It was awesome!🦄
First time toLudwig and I chose the tasting menu with pairing. The presentation was sophisticated, the food very good and with a very prompt and friendly service.
We ate at Ludwig’s on our last night in Vail. What a treat! Everything was delicious including the elk carpaccio and salmon starters as well as the lamb rack and beef tenderloin entree’s. They were exceptionally accommodating to our party’s member with celiac disease and the need for a truly gluten free experience. Our waiter, Anton, from Austria, was excellent and made us feel like we were truly in Austria.
I’d definitely plan to return the next time I’m in Vail.
The food was fabulous as well as the service. I had the chef's menu and I hope that they add that tenderloin to the regular menu, it was delicious
The service was not good. The food was great though
Excellent service and attention to detail. The chef sent out delicious samplers to our table, what an upscale place with upscale dining at a can do, will do price!!
The restaurant was expensive, but the food was great and the service was impeccable.
Wonderful quiet ambiance. Food presentation was fabulous. Food was okay but nothing to write home about. Service was excellent.
We celebrated two milestone birthdays here at Ludwigs this week while skiing at Vail. The food was delicious...the presentation outstanding. The service was impeccable and our waiter was outstanding. Not a cheap meal for sure, but we had a TravelZoo voucher thank goodness. A very special occasion place.
Always a special treat to come here! The service is outstanding and so in the ambiance!
The dishes are beautiful and very eclectic! We all eat gluten, but enjoy the gluten free menu at Ludwig's. A very special place!
The Sonnenalp is one of Vail's very best lodges and truly captures the ambiance of an Austrian Alpine hotel. Reminds me of my favorite Austrian ski lodge, the Sporthotel Lorunser in Zurs. Ludwig's is the Sonnenalp's premium restaurant.
A few years ago the restaurant decided to go completely gluten free. This seems to be a big dietary fad these days but in fact, it is just that - a fad because only a small percentage of people are actually gluten sensitive, such as those with celiac disease. For the rest of us, it is meaningless (I am an MD). This does, however, have significant effects on how food may taste. Often it makes no difference, but it can be disastrous.
I had the tasting menu. The first course was a lovely fresh salad with shaved tenderloin similar to carpaccio. The second course was the killer dish of the evening, an absolutely fabulous butternut squash soup. It was worth dining at Ludwig's just for this. Magnificent in every way- texture, flavor and artistic presentation. The extra kick was the added exquisite large scallop. They should keep this soup permanently on the menu. A larger bowl with a few scallops would make a great lunch all by itself.
The main entry was a very tender, tasty beef filet with an excellent sauce. No problems with that.
So what didn't work? The gluten free bread is simply terrible. Tastes like stale leftover bread with bad texture and no flavor. Yet the gluten free crackers were really good. The Crepe Suzette dessert really suffered. The crepe had a very odd texture and bland taste and the filling wasn't any better. This is nothing like classic Crepe Suzette. The deconstructed (= crumbs) carrot cake was also disappointing.
Atmosphere and service were impeccable.
Do I recommend Ludwig's? Absolutely! It is charming and there are many things on the menu that are excellent. Just be aware of the limitations of gluten free dining and order appropriately.
Lovely Austrian atmosphere and great staff. Unfortunately food is nowhere near the atmosphere and staff.
Just ok. Tried too hard in my opinion to create dishes that should have been simpler.
The atmosphere was authentic alpine decor and very cozy. Our server was exceptional. I would consider the menu very gourmet. The whole restaurant is gluten free, which didn't matter to any of our group, but unfortunately the gluten free bread was noticeably less decadent than we prefer. The portions are small but each meal is artistically placed on the plate. The butternut squash soup with a scallop in the center was divine. I ordered three first courses instead of an entree. The tuna tartare was very small but tasty. My other choice was the deep fried shrimp, which was way over cooked with way too much coating and too crispy. There were only two of them and lots of little bits of things sitting on the plate that were not described to me. Something that looked like torn pieces of navy blue bread. No idea. So I couldn't eat that. My husband had the filet and loved it. So I just ordered the wrong thing. Overall the place was lovely. The chef came out and introduced himself to us which was nice. Also, diners are treated to two courses of complimentary amuse bouche.(sp?) The first one was duck and the other one was pate. For 4 people with no drinks and no desserts, it was $225.00.
We loved the chef's attention to visual detail and his creativity. The amuse buche and the "cotton" candy were such lovely gifts which communicate to the diner that our patronage is appreciated.
Thank you, we will be back.
Best gourmet dining with n vail
Buena experiencia de comida molecular. Excelente cava y asesoría del sommelier. Lo máximo el cotton candy.
We had a great meal at Ludwigs. Lovely atmosphere, great staff and delicious food. The dover sole is a must!
The tasting menu was perfectly proportioned, creative, refreshing - and the wait staff was impeccably prompt, cheery and knowledgeable. Everything was gluten free - a rare treat!
Wonderful food and service. We will be back.
Everything was fantastic, the food, the service, the space. They go over the top with everything. My favorite thing is the cotton candy tree they bring at the end of your meal.
Best Thanksgiving meal I've ever had . . . don't tell my mom or grandmother :)
We went on Good Friday so we did not eat meat --the fish selection was a bit limited but we did enjoy what we ate. We would really like to go back and try some of the meat selections as they sounded delicious. One thing that was not to our liking was the gluten free bread they served--the waiter did tell us that they had "regular" bread --which was very tasty.
My husband and I have visited Ludwig's for years now, but I have to say the service was really bad this time. I know the restaurant was busy...but the staff really seemed to focus on the three or four tables of 6 people rather than on the tables for 2 people. Had to ask for what should have been a given several times.
On the other hand, the elegant, rustic decor has not changed and I am so thankful. And the food was delightful.
If we do return, we will visit on an evening that is less busy and at an earlier time in the evening.
Extraordinary, even after two experiences in one week! Best restaurant in Vail without doubt for foodies, both a la carte and tasting menu. Interesting in every course, surprising even, for the mixture of flavors and textures. Excellent pairing of wines, whether individually for each course in the tasting menu, or with the choice of a complementary bottle for the a la carte menu.
Spectacular tasting menu! High interest and exciting marriages of flavors and textures. Unexpected wine pairings complemented every plate. Best dinner ever in Vail over many years.
Amazing service and atmosphere. The food was out of this world. The presentation was gorgeous and the prices were not that bad, especially for the wine. $12 a glass for good Chardonnay. In this town, that's hard to find. The staff was young & energetic & the restaurant was beautiful. Would definitely recommend!
Really great their entire menu is gluten free, however the place seemed a tad behind the times. More of a classic "expensive restaurant" but can get better value at more up to date places with more adventurous dishes, or better execution. It was a nice meal, and great wine list, but just wasn't "wowed" here.
This was my first and only time eating at Ludwig's. The room is charming -- mountain rustic -- and comfortably quiet. The service was excellent, friendly and efficient. My companion and I both started with the Local Greens salad, which was very good. For main courses, she had the sea bass, which she liked, but my Tagliatelle with Shrimp was awful: a soggy mess of pasta with a couple of shrimp, with no flavor other than too much garlic and hot pepper oil. Also, the bread was tasteless and dry. Since there are so many other good restaurants in Vail, I am unlikely to return soon.
The food was quite good and the ambiance was great. The staff was professional and accommodating. My only complaint is that the time between ordering and receiving our entrees for a group of 4 took nearly an hour and there were plenty of empty tables in the restaurant. Given that this was my first time visiting Ludwig's, I am unsure as to whether or not this is common.
Very creative dishes at Ludwigs with excellent combination of flavors. The staff was very accommodating and the wine sommelier was terrific. Nice upscale location in quiet corner at Sonnenalp hotel. The music and bar scene is steps away in larger hotel lobby areas.
The chef taster menu is phenomenal. Blows your taste buds. The mushroom appetizer comes with a mushroom sorbet and tasty cinnamon crumbs which you mix into a slurry. It tastes amazing. The sea bass is excellent. This is not the same old boring mountain food you will find everywhere else.
Quiet with wonderful ambiance, great food and service. A secret gem.
My boyfriend and I were floored by the whimsical dishes we had for dinner - they were delicious and so creative! I mentioned on my reservation that we were celebrating his birthday and the staff took it up so many more notches than expected! At no request, they brought him a birthday chocolate ganache on the house and later another dessert! We both ordered the Mushroom Meadow to start - fantastic choice. Entrees ordered were the sea bass and Colorado lamb... I think we didn't talk once we got our food but to look up at each other to say "wow, this is amazing!" Our official dessert (one out of the three that ended up coming to our table) was the coconut snowball. It was, again, fun, delicious, and creative. I would come here again, hands down, to celebrate any special occasion. The service was so great and the atmosphere was very nice yet casual. Such a true highlight of our stay in Vail!
The restaurant was short waitstaff and kitchen staff the evening we were there. So the service was very slow. We waited 90 minutes for our entrée. They were not hot and oversalted and can only after I complained to the restaurant manager. The wooden chair I was given to sit collapsed because one of the legs cracked while I was seated in it . Of course I received a slight injury in the fall but no one seemed to care. I told the manager about it she told me their old chairs but didn't offer any type of accommodation other than a new chair. I was highly disappointed in our evening
Amazing ambiance... Beautiful restaurant. The chef knows the deal when it comes to fine dining. We couldn't be happier.
Food was superb. Sea bass and meats were excellent. Salads were exciting. The sommelier hit a home run. Highly recommend this experience.
Patrick was our server and he was so polished and charming. The food was absolutely outstanding - I think the best in Vail by far. It turns out that the restaurant is also totally gluten free which we didn't even know until the end when we were informed - but if that would put you off, please do not let it. This is truly a 5 star meal from start to finish. Other reviews I read do not do this restaurant justice - this is true European fine dining - the best we have had since Switzerland. 5 stars to the chef, pastry chef, and wonderful staff!
You cannot beat the Easter brunch at Ludwig's! The desserts alone justify the choice and Sunday morning on their patio in the village is a treat not to be missed ! FanTAStic staff!!
Great food, great service. We picked Ludwig's hoping that it would bring the same feel as some of the Austrian ski towns we have been to and we weren't disappointed! Would definitely come back.
