Great location, food, and service for a business breakfast meeting. Great proximity to Moscone Center - I would come back here again.
Just horrible. Had the foie gras and the pork cheeks. Will never go back.
We selected this restaurant because it was close to a theater we were going to. It exceeded all expectations, good food, great service, fine wine and a quiet atmosphere. Only the music was not to our liking. We dine at more than 50 restaurants a year in the city.
Portion of food was ridiculously small even if it tasted good. One bite or two per course....
Disappointed by the choice on the menu too, pretty small for a restaurant of this kind.
Overall I will not go back, nothing special and too little food for the money.
Excellent food, elegant presentation, impeccable service. The dishes work on more than one level to stimulate the senses. The vegetable reductions in place of gravy work well. The sous vide meats are flavorful and incredibly tender. Only off note was the hostess continuing to talk on the phone after acknowledging us, far longer than polite. Two other wait staff were around and could have seated us. the restaurant was not crowded but we were called to us know that they were not honoring the Dine About Time reservation. Portions were on the small side but all in all it was an excellent meal.
Excellent food & great service.
Great location and great decor/service. The food fell a little short. I know that we were ordering off of the price fixe 3 course menu, however, the portions were just too small. Perfect presentation though as it might have been the nicest plating (both the dishware and the presentation of the food) I have ever seen. Even better than Gary Danko, Boulevard, etc.
We decided to try their "Taste of San Francisco" special menu during Taste of San Francisco week in January. It was outstanding and we would definitely go back to try their regular menu and sampling menu. Extensive wine list.
Really liked the beautifully presented and tasty food. Don't order cocktails though.
Superb meal. Bold flavors and satisfying portions (though a big eater might find them small). Inventive combinations. Loved the use of and preparation of the quince in the pork cheeks. Service was attentive and professional though pace of arrival of dishes was a little hurried. Dining room is attractive but was impacted by the noise of the lobby bar. The food is worth it though!
Perhaps because we asked for the Dine About Town menu, we were ushered to a booth at the back, near a drafty door, although tables around us remained empty for the nearly 2 hours we were there. Service was very poor. The person who took our order was unwilling to answer questions about the menu, and all three courses were delivered by different people. After our dinner plates were cleared, we were totally ignored for 20 minutes before dessert arrived, although I had to order dessert at the beginning of the meal. There were only 6 items on the Dine About menu, and the three I ordered all contained grapefruit; two contained pork, and two featured citron: Repetitious. One appetizer was miniscule vegetables lined up on a huge plate: Pretentious
Had a great time at Luce while visiting San Fran from Seattle - our waiter (Josh) was charming and gracious and knew the menu. Our scallops and tenderloin were prepared just right and we were pleasantly plump after the meal - we would def come back for another wonderful experience.
Great food, but be warned -- the portions of the tasting menu are quite small. If you have a hearty appetite, you may leave not quite full. Very good service and nice decor, though the restaurant never approached a full vibrant evening seating. Lots of open tables for a Saturday night. Nonetheless, I would visit again -- the food was fantastic!
Very good to excellent in every way except ambience - which is VERY BAD.
Excellent food, excellent service. The menus are always playful, but sophisticated.
ambiance and service wasn't great, but food was really great!
The food was excellent but the ambiance was lacking
food was good, service was average. High corkage at $25 per bottle.added 18% gratuity for a party of 5, never seen that before
Enjoyed a business lunch here. It was half empty and fairly quiet. Service was very formal, attentive, but didn't feel pretentious. The food was pretty good and I wouldn't hesitate to go back to try other dishes.
The food was good (scallop and pork belly app, pork cheek with bulgar, "citrus" dessert) and did show some hints of greatness but ultimately did not live up to my expectations of dining in a restaurant of this price and supposed caliber. My friend's fish (steelhead trout) was so fishy she could not eat it. Most dishes lacked salt. Service was prompt, warm, and friendly.
This is my second time at Luce - the service is excellent and I find real good wines that won't dig a big hole in the pocket! I love the idea of space between tables; great for conversation as there is hardly any noise!
It is unfortunate for Luce that Dominique Crenn, the person responsible behind its Michelin star, has gone on to open her own restaurant. The review here reflects her outstanding capabilities. While she is slated to continue in a consulting role; it's likely not to be the same. So, take this raitng with a bit of caution.
very good food - smallest portions in S F !
We waited over one hour for our breakfast. It was then over cooked and had obviously been sitting under a heat lamp. Our server was nice but completly overwhelmed. There were two managers helping but I still sat with an empty water glass for 30 minutes and never received a refill of hot water for my tea. Go to Dottie's or some other diner downtown. This overpriced hotel restaurant was a mess.
Went here with a group of friends for Dine About Town. The meat was cooked to perfection and the combination of the various textures in each of the dishes was amazing. And I LOVED the chocolate dessert. The service staff was pleasant, attentive, and quick. An excellent meal all around.
The food was very good, and I went in with pretty high expectations. However, the service was terrible for a restaurant of any caliber, much less one at this level. All the reviews I'd read about the service being terrible were true. Everything seemed to take forever, including waiting some 30+ minutes for the check after the dessert plates were taken away, and the restaurant was maybe half full. I'd give it another shot because the food was good (recommend the scallop app, tenderloin, and pork cheek), but the service was truly terrible. Oh, and for those who may care, calling the decor "eclectic" is generous at best.
Enjoyable meal at Luce last night. We were early birds which was a wise choice as the place filled up very quickly after 8pm. Chosen 3 course from a la carte and did not disappoint, every dish was well executed. Service was attentive without being too fussy. Will remember this meal for many moons to come.
We enjoyed the entire experience. The food was amazing - very creative flavor combinations and nice size portions. The lamb belly was especially tasty and cooked to perfection. The servers were very helpful with recommendations and the wine steward even recommended we change wine glasses to enhance the wine we had selected. We will definitely be back.
My 3 friends and I had a fabulous time! The food was incredible with a lovely presentation. I was truly blow away. Felt like I was a judge on some celebrity food channel.
Had an early dinner and the restaurant was pretty empty. Very nice presentations and very good food. Will try again and go for the chef's tasting menu.
I took my husband here for his birthday; being Jan 3rd we are always limited with the restaurants that are open. First choice was Lafitte which was closed, so the wonderful chef there recommended Luce. The food lived up to expectation but it's a typical hotel setting. One thing that always annoys me is when ordering wine by the glass they do not give you the nice & appropriate wine glass, but use a general one on the table. This happened and we mentioned it to them; they did bring the appropriate glasses and repour fresh wine, but at a restaurant like this you shouldnt have to ask! Since the restaurant wasnt busy I would have expected the waiters to be more engaged
Great attention to food. The slow cooked steak was awesome and the lobster was simply heavenly in the first visit. Second visit, we tried the prix fixe menu with especially delicious slow cooked dishes; it was great also with special mentioning of the great desert with the desert chef personally came up to explain enthusistically! Third visit was a lunch which is a steal in value. Fourth visit was for dine about town this year: we loved the appertizers and the overall value. Thank you for provide consistently great food. We are making more and more people over and can be assured that we do not disappoint! Great for all occasions!
Expensive ... far more expensive than its $ rating would indicate. Valet parking at the hotel is also expensive even with the resturant validations.
The staff were all very nice and attentive. Food was good but not French Laundry good.
Wonderful occation to have a dinner here. Sommeliers have good knowledge and appropriate to offer wines to dishes. Wines are goodl
My wife and I went to Luce for a lunch date. We were very very happy with the cuisine, which was both innovative and very well executed. Most restaurants miss on one of those two.
Excellent Meal, a little let down to hear that the chef was leaving.
What an utter disappointment on many levels. My sea bass was fishy and uninspired. My husband's pork loin was adequate but nothing special. The service was horrible: no care, personalization, or attention - very slow although the restaurant was nearly empty (which was shocking). Would never recommend and wish we hadn't gone. A waste of money.
The food is very good, the wine selection lackluster and uninformed.
2009 Christmas Dinner was much better, more effort put into last year's choices. Good food and service, but not worth the Michelin star rating at least this time.
Great food, great wine and wine service. Food service was poor. Very inexperienced waiter for such a high end restaurant.
