What Insiders Are Saying
Lupa is an ideal spot for that early-in-the-week dinner in Greenwich Village that you sort of want to cancel but can’t.
The food is excellent. However, our service was not. We did not receive the complimentary appetizer as the other guests did. We were not told the specials by our waitress and our pasta took an hour to arrive. I’ve been here before and have not had better experiences. Perhaps the private party in the back was causing a delay, not sure.
The server was very pushy. Hurrying us to make decisions. Insisted we order all courses at once, then the courses came too quickly and plates were plonked down on the table. No grace or finesse.
The Gnocchi was TERRIBLE. It was like rocks on a plate. The marinara sauce tasted like out of a can of Chef Boyardee. I have had this fish in the past at Lupa and it was exquisite. WHAT HAD HAPPENED ???? The burrata and Saltimbocca were delicious.
The entire meal was spoiled by the staff pushing us to finish and leave.
We will think long and hard before returning to Lupa.
Our dinner at Lupa did not disappoint in any way. Our server was fantastic and gave us good advice on what to eat and choices for wine. The scallop crudo was so fresh and sweet! The spaghetti carbonara was the best I have ever had - the speck is made in house and added so much to the dish. We had the lamb that night and it was cooked to perfection and was a great main course. If we lived in NY we would go there often.
Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Amazing food, great wine. Nice ambience for either a date, special occasion, work dinner, or casual night out with friends.
As usual the food was amazing. The service is always top notch. I could eat here everyday!
It’s hard to give an overall rating because there is such a disparity between the highs and lows. The food was overall excellent, and each of our pasta dishes was superb. The special of the day - the lamb shoulder - was the highlight of the night. The problem with our night was largely circumstantial but still might speak to an operational problem with this restaurant. We made a reservation for 10 PM on a Saturday night, and despite this being the most crowded night for most restaurants, it was very disappointing to wait 35 more minutes before being seated. After asking for help from the sommelier to choose a wine, and waiting perhaps a bit too long for his help, we didn’t taste our first bite of food until 11:15. I understand just how badly a kitchen can get backed up and sympathize for the situation, so we weren’t too bothered. But what didn’t sit right with us was at the end of our meal (which ended past 12:30), we were being pretty obviously rushed to leave despite us not being finished with our not-cheap wine and dessert. Again, we understand that staff need to get home and we didn’t want to delay them from ending their day, but this seemed exceptionally inconsiderate since we had waited so long to eat. This restaurant is reasonably priced for its food, but Lupa should keep in mind that hundreds of dollars in one night is a luxury that not many can afford, and should treat each experience accordingly, and not just another Saturday night to turn tables.
My only complaint is the music. It’s a beautiful Italian restaurant, there should be beautiful Italian music playing, not today’s hits.
Our waitress Indira was excellent. She made our experience very enjoyable
I have recommended Lupa to several people in the past but would no longer do so. This recent experience was intolerable. Service was poor, we were seated in the back room and the traffic (staff - waiters, kitchen staff and I think cleaning staff) provided us with a constant stream of noise and confusion. At times, there were 4-5 staff members in this small back room. And, the two bathrooms were nearby, one had a broken lock on the door and the commotion over that and the repair of the lock was another source of irritation.
Sadly, we will no longer be dining at Lupa.
We have been going to Lupa for years but haven't been there in a while. Sadly I was a bit disappointed. The serving staff is knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. The atmosphere and noise level are very pleasant in the middle of a weekend afternoon, the best time to come. But the food didn't overwhelm. The escarole pieces in the salad were too big, and the dressing too acidic. The chicken liver crostini was low on chicken liver; sardine appetizer was good; branzino was nice, but whatever was under the filets was supposed to potatoes and something else, but I couldn't really tell except that it was bland and mushy; wine pours are generous, however. All told, I would try again, because it really was one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. I hope it still can be.
Absolutely amazing! We have been coming to Lupa for over ten years and are never disappointed. Each and every time we have lunch or dinner at Lupa we leave saying that it was the best meal ever and the wine list is awesome! Thank you so much, cannot wait to visit again!
The food was fantastic. Service was excellent and sommelier recommended a great wine to go with our meal. Will definitely be back in the near future.
The seasonal pasta was very underwhelming. It was basically a flavorless bowl of spaghetti with ramps in it. Not great, but I'd like to go back to try something different. The restaurant didn't live up to the hype or the rating.
Despite the noise and crowd that greeted us when we arrived, the host got us to a great table on the front terrace -- couldn't have been nicer for my daughter's birthday. The food was terrific, the servers friendly, and after 8:30 PM the crowd thinned and the atmosphere became calmer. Lupa is as solid as ever, though I would probably come very early or relatively late to avoid the walk-in crush. Don't pass up that classic fried artichoke. I appreciate how the staff ensured that our birthday dinner would be a special one. It was a good night.
Food ambience and service is always great
We had the steak .. excellent
I LOVED everything about this evening. Second time dining here and have added it to my favorites...cool downtown vibe, cozy room, FANTASTIC food...priced appropriately. Thumbs up!!
Great food. Done perfectly. As good as the best in Zitsly!
Excellent, as always. And one of the best values for Italian food in the city. Overpriced wine: stick to the house offerings.
Amazing pasta & great service. Definitely pricey but worth it.
Service was EXCELLENT
We just found our new favorite restaurant. Better late than never. Everything is perfect. Cannot wait to come back.
If you love Italian cooking, Lupa will surely delight you. Not only the selection is great, each dish brings out the best of the delicate flavors. We opted for the tasting menu. The artichoke and lemon, the buttery black pepper, pork fat coating different dishes just right...
Service was top notch and attentive. Wine list is extensive, whether you'd like to indulge or stay on a budget.
A great stop. Definitely recommend it to others. PS: Leave room for at least the desert wine with sorbetto, if not for more...
We try to get to NYC once a year. Lupa is our "go to" restaurant--we always must go! We have settled on our favorite meal--we share an escarole salad, cacio e pepe, and saltimbocca. We each have a glass of their Vespa Red wine. The meal is truly divine.
FABLULOUS, as always! wish i had known about the lunch deal sooner...
Music was toooooo loud and not suitable at all to the atmosphere
We could only get a table in the small Backyard room, but that was ok
Linguine con Vongole was perfect.
Pollo al Diavolo was burned too much, so that it hurt me almost the whole night. I think, that the oil war overheaten.
beets and cheese platter was exceptional carbonora was delicious
Lupa on a Sunday has been a long time tradition when visiting from San Francisco. Cabonara- and pork dish are incredible!
Unfortunately we were sat in the back room and it was really disappointing. It defeats the whole purpose of going to a nice, fun and trendy place like Lupa. Our table was against the wall in a corner, the room is small and tables CFA led and too close to each other so waiters keep bumping into your chair, it is quiet and def not a fun place to go on a Saturday night. Food and service was excellent but again, we could have the same little, bad table in any other restaurant. It is also about the experience for us, not just food and a name.
Fantastic meal, awesome service and great ambiance
As always, consistent quality at mid-level prices. Meal was very tasty and wait staff were extremely pleasant.
Everything was very good!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely go back. The bartenders were great and the wait staff were helpful, friendly, and courteous. The food was DELICIOUS!
Very loud but we got sat at the back room which was more quiet - and preferred for dinner with older parents. Food was great and service was attentive.
Second time here... Fantastic food and service, we'll definitely be back!
Excellent and expensive
the food is, as always, great. the service this time was lacking. our server was quite preoccupied with other things. the attention and info she gave us was poor. we would surely return, but ask for another server. by the way, this is the first time we have encountered this. i think has been a large turnover in staff .
Always good, classic Italian in a crowded, fun setting. Service was a bit uneven in comparison to usual visits. Impressed that the owner was unobtrusively present observing operations and guest satisfaction while standing near entry.
Food pasta n branzino excellent as always. Sit in front or bar .
