L'Orignal Ratings and Reviews
The food at L'Orignal is excellent. I had a cod dish. I think it was cooked within a second of perfection. My wife had the farmer's bowl. The mix of vegetables and the seasoning made for a unique set of tastes and a meal that staunched the appetite without being overly filling. Neither dish relied too much on salt - an annoying habit of many restaurateurs. The atmosphere is sort of a "rustic informal". The music level was a bit much for eating. We were told the sound system was in need of repair. Service sometimes seemed a bit harried, but accommodating and friendly.
It's challenging to characterize this restaurant because it's so remarkable. The farm-to-table fare was of course outstanding; we enjoyed two different kinds of fresh seasonal salads, followed by perfectly prepared lobster fettuccine for one of us and a tender pork chop with sausage and smokey choucroute for the other. It was difficult to find room for dessert, but we couldn't resist sharing an excellent pumpkin tart on a cold, wet fall evening. Beyond solid food, wine, and cocktails, what struck us as unusual was the feeling communicated by the staff in this special place -- of homey hospitality supported by skilled and accommodating service in an environment that is both casual and somehow elegant at the same time. We were touched and delighted by the kind attention of Monika, the restaurant's talented young owner.
Everything was delicious. We started with the gravlax appetizer which was a cut above the traditional smoked salmon. Our entrees included trout which my husband happily devoured; I had the quail special which was delightful. The recommended wine paring worked well for both entrees. We did not have time for dessert and coffee but think it would have not disappointed. Will return when back in Montreal.
Lived in Montreal for over 10 years and this is one of my favourite restaurants. Consistently great service and excellent food; the latter is based on an ever changing menu that reflects the season. Desserts are always, always to die for. Cute decor and ambiance. It was my husband's birthday and they gave us a free maple whiskey shots!
The service was very poor. We got there 30 minutes early but they were not ready so we went for a drink and then came back. We still had to wait 25 minutes to be seated. We chose a wine 10 minutes later we were told they did not have it. We picked an alternate and ordered the beef carpaccio appetizer and the hunters rabbit and risotto. The appetizer took a while to come out but when it did it was very good. After we finished the carpaccio 45 minutes later our entrees had not come out nearly 2 hours after our reservation. The table next to us was seated after us received there wine right away, their entrees and were finishing their desserts. The table next to them which was larger and seated after us received their appetizers and entrees. The waitress seemed to avoid us so we could not catch her eye. Finally we got up and the host came over and the entrees miraculously appeared. We were convinced to stay. The rabbit was delicious though not hot and the wild mushroom risotto was hot and tasty. The host did adjust our bill because of the poor service but unfortunately although the food was excellent, service is an important part of dining out. We were in Montreal for 3 nights had the service been better it would have been our best meal.
The reviews on Yelp don't lie, food takes forever to come out! And when it finally did, it was almost cold. So by the time I finished my $105 TBone steak, it was cold and gross. I only mention the price because it blew us away, considering it was well over double any other meals on the menu (not much of a special...). We went here on a whim, ignoring the Yelp reviews... Yelp does NOT lie! I do not recommend.
Decided to try this gem after seeing so many positive reviews online. The cocktails were carefully crafted, service was impeccable, food was absolutely delicious and the portions were quite sizeable. My girlfriend and I really appreciated this resto and the people who work in it. We will most definitely be back.
Honestly, I was quite disappointed with the food experience at L'Orignal. The reviews on Yelp looked great, but I am not sure I share the same sentiments.
We were a party of five, including three friends who went to college together some 30 years ago plus two teenagers. For appetizers, we ordered the bone marrow and a dozen oysters. Nothing special there. Three of us had the bison burger for our main course. I have to say that I expected more of the burger? It tasted just like any other burger. My daughter had the lobster fettucine and said that she enjoyed it. My son had the risotto.
What was really annoying was when the hostess came over to our table after we had paid the bill. She said that there's a party of six who just came in without reservations. Could we give them the table but no hurries. What?!? I felt that was bad customer service.
Discovered the restaurant from an episode of Day of Gluttony. The show featured 24 Montreal restaurants, and this one seemed the most to our liking based on the menu and look of the place. It did not disappoint. We tried a few different dishes, as well as cocktails, all amazing. I make an effort to always try new restaurants when visiting Montreal, but I expect I'll be coming back to this one often.
