A restaurant embracing the history of Detroit's industrial reach. The cinder block building that housed neighborhood fare for decades has received new life to further the tradition of hand-made, thought-out food and beverage.
Expect personal service, handwritten menus, and a fresh, comfortable atmosphere. Food and beverage selections rotate with the seasons and availability of local farm products, with no set menu. Everything is handmade from scratch, with fresh, ethical ingredients from Chef Rigato’s extensive network of farms, butchers and foragers.
Experienced an amazing dinner this evening. Chef James and his staff fed us well. One ode the very best in Detroit hands down.
Great food. We went with the tasting menu, which includes a couple of specials not on the main menu
We had a wonderful experience and look forward to returning, perhaps more regularly. We each enjoyed the tasting menu, which was expertly crafted. My favorite dish was the mushroom arrabiata and my husbands was the lamb. Whether you do the tasting or order a la carte, be certain to save room for desert! Service was impeccable and the cohesion and coordination of the entire staff was evident.
Thank you all for a wonderful 4th anniversary celebration. We will be back.
The food was great and the drink pairing worked perfectly with the courses. Highly recommended if you enjoy new and different foods. The food was prepared perfectly. Lamb chop and shrimp dumpling was awesome. Don't get me wrong every course was amazing those just stood out. The drink pairings were well thought out and i would recommend it. Service was good and the wait staff is very knowledgeable. Only glitch was when they brought our first course wine and we had not received our pre dinner drinks yet. When we mentioned it we were told “ well i did not want your first course to come out without your drink pairing.” They are busy and at times it felt like an assembly line. We did receive our pre dinner drinks when the first course arrived. I order the chefs surprise and it was amazing. Paul made it and the only kind of input I gave him was rye or bourbon whiskey.
This is a complete food experience. We had the chefs tasting menu with drink pairings. It was unbelievable. Every course, including the pallet cleanser(parsley granita) was perfectly plated and tasted even better.
In the words of my husband, ‘Best meal ever’! We are hooked and will be back...hopefully soon.
Such great service! I would definitely recommend the tasting menu and drink pairings.
The food was AWESOME!! Really enjoyed it...and will be back again! 😋
Amazing experience as always. Food is incredible, tasting menu and wine pairing is a great choice, lots of variety and amazing wines. The steak is a must have. Service is outstanding and the meal experience is very customizable. Will be back many times as this place is consistently excellent.
Awesome experience. I will be going back.
Since April, I have visited about a half dozen times and each time I am on the way in, I think “How can this meal be better than the last one I had here?”....but it always is. Each experience is better than the last. The food is incredible. The service is spectacular with all the servers I’ve had being aware of everything going on with the table and menu they are serving that night. This is the best restaurant I have been to in Michigan.
I took my 15 year old son and my boyfriend to dinner at Mabel Gray. We all three enjoyed the tasting menu which consisted of 8 courses! Every single course, my son declared it was his favorite and the best thing he'd ever eaten. The main course was a lambchop sourced from Colorado. Lamb chops are my favorite, and this lamb chop was the best I'd ever tasted. The meat melted in my mouth it was so tender and perfectly seasoned. If you haven't eaten at Mabel Gray, you simply must.
Great food, great service, good value, decor could use upgrading, location not the best.
Love coming here! Will be back in Sept!
Loved it! We had the 8 course tasting menu and each course was small enough to have 8 of them and each was a delight of many flavors and seasoning. The service was excellent with 11 staff for maybe 12 tables. They need a bigger place😊
We love Mable!! Best restaurant in Michigan... and we’ve tried many, including all the new dining scene downtown the past 5 years. James is the best chef around. Talented and creative. Don’t even read the menu... go for the tasting. We’ve been maybe a dozen times in 4 years and never picked anything else. Never ever disappointed! Definitely fine dining in a contemporary and cool ambiance.
I liked the food but my wife had problems with many of the items on the tasting menu being highly spicy. My recommendation would be to to tone down sone of the items to accommodate diverse palates
Always special, never a disappointment. Maybe small complaint, deserts too big, could have a $10 price point on a glass of wine.
Another wonderful night at Mabel Gray.
Phenomenal dining experience.
Booked a couple of months in advance, but totally worth it! Took advantage of the tasting menu with wine pairing. Each one of the eight courses was on point - from oysters to octopus to ahi tuna to bison. Aolis accompanying many of the dishes were amazing. And service...Mark was terrific!
The food was fantastic and everything had impeccable taste and presentation. Mark Antoni (sorry if I’m spelling it wrong) was a very engaging and passionate waiter who was very well-informed on all parts of the tasting menu.
Mark Anthony was a wonderful waiter. The food was superb. All 5 did the tasting menu and 3 did the wine pairing. We were very happy with the meal.
Dining at Mabel Gray is an experience not merely a meal. The food is eclectic yet approachable. The service is amazing with a knowledgeable staff that can help you with the ever-changing menu and well aligned drink options. The bartending talent is worth the trip.
Some of my most memorable meals have been experienced here.
I included photos but don’t show up expecting to order the dish someone else told you they had some time ago. The menu is not static and that is part of the fun
We had an exceptional experience last Saturday. Was great food and great service. We will be back!!
Great food! Absolutely delicious! And, our server Mark Anthony was great too!!
As always, the chefs tasting was great. We weren’t expecting 3 straight courses of lamb (our least favorite meat) but we were blown away by how
Much each of enjoyed it and how chef changed all of our opinions on lamb.
Amazing food and excellent service. Best restaurant in the Detroit area by far!!!
So loved it. Get the tasting menu! It’s the bomb!
10 yr anniversary dinner celebration at my
Favorite restaurant in Michigan!
Always get the chef tasting. Excellent! Service, Excellent! Can’t wait to go back
A wonderful experience everyone should try. Do the tasting menu and sit back for an incredible meal with over the top service. Lovely way to spend my birthday dinner.
Our reservation time was not honored and we had to wait 40 minutes, but the staff provided complimentary drinks and appetizers to make up for it, and we had a great time.
Excellent food, just had the worst table in the restaurant... 😬
Always wonderful, still my favorite restaurant!
Everything was amazing, we can’t wait to go again!
The tasting menu was amazing. Service was impeccable. If I plan ahead next time I might be able to get in after 4 o’clock.
I wanted to love this restaurant. Me and my husband had the tasting menu and my daughter ordered the burger and truffle fries. Out of 8 courses, one was hot, the lamb. It was delicious. Not sure if the rabbit and polenta was supposed to be hot, it was luke warm, bad. I was also disappointed in the one note throughout, pickled something on almost every dish. Even the desert was disappointing, bitter chocolate. Thank goodness for my daughters truffle fries, too bad it cost an extra $5 for the dipping sauce they came with. Because there was no oil on the fries or maybe the fries were cold before added, all the salt and truffle fell off, nothing adhered to the fries. $187 for the meal and a $30 tip, I won't be back. Beyond disappointed. I question this James Beard nomination. This restaurant was all hype.
Loved the experience here. We did the chef's meal and drink pairings. Everything was great! However, it was definitely pricey. Saving this for a special occasion next time!
Max was extremely attentive and made our overall experience even better!! Food and drinks were outstanding.
This was our first time at a restaurant considered "foodie heaven." We tried the tasting menu -- many courses that were first time for us....Smoked yogurt! who knew it could be so amazing! My only gripes are two: the sound level was deafening. It was difficult for 4 people to hold a conversation. Second, I wish that we could have taken away a list of the menu items. The ala carte menu was printed, but the server was the only person at our table privy to what the courses were. I would have enjoyed taking home a description of that $65 meal!
Love everything about this place! Flawless service, outstanding food, interesting and unexpected menu items, lovely decor! I felt very lucky to have gotten a reservation!
