
I love MacArthur Park. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is comfortable but upscale, and the service is great. I also appreciate that it is not too loud - it is a place you can meet friends and hear each other talk, which is rare these days. I think part of the secret is that they do not crowd too many tables into the space. I highly recommend MacArthur Park.
