A restaurant embracing the history of Detroit's industrial reach. The cinder block building that housed neighborhood fare for decades has received new life to further the tradition of hand-made, thought-out food and beverage.
Expect personal service, handwritten menus, and a fresh, comfortable atmosphere. Food and beverage selections rotate with the seasons and availability of local farm products, with no set menu. Everything is handmade from scratch, with fresh, ethical ingredients from Chef Rigato’s extensive network of farms, butchers and foragers.
One of the best restaurants in the Detroit area. Tasting menu was amazing with great wine pairings!
My favorite restaurant in metro Detroit. Superb food, always choose the tasting menu and have not had a disappointing dish. You will not find better service anywhere and the staff is genuine.
Awesome food and service
The food was absolutely wonderful..the bar is a different story. Unsure why they do not stock the usual selections of liquor. The vodka I ordered had a funny smell and I woke up with a headache.
Awesome food and drink. Our waiter Max was one of the best. Recommend the tasting menu and beverage pairings. Good restaurant for special occasion. Tasting menu is 8 courses. Plan on at least an hour and a half. Very memorable experience. Highly recommend!!
An amazing dinner! Molly was awesome explaining our tasting menu and beverage pairing. Thank you!!
Amazing tasting menu, great service
We have been to Mabel Gray three times so far and it is always great. The tasting menu is very affordable and allows you to get a taste of a lot of the items on the meu. Would highly recommend!!!!
This establishment is hand down the best! Everything from the food to the service is absolutely top notch. Can’t wait to go back!
Great dining experience! Service was amazing. We enjoyed the tasting and wine pairing. Lamb chops were exceptional.
Service was excellent, food was incredible, atmosphere was very cool. Only negative—it was a little too loud for conversations. We still had them, we just had to lean across the table and speak up. Everything else was perfect.
Excellent service and food is delicious. We have done the tasting menu twice and really enjoyed it!!! Some dishes were amazing and some very good. One dish was a tad salty but overall an awesome experience.
As good as its sterling reputation. All 3 in our party got the tasting menu with the wine pairings and it was wonderful. The wait staff is faultless, informative and on top of the needs of the table. The food is top notch, as good as it gets...wonderful flavors and very innovative. The best restaurant in metro Detroit.
This was our first time at Mabel Gray and our expectations were surpassed. The food is inventive but not overly precious. And the service is spot on. The servers provided just the right amount of information about each dish and were always there just when you needed them. We did the tasting menu with beverage pairing and felt that it was a very good value for the quantity and quality. This was definitely one of our favorite dining experiences of 2019.
Fabulous experience in every regard! Tasting menu highly recommended! Consideration given to dietary restrictions went WAY beyond “accommodating”; Max made it his mission to help provide a standout experience for our whole party (note that the entire staff was great!). Best food, great choices for accompanying music, terrific service! Stop reading this and make reservations ASAP!
Very friendly and attentive staff , unpretentious ambience, a surprise with every dish. Great experience! Definitely will come back !!
Amazing food and great service! We will be back.
An amazing dining experience! I'd definitely recommend doing the tasting menu. The service was fantastic and the waiter was very knowledgeable about where all the produce came from.
Mabel gray is an outstanding place to go eat for all the occasions. With its amazing environment and upbeat staff! always making it the best experience every time. Every one should experience there outstanding tasting menu at least once in there life. Taking some ordinary foods and turning them into to most exquisite combinations I have ever seen nor tasted absolutely outstanding and looking forward to my next reservation!!
This is my third visit. The first two were earlier seatings and the ambiance was superb. This time, 8:30 seating on Saturday night, was disturbing. There was a table of 4 near the door who were literally shouting/screaming. Not speaking loudly, SHOUTING their conversation. Two guys and two girls. For god's sake, tone it down you're making everyone sick.
My party of four could not enjoy the fine meal because of this lunacy. Perhaps they were drinking preparatory to coming for dinner but they were very out of line. Rude obnoxious behavior. My glaring didn't seem to send the signal.
Much as I love the food, that ruined the experience. I won't return for anything but an early seating, if I can get it.
Sorry if this sounds too critical.
Best meal we’ve had in 2019. Max is awesome!
Everything was PERFECT
AMAZING! Everything from the food to the service is amazing. Highly recommend the tasting menu with beverage pairing.
I genuinely love this place. The staff is knowledgeable and courteous and the food is always spectacular. Every time I attend I entrust my palate to Chef Rigato and I have yet to be disappointed.
Thanks to my loyalty to the ever changing chef’s tasting menu, Items arrive on my plate that I typically wouldn’t even consider ordering; time after time I gleefully finish everything that makes it to the table.
I recommend this restaurant to everyone I run across. Consider this review my personal recommendation to you. Please go. The only thing you’ll regret is not having done so sooner.
I’ve been a number of times, but somehow the service and food seemed even better than usual. Every single course on the Chef’s tasting menu was superb!
Pretty disappointed. My father and I had a 5 o’clock reservation. I ordered the tasting menu and my father ordered the American wagyu steak. The timing of the service was way off. The steak was meant to allow 45 minutes for service, yet my ‘entree’ course followed a good 10 minutes later. I think it’s unacceptable that 2 diners should sit without both having their entrees together. The server came over with an explanation about octopus taking long, but I find trite excuses to be insulting to a guest. Apologize, yes, maybe even something gratis, but an excuse does me no good. My entree was a few small pieces of venison and some sautéed mushrooms, it really shouldn’t have held the kitchen up. Instead, my father ate, finished, I got my plate, and it took me 2.5 minutes to finish. Felt awkward.
For the price, the tasting was a good value. The steak cost 100$. However, the tasting choices were fairly boring- toast with cheese, Brussels sprouts in a Tom Yum flavored sauce with a grilled shrimp, the ubiquitous octopus with chunky sauce, a latke with salmon, soup, and the venison, which was overloaded with whole seeds and spices. I felt bad that the shrimp wasn’t deveined- I know this detracts from the aesthetic, but it’s difficult to peel and the digestive tract is there to gross you out. The flavors were adequate, nothing outstanding in flavor or concept.
The dessert had a very odd texture. It was a white chocolate tart, but the filling didn’t melt on your tongue but kind of hung out there like a soft taffy until you pressed on it. Like mochi? It was off-putting. And the frosting on top tasted exactly like toothpaste. Not fun or satisfying.
But, I think the worst part was having to listen to John Cougar Mellencamp for the 2 hours of our visit.
I had been meaning to try Mabel Gray for a long time now. I assumed it represented the top of the game in Detroit. Yet, I think Detroit has a very, very long way to go. Doesn’t give me hope for the rest of the scene.
Mabel gray exceeds my expectations every time I go! The food was great the service is great the staff are well educated about the food and drinks they are serving. Everything is locally sourced. one of the best places I’ve eaten all year for a great price as well. I Will definitely be anticipating my return.
Consistently one of the best dinner experiences I’ve ever had. Creative delicious food and drinks with excellent knowledgeable servers.
Incredible food, a fantastic wait staff, and amazing drinks. The tasting menu was superb. Come hungry.
Spectacular food and service every time!
Lived up to the hype !
Wonderful! Tasting menu with drink pairing is awesome!!
We had a fantastic meal at Mabel Gray. Crab dumplings latkes and a fried whole red snapper. The service was as good as the food, thanks to Brock who waited our table.
Max was such an amazing server and made our experience there so much more enjoyable. Mabel Gray is truly a hidden gem in Hazel Park.
Great food, service and setting
Great service by our waiter Mark and the rest of the staff.
Chefs choice menu was outstanding.
Incredible dining experience! The food and service deserve the highest rating (and then some). I recommend the tasting menu, I really didn’t want it to end.
Our meal was phenomenal and the service was outstanding! Shared 4 plates with a friend and both of us were beyond full and happy when we left.
FABULOUS!! The food is creative and always DELICIOUS. I had the tasting and pairing menu, which never fails to impress. I always enjoy that but will probably not do the pairing next time as I don’t enjoy all of the drinks. My husband ordered off the menu and was equally impressed with the food.
The service is perfect. Fun, informative, attentive but not stifling. Mark Anthony was our sever ( fabulous) and Pailjna, the sommelier was FANTASTIC! She listened to us and really understood what we were looking for in wine.
We would love if Mabel Gray would do a wine event!!
I highly recommend Mabel Gray (unless you are taking the reservation we want)!
