L'Orignal Ratings and Reviews
It was Valentines Day. Our first time trying L'Orignal. 8:00pm reservation made on opentable was not honored. We were seated at 8:25. We were offered drinks or water while we waited but these were not complimentary. We were seated in a table all the way in the back right next to a heater blowing constant hot air the entire night. We sat for another 20 minutes without being noticed by anyone. Finally a waiter comes and asks if we're ready to order. He did not go over the menu, he did not go over specials or anything, we had to ask him to do it. We waited another 25 minutes for our appetizers (a soup and a salmon tartar) at which point the waiter apologized for the delay and brought us a free round of drinks. The waiter apologized by saying "we aren't used to this many 2 person tables". It was Valentines day, what did they expect? 5 minutes after we finished appetizers, the main course came out. Immediately as we were done a busboy began clearing the table, the waiter came back again while the busboy was cleaning to ask us if we wanted dessert. No space or break in between, the busboy was still cleaning as the waiter was going over dessert. We said no to dessert and he brought the bill right away. No time in between to digest, converse with each other or anything. We wanted a nice romantic evening and it ended up being frustrating and far from enjoyable. The service was unacceptable, especially on Valentines Day. Sure it is a busy night but a restaurant should be prepared for that. We had a horrible experience. It was not just the waiter's fault, I'm not blaming anyone specifically, from the moment we walked in it was just not right. The decor and ambiance was nice but that was about all that was positive. My wife's fish was bland and mediocre. I had the $28 bison burger and fries which was just average.
The food was out of this world. The service was horrendous.
The mushroom toast appetizer was eclectic and wonderful. The sauce soaks into the bread perfectly.
The king salmon entree was great as well.
The deer shank and gnocchi was one of the best entrees I have had in Montréal. The meat was cooked perfectly. It was tender and flavorful. The gnocchi was light and the accompanying vegetables went well with the dish.
The chocolate mousse was very good. Light and fluffy.
The toffee and caramel cake was the best dessert I have had in quite some time.
The service left everything to be desired. When we arrived for our reservation on time, we were seated right away. The owner commented that others had shown up an hour early or a half hour late.
Our server quickly took our drink orders and gave us a rundown of the menu. He brought our cocktails very promptly. He took our food order at that time as well. Our server then did not return for over an hour.
He had one other table of 16, which arrived well after we arrived. And that became his singular focus. Waiting on them hand and foot. Refilling water and wine from end to end and starting over again. His beverage station was literally connected to our table. But he never once spoke to us until after the table of 16 received their appetizers and entrees, which arrived before ours.
When our sever finally returned after 75 minutes, he simply picked up the empty cocktails and walked away. I tried to catch his attention to order additional drinks for the table, which annoyed him.
With only the table of 16 still in the restaurant, our entrees arrived 90 minutes into dinner. We asked for a dessert menu soon after. No one came back to take the dessert order.
When we caught the server’s attention, he scolded us for not knowing we were in another server’s section, a server we never saw all night. He tried to get us to take the bill. When we asked to order dessert, he sent the other server, who just laughed it off.
Cozy ambiance, tasty food and a superb martini. Michael, who made the martini was very friendly, professional and nice. Great service. I especially enjoyed the mushroom toasts and deer stew...yummy! I would not hesitate in recommending this place. I had a great evening.
The food at L'Orignal is excellent. I had a cod dish. I think it was cooked within a second of perfection. My wife had the farmer's bowl. The mix of vegetables and the seasoning made for a unique set of tastes and a meal that staunched the appetite without being overly filling. Neither dish relied too much on salt - an annoying habit of many restaurateurs. The atmosphere is sort of a "rustic informal". The music level was a bit much for eating. We were told the sound system was in need of repair. Service sometimes seemed a bit harried, but accommodating and friendly.
It's challenging to characterize this restaurant because it's so remarkable. The farm-to-table fare was of course outstanding; we enjoyed two different kinds of fresh seasonal salads, followed by perfectly prepared lobster fettuccine for one of us and a tender pork chop with sausage and smokey choucroute for the other. It was difficult to find room for dessert, but we couldn't resist sharing an excellent pumpkin tart on a cold, wet fall evening. Beyond solid food, wine, and cocktails, what struck us as unusual was the feeling communicated by the staff in this special place -- of homey hospitality supported by skilled and accommodating service in an environment that is both casual and somehow elegant at the same time. We were touched and delighted by the kind attention of Monika, the restaurant's talented young owner.
Everything was delicious. We started with the gravlax appetizer which was a cut above the traditional smoked salmon. Our entrees included trout which my husband happily devoured; I had the quail special which was delightful. The recommended wine paring worked well for both entrees. We did not have time for dessert and coffee but think it would have not disappointed. Will return when back in Montreal.
