Contemporary European
Enjoy international flavours in very British surroundings at Lytton’s restaurant at the glorious Letchworth Hall Hotel. A country retreat set in acre upon acre of glorious gardens, Letchworth Hall Hotel, part of the Mercure chain, is beautifully appointed throughout, but it’s on entering the Lytton’s dining room and bar that you’ll really appreciate the history of this Jacobean landmark. In the bar, you’re surrounded by deep, dark wood, narrow beams and cosy corners while through in the dining room is a light, bright colour scheme allowing arched doorways and wall sconces, leaded windows and chandeliers to take centre stage. Service at Lytton’s is of the unobtrusive, efficient style that one expects in a hotel dining room but with friendliness and warmth. Combining traditional and contemporary British food with modern European flavours, all presented with a little flourish and a touch of flair, Lytton’s menu offers something for everybody.

FOOD QUALITY IS INVARIABLY DISAPPOINTING AT THE RESTAURANT AND WE ONLY CONTINUE TO GO THERE BECAUSE OF THE GREAT SURROUNDINGS AND AMBIANCE. IT IS OVER 45 YEARS THAT I HAVE FREQUENTED THE RESTAURANT AND IT IS FAIR TO SAY THAT THE MEAL NOWADAYS IS BUT A POOR REFLECTION ON MY EARLIER EXPERIENCES AT THE HOTEL. TIMES CHANGE AND NOT ALWAYS FOR THE BETTER! A GREAT PITY.

It was OK. My wife's mother got pork tenderloin which had been overcooked to the point that it was a bit tough. Service was also a bit slow.

They do not serve dinner after 2.30 pm and then not again untill 6.30 pm , you can only get the bar menu between these times. I was not made aware of this when i booked a table for four for 4.30 pm. The bar menue consists of the normal stuff that most pubs ect would serve up, burgers, salads, etc but not what i was hoping for. Also, it is the first time in my life that our bill was brought to the table before , 1, the table was even cleared and 2, before we had even been asked if there was anything else we wanted. Quite strange.

Table for three consisted of two small round tables put together making the third person feel out of the engagement. Brought to the attention of staff member when shown the table and with few people within the restaurant this could have enabled a quick remedy. Met with a shrug when brought to the attention of this particular staff member, although other staff members were helpful during the evening. No real provision for wheelchair users. Had to go outside the hotel to enter the restaurant through conservatory with no ramp provision, having to struggle over threshold of fire door.

Three of us dined and two had the chef specials - one fish and one chicken. Both these were really good and the third person in the party had the pork which was also very good. Food was presented very well on the plate and chicken was beautifully tender not dry. We all had a dessert too and these were also delicious. The prices are quite expensive but as we had a tastecard the bill was very reasonable. My only complaint is that booking was very difficult as no-one answered the phone on the many occasions I attempted to call. I eventually booked online instead.

I went with a friend for afternoon tea. I had requested pastries rather than cakes and we were provided with those. It was very busy that afternoon but the staff kept us informed and anyway we were in no hurry. The prosecco was great as was the Earl Grey tea and coffee. The sandwiches were good and the selection of types. Plenty of good cream and jam. Whilst the scones were warm and fresh I did find them a bit stodgy and a little bland like they were missing something. We both ate the scones. Of course neither of us could eat all the pastries but we provided with a box and I took them home and my husband who ate all of them. I will be going again as I have already booked another afternoon tea for the 29th of April.

You cannot fault the service and the food in this restaurant. I have been many times before. I purchased a voucher from travelzoo for two course lunch with tea and chocolates. The service was very good and the food was excellent. I would recommend this to anyone. I shall go again shortly as I have vouchers for afternoon tea.

As the hotel is part of a large company group, I did not expect any more than a reasonable lunch in a reasonable restaurant. However, the hotel is charming and the restaurant has been cleverly incorporated into the old building, to give an 'up market' feel. The food was imaginative and well presented, and the staff were attentive without being intrusive.

The waiter was very attentive and pleasant. The food was excellent, especially the smoked salmon starter. Main Course (haddock) was very good, although the portions of haddock were extremely small. Ambience excellent. A bit on the expensive side for a mid week lunch.

We enjoyed our dinner at Lytton’s, which was good but not sensational. Reasonable variety on menu, and all dishes were tasty and well presented, though not that large in portion size. My girlfriend had the squash soup (we were told that all the soups were vegan, which was good, as my girlfriend doesn’t eat cream, often ruling soup out), and then the mushroom risotto. I had chicken supreme as main. We didn’t have dessert. Wine list was nothing special, and quite pricy given the quality. There were no prices on the menu, though on enquiry it was £22.95 for 2 courses, and £30 for 3.

We waited in the lobby area for a drink before dinner but in the end we had to go to the bar ourselves to ask a reluctant barman for a drink. There were very few vegetarian options on the dinner menu (which had no price printed on it) so had to ask for the a la carte menu---eventually we found some suitable dishes. They were just ok - the spicy pasta tasted mainly of tobasco, rather synthetic- my steak was quite good. No ambience - the dining room is a long hallway in bland colours. Only one other diner all evening - not the fault of the hotel but provided zero ambience! Overall, lacklustre service, no attention in the foyer seating area, and we felt rather unwelcome.

I booked afternoon tea on-line, I was surprised I could book afternoon tea at 12.15pm, but the system allowed this. In the comments I entered my sandwich preference. When I arrived, I was told by the waitress that my booking was for lunch & that afternoon tea was not served until 3pm. I explained that the system had allowed me to book, I was told well we are going to have to set a table for you. This consisted of getting out 2 cups, saucers & cutlery, they were very quiet so no real hardship. When the afternoon tea arrived, a different waitress said, no chicken or Egg sandwiches as requested. So the hotel knew in advance that I'd booked afternoon tea, they could have phoned to say I had to rebook for after 3pm, but they had decided to accept the booking. The first waitress did not need to mention it as though they were putting themselves out & I'd done something wrong. This was quite annoying as it was a treat for my mum's birthday. That aside the afternoon tea was lovely & the waitress gave us a box to take away the uneaten cakes. I had a 2 for 1 voucher, so great value. I would not pay £24 p/h as I believe you could probably find a better deal else where (which would include fizz).

Booked for Mothers Day however when we arrived we were seated in an area that can only be described as a lounge area with low sofas and coffee tables. We expected proper tables with tablecloths etc but assume due to Mother's Day there had been overbookings and the lounge area was being utilised. The lady who greeted us was very rude and offish about our booking and the fact the tables weren't appropriate. We didn't stay due to the appaulling attitude of this lady and the greed of the hotel to overbook.

We visited Lyttons for a Mothers Day celebration and initially I found the staff to be attentive, amusing and helpful. My difficult Mum requested honey for her melon starter (don't ask) and a sauce for her salmon. A very nice hollandaise sauce was served up in no time. Top marks. But as we were one of the last tables to get our meal the staff seemed to forget about us. By the time we were having desserts and coffee staff around us were more concerned about their evening settings than their existing customers. It also took ages for anyone to assist us with paying our bill. I would've made more of a fuss about this but my partner (also a Mum) clearly didn't want me to complain so I thought I'd wait for the review to voice my concerns. Overall the meal was good and very good value-for-money but the service went from 'great' to 'non-existent' in a couple of hours.

We had afternoon tea for my mums 60th birthday. It was lovely. The tea was replenished free of charge and there was a large choice of cakes and sandwiches. The staff were really excellent despite the restaurant being busy. My only critisism would be the pastry on the fruit tarts was soggy and under cooked and the fillings in the sandwiches were very very thin. It could have been made much more luxurious with deeper fillings.

Out in the middle of nowhere (in Letchworth) at a business hotel. They do 2 courses for £15 most days it seems. This is silver service and a bit quaint, with a waiter, whom is very nice, but would not be out of place in 'faulty towers'. He was however efficient and polite. The dining room is part of the original hall of the 'Letchworth Hall', and it reeks of days gone by splendour. The clientele are mainly business men and women, on courses or here for meetings etc. Having said that, this is our second visit and we would come again when in the area. The food was good, we both had the ham hock starter - very tasty. I had the lamb medallions for mains, whilst my wife had another dish, and we found both were served hot, well presented and enjoyable. There was no hurry to leave and we stayed and enjoyed the armchairs in a lounge area whilst having coffee. Very laid back and relaxing, whilst reading the freely provided paper.

Pleasant surroundings, and the maitre d' was professional and friendly. The food was good, despite slightly overcooked steak! They offered to change the steak for one cooked more to my liking, which was the right response. However, I was pretty happy with the one I had, good flavour and tender. Very generous portion sizes. The only downside to our evening was not the fault of the restaurant- a lot of ugly noises from a football mad crowd in the lounge outside the restaurant rather spoilt an otherwise quiet and refined evening! Hence my lower score for ambience!
