"ingenious restaurant ... by delving into the past, it seems Sheehan has found his moment of triumph." -Bill Addison, Eater's Best New Restaurants in America
"irresistible small bites and Boston's best bread program" - Corby Kummer, Boston Magazine
"Loyal Nine is one of the most interesting restaurants in town" -Devra First, Boston Globe
East Coast Revival cuisine. Casual setting, shellfish + vegetable focused. Local craft beer from top brewers, 100% grower-producer wine list, craft cocktails. Large dining room good for large groups, private dining options, patio + garden.
The service was quite slow. It took about 20 minutes for one of the drinks at my table to arrive and about 40-50 for our food to arrive. I had the Red Flannel Hash which had way too many beets for it to be enjoyable. My table shared the pancakes and was delicious! Overall, I'd go again because it was an interesting space with a diverse menu - but I'd just know to count on waiting a while for food.
Love the food and drinks!! Super cute outdoor seating, perfect for summer days.
This is a very special place. The food is unusual and delicious. The service is out of this world! The vibe is very Cambridge. Love it
Good food but extremely slow and disappointing service.
The food is outstanding. The selection of small plates is diverse and delicious. The prices are more than fair. The only drawback is the ambience. The room is very noisy and the furnishings are merely functional. That said, I will still definitely return.
The asparagus dish is quite small, I believe 4 stalks came. Fried clams were a bit fishy. The highlights were the vegetable oat dish and the dessert (some sort of chocolate bead pudding with los of fixings).
Service and ambiance were good. I’d be willing to try again.
I treated by sister to a dinner here for her birthday - she has lots of dietary restrictions, and they were still able to do a truly incredible 4 course meal with wine pairing for each that worked for her. It's such a rare occasion that she gets to go out and she always feels nervous about inconveniencing a restaurant. This was the exact opposite: Loyal Nine made her feel so special with everything they did - I could not ask for more!
This is a fabulous local restaurant with tasty, healthy, creative dishes!
Loyal Nine is an A+ all around. Four of us went for dinner and opted for the tasting menu, which I could not recommend more highly. It was fantastic; every dish was innovative, accessible, delicious, and beautifully presented. The wine list is broad, interesting, and well-curated. The service was warm and knowledgable every step of the way. Go. Enjoy a beautiful evening with wonderful food.
Food is great. Past experiences have been good. Tonight the service was INCREDIBLY slow -- three of us ordered 5 plates between us and we were there for at least 2 hours. Server was a bit apathetic. I would still recommend this place, but caution people to maybe request that their order be pushed through more quickly than maybe is the norm.
The food was overpriced for what it was. Easy egg apparently means raw egg, the food was not good. disappointed
Everything was GREAT but it was incredibly loud and hard to hear. Food was great, service was great...would go back for sure - but with people w better ears!
Amazing amazing amazing!!
We spent 170 between the 3 of us and left hungry. Portions are extremely small.
Awesome food awesome service overall recommend loyal nine to anyone!
One of our very favorite places! Food is really innovative.
What I could eat and drink had amazing, complex flavors. However, for some reason they couldn't make the steak or the chicken dish without gluten or dairy. How hard is it to make a steak without butter? If you have food allergies I would recomend checking if you're going to be able to eat enough since the menu is so small and curated
The food was fine as was the service and atmosphere; unfortunately, none of these meet the level of the prices - it is over priced. It's just not that great.
Had a great meal here. Food and drink are delicious if a bit eclectic. Service was outstanding. Very attentive and generous - offering tastings of wine when I was undecided. Only complaint is noise level. Luckily we got there early before it filled up. It was full when we left and very noisy. But all and all a great night and we will definitely be back!
Excellent drinks and food!
Lovely atmosphere. Delicious food. Attentive staff. Lots of local hipsters with wee ones. We had the lobster popover and pancakes. Yum
Very mediocre experience at brunch. While the breakfast sandwiches were both quite good, the asparagus and poached egg were both served cold, and when we told one of the waiters that we had expected it to be warm, he said they grill the asparagus ahead of time and then he just walked away, without showing any concern for the fact that we were unhappy with it or asking if they could make something else for us. If someone takes the time to stop you to express disappointment with a dish, the response should not be “that’s just the way it is.” Barely taking the time to stop to listen to our concern was absolutely unacceptable.
The service was poor all around—the waiter was unhelpful when answering questions about the menu, it took way too long to get something a simple as sugar for the coffee, and we felt pretty ignored for long stretches of time. Also, please start offering some kind of sugar alternative for coffee! I’ve been to Loyal Nine for dinner several times and always enjoyed it, but this brunch was very disappointing.
Awesome restaurant with incredible food! We did the shared supper for $60 each and it was worth every penny. Each dish brought a perfect combination of flavors I’d never experienced before. It was exciting to try new foods and be surprised by each next dish. Husband and I were both completely stuffed by the end. I’d definitely go back!
Shared supper is great fun.
My (adult) daughter and I sat at the counter facing the kitchen and split about nine of the small plates. Every dish - every bite - was perfect. The dishes are creative, the components are fresh and locally sourced, the presentations are lovely and interesting, each dish works on its own and the menu works in a way to put together a coherent meal. The wait staff, and in the case of the kitchen counter, the kitchen staff, are knowledgeable, professional and friendly (and willing to answer all kinds of questions). The cocktail list is fun, pairs well with the food and the drinks are well-executed. The wine list is filled with unusual and tasty bottles and glasses at reasonable prices. This is one of my very favorite restaurants in Boston.
Super tasty and creative dishes, maybe not a great value, but definitely good eating.
The food is good but too complicated and trying to be innovative which moves the focus to the melange of ingredients and mode of preparation rather than the essential flavors of the food. The restaurant was very loud. The bathrooms were not very clean.
Very polite, funny and accommodating service. Too bad the chicken was lukewarm and overcooked even after having sent it back to the kitchen. Atmosphere was wonderful and dessert was perfect.
Great place, great atmosphere, amazing food. We had a wonderful time.
We love Loyal Nine. Fabulous food, wonderfully creative, colonial-inspired menu, superb service. We took our son and two of his friends out for a birthday meal and had such fun sharing all of the wonderful vegetable sharing dishes as well as several main course dishes. Bravo Loyal Nine!
Loyal Nine is a very special place. Chef Marc has a very unique, thoughtful, and creative approach to truly traditional (and delicious) New England cuisine. The Shared Supper always delights and satisfies, but remarkably unlike other tasting menus, the diner walks away feeling a fullness and satisfaction (they really take care of you with plenty of family style deliciousness) without heaviness. The staff is also comprised of some of the most deeply hospitable, knowledgeable, and caring humans. It's one of my favorite restaurants in Boston/Cambridge, without a doubt.
Excellent food, fine service. Quite noisy, plus music which was on the loud and bombastic side.
Service was pretty bad. No one checked on us. But the food was good, though expensive for what you get. No Pina colada at the bar was irritating.
Loyal Nine never ever disappoints! Soo many delicious dishes that are always bright, seasonal, and creative. Cocktails, beer and wine lists are extensive. Staff are always welcoming and very knowledgeable re: menu items and recommendations. It’s a great spot for a low-key date night or a fun night out with friends.
What a great place to eat and wonderful experience. The food was absolutely amazing. The servers made sure all our needs were well taken care of and were well educated on the food and options. We will definitely be returning when were are close to this area again and will recommend this to anyone we know in that area.
We met a friend for a dinner on a Tuesday night and thoroughly enjoyed out time. We chose a la carte from the menu. Each of the seven small plates were fabulous. We had a hard time choosing favorites. Loved the carrots, which were sweet and smoky with just a little bite. The roast chicken was tasty. You can't go wrong with the duck and pork belly. Rounded out the meal with an amazing chocolate chess pie.
The atmosphere is a casual and rustic and not pretentious at all. I wish there were more people in the house. It was a little too quiet. Why wasn't it packed out? Maybe it's a Tuesday night thing.
The noise was so defining that we had to shout while sitting across from one another at a small table The food tried to hard; Sunchokes with tiny spots of sea urchin and several chips of chicken skin -- an inexplicable combination. The wine list is inexpensive and excellent, served by a knowledgable sommelier.
Originally wanted to check out the café but ultimately decided to drop by for dinner. I’m glad I did because the small plates were delicious and filling. Hope to come back again!
There were very few patrons the night we went but still it took 35 minutes to get our first drinks. There was only one server taking orders. The charcuterie plate was disappointingly fatty. The steel cut oat dish stood out along with the cauliflower and cheddar fritters. I wouldn't order any of the other 6 dishes again.
Really good food and an attentive staff. The menu had a nice mix of veg friendly dishes, and everything tasted fresh. The brownie was to die for!
