While this restaurant was not the authentic French cuisine we were expecting, this was one of the best dinners my husband and I have had in the area. We did the tasting menu and were blown away by the quality, detail, presentation, taste, and portion size of our courses. We were stuffed by the 4th course, but couldn't stop because each course was incredible. The chef was also very accommodating of my food allergy and put together an amazing substitute. The ambiance was very quiet, simple, comfortable and casual. This is our new special occasion restaurant and we will be back!
Very disappointing. Not at all a French menu - the food was very bland and uninteresting and ridiculously expensive. We were prepared to pay the prices for some good rich authentic French dishes, but having lived in France I was disappointed to find nothing recognizable as 'French' on the menu and the food we ordered was nothing special either - I cook better myself at home. Do yourself a favor and go for one of the high end Italian restaurants in Newton - this is not worth the effort....:-(
We never ask for a to go bag. Never. On principle. Never. We did at this restaurant. The most sublime mediterranean chicken we had ever experienced with the most delicious lentils. Just fabulous. Both perfectly roasted and seasoned.
Food and service were both terrible. The whole sea bass came with its skin stuck so tightly to the flesh, it was impossible to separate from the flesh and bones. A request for help getting the bones out was denied with a snooty excuse about legal liability, and after an arduous dissection, the fish was cold and tasted old. The waitress kept asking if my friend wanted a dairy sauce after being told of her dairy allergy, then suggested 'real Earl Gray' when asked for herbal tea. When we dared to complain about the inedible fish, manager Yves from France insisted on charging us for it, and then insulted us. I wonder why all tables were empty except for ours. Maybe other people know not to go there when the Tuesday crew is working? Disastrous food, incompetent service, snooty management.
The food was great, but we really appreciated the low noise level.
Every course of the tasting menu was amazing. Well worth the visit!
In a word -- Fantastic! We did the chef's tasting and everything was phenomenal (well, until the dessert - will get to that later. Staff was exceptional as well!
We had pumpkin soup, scallops, white fish, duck -- all absolutely delicious through & through. Re: dessert, we were told it was the chocolate mousse but ended up being served the prosecco sorbet. Not that it wasn't very tasty -- but it's not what I expected and not what I would have ordered. It put a little damper on the meal, but I tried to remember all the *absolutely delicious* items we'd had earlier in the evening. We would absolutely return!
Food is creative in some ways but lacks finesse in my opinion. Service and ambiance are well under my expectations.
Food was exceptional, as was the service, we'll definitely return.
Very solid meal. Good moderate wine list. Quality execution, pleasant environment, certainly will return.
Took my husband for his Bday. We did the Chef’s whim tasting menu with wine pairing. Everything was spectacular! We shared our preferences up front and they accommodated my aversion to goat cheese and my husband’s fear of steak tartare.
Chef received an à la minute delivery of sea bass and one of our courses wasn’t even on the menu! I particularly appreciate the lack of attitude and preciousness when our server described each plate and wine. We had soup, scallops, sea bass, duck and a chocolate dessert. Portions are generous. Very interesting and unique wines. We won’t be waiting for another special occasion to return! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
We had a very good experience. Our server was terrific and the food was excellent. Reservations were easy to make and we were promptly seated at the appointed time.
Only two issues:
1) The bar was backed up for no apparent reason and we had to wait too long for opening drinks and wines by the glass with our entree.
2) While the food we had was excellent, we suggest you have more items on the menu from which to choose .
We live close by and we love Lumiere because we can hear each other speak, the food is delicious and the service is excellent. It's small enough to feel intimate without being pretentious.
After a rough start under new ownership, it has improved. The dining room is no longer as upscale and the wine list is not as good as previously, but the food quality is excellent.
The waiter was rushed and should actually look for another job, he knew nothing about the wine and “ lying about the flavors” ambience was pale and boring
Great as always. This was our first time to sit at the (small) bar, and we loved it. Paul, the bartender, was terrific!
Divine. Sublime. I don't have my thesaurus handy or I would include many more accolades.
I have been here many times before, but for some reason it may be slipping a bit or perhaps just an off night. Service was truly slow. Waited about 15 minutes or more for drinks. Even the bread didn't arrive to the table in a timely fashion. This is particularly annoying when you go with an out of town guest and your've given them a good review in anticipation of going. Plus the fish did not seem as deliciously fresh as I've had it there in the past. Menu also seemed a bit heavy on cauliflower. I will give it another try though since it was one of my go-to French restaurants.
Lumiere is my preferred "special occasion" restaurant. The food is always terrific. On the rich side (I would prefer a little less butter.)
Great food in a high-class but easygoing , quiet atmosphere.
This was our first return after a visit about 15 years ago. Our evening was delightful. The table was ready when we arrived, the service was timely, the food delicious; a great evening.
Had a delightful evening at Lumiere. The food was creative and wonderful and the service was friendly. Will definitely return.
So surprised to find such fine cuisine in little West Newton. Each dish exquisite, service impeccable and truly lovely ambiance. Best restaurant in Newton!
The scallops, duck and panna cotta were superb and the service was perfect. Couldn't ask for a better dining experience.
Far exceeded our expectations. The complementary flavors and wine pairings were perfect!
Food was truly exceptional. Good cocktails. Nice wine list. We had beet salad, scallops, duck and swordfish. Service was good, not great. Loved that noise level is low. Truly a lovely pleasant dinner experience. Will return.
One of our best meals in recent memory. Really outstanding preparation and presentation. We would highly recommend it!
Dinner was great; delicate preparation and innovation active combinations
The food, service and ambiance were exceptional. Our server, Paul, was well versed on all of the menu & made Good recommendations. He even brought out a desert with a candle when he realized it was a birthday dinner.
The swordfish was the best I have ever had.Beautifully crisp on the outside, tender and moist inside.
Wonderful! Our waiter was efficient and friendly, the food was delicious! We had a great time!
Had dinner with longtime friends, one of whom has hearing difficulties and wanted a place where we could talk. I suggested Lumiere and it delivered. Usual great food and service. This is a quality place!
Food was really good for digestion.
Our table for 4 chose the chef's menu with wine parings and found each course and each wine was superb. Our waiter explained the courses and accompanying wines with competence. The dinner was well paced. The staff was very accommodating with a substitution due to allergies of one of our party.
As usual, the food was fantastic and the waiter helpful and attentive. However, due to a problem with the restaurant computer that communicated with the kitchen, the main meal took over an hour to be delivered to our table. Although near the end of this wait we were brought complimentary drinks, we were very hungry and would have preferred food. I was not happy that I had to disappoint my out-of-town guests with such a long wait.
Amazing food and incredible service-- you guys made my girlfriend's birthday special. Thanks so much for the flowers and help with the "check"!
Lumiere is a lovely restaurant with good food and a wonderful bistro ambience. It is so nice to have it in Newton..close to home. It is a great place to meet friends and be able to talk and hear each other!
Food was very good but overpriced, particularly since side dishes were extra. Biggest disappointment was dessert. Very small portion and not inexpensive.
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meal we had at Lumière. I'm French and picky, and wasn't expecting much more than standard bistro fare, but the food was very good.
We both had specials, which were traditional cuisine--not the most creative--but well prepared with quality ingredients.
We will definitely be back.
This was our first time to Lumiere and we all loved it. The entire experience was very positive - great service (our server was friendly and knowledgable) and the food was excellent. Throughout the evening, our server surprised us with unexpected treats - watermelon with tapenade and warm chocolate chip cookies.......
We all agreed (4 fairly picky foodies) that we loved Lumiere and will definitely return soon.
