Los Charros Cantina
Chef Colt Taylor of The Essex Restaurant is excited to bring the shoreline Los Charros Cantina, an homage to authentic Mexican street food. With a simple approachable Kids Menu, and a wide array of spirits, Los Charros serves as the perfect place for a family outing or a girls night out. This fun and casual new concept will be served in the open kitchen, bar room, and newly added al fresco dining area of the current space. You’ll find Los Charros through the rear entrance of the building, where the entrance for The Essex is found through the stone front vestibule.
Very impressed by the cleaning procedures between patrons and obvious care to social distancing. Food was delicious as always. We look forward to continuing to eat with them on our regularly scheduled evening out!
Love this place! Great Mexican great new options, fresh ! Fabulous drinks !!! One of the best spots in CT
The food was outstanding. Very authentic with great attention to detail. Chelsi was our server and she made our experience even better. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and took the time to answer our questions and accommodate our requests. Order the salsa flight - it’s so much fun and it’s delicious! We couldn’t pick just one
Enjoyed an evening with great friends, awesome food, service and atmosphere!
An ABSOLUTE MUST for anyone!
This was our first time dining at Los Chorros. We had tried coming a few other times but didnt realize they dont serve lunch. The atmosphere is awesome, our waitress was great, the food was good but portions are small (2 tacos for $15 without sides) the desserts were really good. We will definitely try it again!
We had a reservation which I strongly suggest. We were sat by the bar and the seating there is awkward. I was in the way, the bar was busy and noisy and add music on top and you can't hear. We waited for a server and finally someone came to take a drink order but she wasn't our server. Food was good....don't fill up on the chips! The have sides of guac on the mene was told me they weren't doing sides that night so to get guac you had to pay $10 for an order of chips and guac. NOT. The roast pork was great as were the different moles that surrounded it. I felt like this was a bar that served food. Not sure I'd go back.
We had a BLAST! The food was incredible. We all had tacos of different kinds and every single person was blown away. The guacamole was so good we ordered a second order half way through our meal. The server was fast and knowledgeable, drinks came fast and were delicious. The open kitchen is a welcome touch and while it was slightly loud you could still have a conversation. We already can’t wait to come back!
super cute and amazing food. Family friendly meets trendy with music pumping. love the open kitchen. everything was amazing from service to each bite. margs were delish! will be back.
Great food at reasonable prices. Don’t expect your usual Mexican fare; this is much different but nonetheless interesting and delicious. Our bartender, Scott, was awesome and recommended some amazing tequilas. Will definitely be back!
The food is very good but, the way the menu reads and when the specials are explained, it is not clear as to what the entrée actually consist of. Food is very good and the place is busy because of that. We went on Valentine's so, is was a very busy night. Service was on the weak side because of that. We will definitely go again. The more we know what the food consists of, the better the experience.
We went on Valentines Day. The service was great, the food was great, the atmosphere was good, did get a little pricey but well worth it!
Good food. Pricey for what you receive. Service was ok.
Took over an hour to receive food
We are very sorry for the delay in getting your food. We know that New Years Eve got quite hectic and we had some issues that are entirely on us, not you to burden. With that said, If you would be able to send me contact info, we would like to invite you back in for dinner on us!
Came here for my partners b’day because they had been wanting to try it. We began with the salsa flight, which was incredible! I wanted to take home four of them. The homemade chips are good, really thick and crunchy, but I found I kept breaking them into smaller pieces, as the size was a bit large for one bite. My actual meal wasn’t great. I had the Seacoast mushroom tacos, and was very excited about them because I’m a mushroom enthusiast, but there was no warning on the that they would be as spicy as they were, so I couldn’t eat them. I also got them in a hard shell, which after one bite, fell apart into a million pieces. My partner had the fluke tacos and said they were really good, they ate most of my tacos and did say that they weren’t that great. Bummer. Anyways, the main event, and the redeemer for me is always dessert. I had the Paw Paw custard, and OMG. If it’s available, GET IT. It’s served with a cinnamon kind of reduction, and whip cream. I wish they made in a bigger serving to be honest, as I would skip the mains altogether and go straight for that. I also tried the flan, and it was excellent. The Carmel was really nice and well done, dark and slightly burnt. It perfectly contrasted the rest of the custard. Overall, our server was outstanding, and made some great recommendations, such as which salsa was their fave and a side dish for my partner. We will probably return again, for apps and desserts.
Great food, great ambience, love the atmosphere and energy and love Erin, the waitress, I've had twice. Want her every time. I will be back.
Awesome place. A must for anyone looking for great food, great drinks, and great atmosphere.
This place exceeds expectations every time we go. Food tastes fresh, not heavy. Not your run of the mill Mexican, but flavors which are unique. A ton of gluten free options! The chips are a bit thick, but we still seem to eat them all. Mushroom taco is amazing!
Food and service was amazing. Katy our server was so friendly and helpful. My husband does t care for Mexican food, Katy went above and beyond to explain the menu and helped him find a dish that he throughly enjoyed. Now we have a new favorite place! Margaritas were excellent!
The tortilla chips were OUSTANDING. Choice of tacos very good and interesting. The guacamole appetizer was delicious. I mentioned my dislike of cilantro to the server and did not taste a bit of cilantro in any dish. I don't know what dishes it might have been in normally, but it was nice to not have to dodge it. I will definitely be back
Erin was our server and pleasantly surprised us with her tips for drinks, appetizers & meals....also hot round donuts balls, drizzled in caramel sauce, for dessert. Made for a lovely birthday party with seven of us, seated next to bar in our own private high top table room. Would definitely recommended!!
Food was fabulous. Had the shrimp tacos and salsa flight. Don’t miss the cream corn and wheat berry dish. Loved the black bean soup.Smoked white beans as a side dish were so tasty. Love the trendy vibe and the drinks are spot on. Can’t wait to return.
Won’t go there again. Very disappointing to spend NYE Dinner in a back room with ZERO ambiance, staring at a large soda refrigerator. We made reservations for ‘regular style’ seating (which is in the main room) on New Years. Unfortunately forced to live through a Seinfeld episode. They blamed being busy. In other words they knew how to TAKE a reservation but didn’t know how to HOLD a reservation.
1/4 Update: After voicing review, received multiple rude unprofessional messages blaming the customer (eg. For making reservation 4 days out, giving credibility to their open table required choice for type of seating, and that we need to do a better job planning our holiday).
Dear 'Jerry', We did not run out of cars (tables), that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them. We are very sorry that you were not a fan of the specific table you received, however the appropriate comparison would be that we ran out of the sports car you wanted and we stuck you with a compact car. I get it. It sucks. sadly, it was New Years eve, and most of our restaurant was booked well ahead, yours was not reserved WELL ahead like most.
Excellent! We were searching for authentic Mexican food and found it here! I would highly recommend! Yum!!
Los Charros has become our new favorite restaurant in the tri-town area. We love the food and the margaritas and the service is always great. The noise level can make it challenging to have a conversation sometimes, but I guess that is the price that one pays to eat at such a fun restaurant. We will be there again soon.
Overall the food was very good, but I’ve never seen a Mexican restaurant with as many nut based items on the menu. I’d venture 40% of the dishes have some form of nuts. Mole? Nuts, and there are several types of mole, and none can be guaranteed nut-free. Enchilada stacks? Nuts. Pork shoulder? You guessed it- nuts. They do a great job informing you of nuts, but I have to imagine they could make meals of equal quality without almonds and peanuts. So it was disappointing in the fact that I ended up having to order the fourth or fifth choice on the menu. Salsa flight was very good. Queso was also good.
Fun, low key atmosphere. Perfect place to grab a pre holiday meal and drinks and catch up with friends. The table we sat at was close to the “service” door between the two restaurants though and a bit drafty as it kept opening and closing.
Amazing Mexican food and superb service! We enjoyed chips, a smoky chipotle salsa and guacamole before our entrees arrived. The short rib tacos were outstanding and my picky teenager loved the crispy chicken tacos and tres leches cake for dessert.
Chicken with 7 mole sauces was a gourmets delight. I had the layered enchiladas. The only dish that was not outstanding was the rice and beans. The Jasmine long grain rice is too fragrant for the strong Mexican spices.
The ceviche and guacamole appetizers were also fabulous.
Chelsea was amazing! She knew the menu in such a detailed way, you’d have thought she made each individual dish herself. She was attentive, passionate, thoughtful, energetic...could not have asked for a better server. The added bonus of the speakeasy for a post meal cocktail was unexpected...pleasant atmosphere, very well done. I can not recall the name of the bartender but she was extremely professional and made sure everyone was comfortable and taken care of. Bravo! Can’t wait to return!!! 👏👏👏👏
What a great date night!! My husband and i chose to try Los Charros out and were so glad we did! Atmosphere was invigorating, the food amazing and the service was fantastic! Ben the bartender took care of us and was attentive and talented! We will be back for sure!!!
A fun place with great food and excellent service.
Maybe. Our server was very friendly, but my daughter had a very surly one a few nights earlier.
The basic problem was: Open Table said the restaurant was open until 10:00 p.m. I made a 9:00 p.m. reservation at about 8:15, but when we showed up at 9:00, we were told that the kitchen was closed. Eventually --no apologies offered--they agreed to serve us a limited menu, but I would say the food was not up to its usual standards. For instance, the mushroom and corn taco, which my daughter had raved about, didn't seem to have any corn, and it was somewhat flavorless. Disappointing.
Loved it!! I think they were not prepared for such a big crowd so service was very slow and out of order...meaning we got food before the drinks from the bar arrived. But will be a regular for sure.
Great authentic Mexican flavors. Fantastic service.
highly anticipated visit, but overall a disappointment. the decor was fun, servers were attentive, but food was a but heavy/greasy. the tamale pie was a cheese bomb, the pork tacos were greasy (the short rib tacos were much better). the chips and salsa flight was fun and the happy drinks were good and a bargain. there are better Mexican choices in the area. there were three couples and we asked for separate checks, which the server acknowledged, but the table received one check. when the corrected checks were delivered, there were errors.
We continue to love this place. Always get salsa flight and guacamole, every visit. Special margaritas are great - though this time we were wishing for drink stirrers of some kind. Just a minor thing ;) our young kids aren’t always in the mood for the kids menu here, so sometimes get them just a side of rice. Second time I got the yummy salad, but on a smaller dish this time when a larger bowl is much better like the first time I had it. Again, as we’ve been many times now, there are my little nits for next time. Servers are alway great, but ours this week was exceptional - friendly and efficient.
Food is authentic Mexican
So good. The Margaritas are the best
Service is very friendly and attentive
I love this restaurant.
Great overall experience! Service was excellent, food was great, would absolutely recommend to friends..
