A hidden gem. Great food, great people. Highly recommend.
Everything was outstanding. Would recommend for a first date.
Had a rather nice experience at L'Orignal. To start with, the ambience of the place is great. It's dark, but a little rustic, it has a pleasant smell and candles lit near the entrance. We were promptly greeted by the host who confirmed our reservations, and seated just as fast.
The service was great, too. Our host and waitress were both very attentive to our needs, but didn't rush us either. The wait for our food was not terribly long - not terribly quick, either, but at a restaurant such as this you probably wouldn't want your dish to be rushed anyway!
I had the Rabbit Two Ways, and my friend had the Deer Shank Stew. We both enjoyed our meals highly, nothing was overdone or undercooked, and the flavors were incredible.
All in all, a very great find, just make sure to book your reservation before coming!
L'Orignal was a treat in the heart of Old Montreal. We were welcomed immediately and had a wonderful dining experience. Kyle, our waiter was great! Had truffle poutine for an appetizer then pork and beef dishes . All were delicious!
Accompanied by Aperol spritz and chardonnay made dinner complete.
L'Orignal is a few steps down from the street, but a huge step up in local cuisine! Cozy atmosphere and local-sourced, our dinner was comfortable but creative. Service friendly and professional. )Waiter gorgeous. Loved the French Kiss cocktail. My warm beet starter was served with goat cheese and pistachio, and another mystery ingredient on the bottom that I could not identify, but loved. My husband's green salad was anything but plain. In fact, both salads were HUGE, forcing us to cram our entree because it was also delicious and extremely generous. I had the cauliflower 'steak' but it was more like a head of flash-fried cauliflower with Brussels sprouts and lentils- absolutely delicious, and filling for a veggie plate. Husband had the pork schnitzel - best ever, from anywhere, including Germany. No room for dessert but we waddled back to our hotel very satisfied to have discovered this gem in the Vieux.
The food was delicious and the decor very fun: a true Canadian cabin in the woods! The pine scent at the entrance and in the dining room was a bit too much though and altered a bit my perception of the food. I had the warm beet and goat cheese appetizer, which was delicious, as well as a risotto with mushrooms and prawns which was also very taseful and well prepared. The only downside was the length of the service betwwen the appetizer and the main course. However, as an appology, our waiter offered us a complementary dessert (the apple tart was a treat!). Overall, I had a great time!
Merci pour tous les bons moments passés à votre resto. Merci Debbie. Ça reste mon resto chouchou
The service was bad. Sadly, our waiter was loud, didn’t know his wine or his manners, and rushed us out. It was a long awaited date night with my husband, and sadly, left us wanting another night. The food was average, and we might have gone back if the service was better. Oh well...
Such an amazing restaurant with a perfect atmosphere and the food was incredible.
Wonderful wine selection and the cocktails were perfect!
Sadly disappointing. Despite making a reservation, we waited to be seated, and at very poorly located seats. Food was decent, but quite salty. Waiters were not very attentive, and overall I was not overly impressed. Not a place to go for an intimate dinner.
Overall very good but first thing waitress told us is that we need to order soon cause she was expecting large group in 10 min. Felt like leaving , not very good for first time experience there and for Old Montreal....
Warm, north woods “cabin” atmosphere with a modern approach to Québécois dining. Food was wonderful and would definitely come again.
We had a wonderful dinner at L'Orignal. I had friends visiting from Sweden so I thought it would be nice to try some real Québécois fare. They loved the meal as did I. Our waiter recommended an excellent Canadian wine. All in all, a great evening.
Best Poutine in Montreal!
Met the chef the night before, and wow were we glad he recommended we come to L'Orignal for dinner the next evening! We had local wine, shared several appetizers, and two main courses (shared by 3 adults). ORDER THE RABBIT! You can't get enough of the sauce. The ambiance was cozy and unique.
Deer stew was very disappointing - lacked salt and had not been cooked long enough to develop flavours. Vegetables were raw.
Sticky toffee pudding was very good - service was excellent.
We chose this restaurant on a whim, and I am so glad we did. The food was absolutely delicious, as were the cocktails. Excellent atmosphere as well.
Wonderful in every way-- food, service, ambience. Creative, imaginative, but not "over the top." Highly recommended!
We all had a wonderful meal, there were 6 of us. Everyone enjoyed their meals from bone marrow appetizer to crab legs to rabbit done two ways. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. It is quite expensive but the portions for most meals are generous.
Best restaurant on the planet.
Second time at L’Orignal in a week. The food is outstanding especially the mushroom toast. Maybe best dish in Montreal. I had the deer stew last night and it was the most flavourful deer I have ever eaten. The waitress Debbie was delightful and took amazing care of us.
Great, hearty, old-fashioned food. Awesome bloody mary. Fun ambiance, especially for a half-basement location. Attentive service.
It was Valentines Day. Our first time trying L'Orignal. 8:00pm reservation made on opentable was not honored. We were seated at 8:25. We were offered drinks or water while we waited but these were not complimentary. We were seated in a table all the way in the back right next to a heater blowing constant hot air the entire night. We sat for another 20 minutes without being noticed by anyone. Finally a waiter comes and asks if we're ready to order. He did not go over the menu, he did not go over specials or anything, we had to ask him to do it. We waited another 25 minutes for our appetizers (a soup and a salmon tartar) at which point the waiter apologized for the delay and brought us a free round of drinks. The waiter apologized by saying "we aren't used to this many 2 person tables". It was Valentines day, what did they expect? 5 minutes after we finished appetizers, the main course came out. Immediately as we were done a busboy began clearing the table, the waiter came back again while the busboy was cleaning to ask us if we wanted dessert. No space or break in between, the busboy was still cleaning as the waiter was going over dessert. We said no to dessert and he brought the bill right away. No time in between to digest, converse with each other or anything. We wanted a nice romantic evening and it ended up being frustrating and far from enjoyable. The service was unacceptable, especially on Valentines Day. Sure it is a busy night but a restaurant should be prepared for that. We had a horrible experience. It was not just the waiter's fault, I'm not blaming anyone specifically, from the moment we walked in it was just not right. The decor and ambiance was nice but that was about all that was positive. My wife's fish was bland and mediocre. I had the $28 bison burger and fries which was just average.
Food was great but service was kind of slow, not as attentive as I would expect for the type of place.
The food was out of this world. The service was horrendous.
The mushroom toast appetizer was eclectic and wonderful. The sauce soaks into the bread perfectly.
The king salmon entree was great as well.
The deer shank and gnocchi was one of the best entrees I have had in Montréal. The meat was cooked perfectly. It was tender and flavorful. The gnocchi was light and the accompanying vegetables went well with the dish.
The chocolate mousse was very good. Light and fluffy.
The toffee and caramel cake was the best dessert I have had in quite some time.
The service left everything to be desired. When we arrived for our reservation on time, we were seated right away. The owner commented that others had shown up an hour early or a half hour late.
Our server quickly took our drink orders and gave us a rundown of the menu. He brought our cocktails very promptly. He took our food order at that time as well. Our server then did not return for over an hour.
He had one other table of 16, which arrived well after we arrived. And that became his singular focus. Waiting on them hand and foot. Refilling water and wine from end to end and starting over again. His beverage station was literally connected to our table. But he never once spoke to us until after the table of 16 received their appetizers and entrees, which arrived before ours.
When our sever finally returned after 75 minutes, he simply picked up the empty cocktails and walked away. I tried to catch his attention to order additional drinks for the table, which annoyed him.
With only the table of 16 still in the restaurant, our entrees arrived 90 minutes into dinner. We asked for a dessert menu soon after. No one came back to take the dessert order.
When we caught the server’s attention, he scolded us for not knowing we were in another server’s section, a server we never saw all night. He tried to get us to take the bill. When we asked to order dessert, he sent the other server, who just laughed it off.
Food was very good. Service could have been better. My wife finished her first glass of wine and would have liked another but the waitress stopped coming by until it was time to order dessert.
Fantastic food, wonderful wine selected for us and just an all around delight.
Visiting from the states and had a wonderful experience! Our waiter was fantastic and had excellent suggestions!
Amazing place and phenomenal service. Our waiter was from Indiana but has lived in Montreal for 10 years. Extremely knowledgable and just all around great experience
Québécois food in a simple, warm setting. We had a relaxed and casual meal, ate yummy and unique food, and got a real feel for Montreal.
It feels like a best kept secret when you arrive at your best friend-'s
Used to be really good. Very disappointed with the food and wine especially for the price. A shame.
Cozy ambiance, tasty food and a superb martini. Michael, who made the martini was very friendly, professional and nice. Great service. I especially enjoyed the mushroom toasts and deer stew...yummy! I would not hesitate in recommending this place. I had a great evening.
Great, cozy hunting lodge decor!
The bidon burger was very good. Sat at the bar and chatted with Michael, a co-owner. Nice guy!
Will definitely return.
Quaint atmosphere and decor.
Very good food.
Service was very friendly and on point.
Great meal - quality ingredients well prepared. Great ambiance and service.
