Perched within the historic Compton Abbas Airfield, Lore of the Sky is a bold new smokehouse restaurant from Guy Ritchie’s team.

Set in the heart of Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this is where aviation heritage meets Texas-style barbecue. Whether you’re watching vintage Spitfires take flight or soaking in the panoramic views over Shaftesbury, Lore of the Sky offers an unforgettable dining experience and less than an hour from the Jurassic Coast.

Our menu is a celebration of deep flavour and smokehouse tradition. Crafted by Head Chef Alex Brown, each dish—from oak-smoked pork belly to loaded nachos and rich jackfruit burgers—is smoked on-site using the legendary J&R Oyler Smoker, the first of its kind in the UK.

Very good menu and food was well presented, and very good. My only criticism would be that the web site states a dress code so we changed and arrived accordingly. This needs to be removed or upheld as we felt overdressed. It seems it doesn’t matter what you wear. The service was excellent with lovely smiling staff very happy to help. Overall 9/10 and very good.

The location is really fun. The service was excellent. For the UK, the BBQ was really great and enjoyable. I was raised and lived in Texas until after Uni. This is really not Texas BBQ. It is probably too hard to replicate the real thing 4,000 miles away. This is not to be negative at all, the bbq was very good and I really enjoyed it. I had the pulled beef brisket sandwich. It was good and I will get it again (maybe with some jalapeño slices). My wife had the pulled pork sandwich and that was really good. We also had a side of the pork belly burnt ends. They tasted good but were a million miles from what you would get at a Texas bbq joint. The food was a bit flashier and stylish than what I am used to for BBQ. Inside, there were several well behaved dogs and the kids were well behaved. I am not used to a restaurant in Dorset that does not have screaming kids running all over the place, so this was a really nice treat. There were also lots of upscale motorcyclists there and that was nice too. We went on a Wednesday afternoon with reservations and it was perfect, I now would like to get reservations on a weekend when more antique airplanes fly in.

The location is just superb. The views across the countryside are just outstanding. The airfield is busy with regular small planes taking off and landing Food, superb. Simple and well done! The Beers & Ciders again great. But don't expect the branded ones. It's all craft by their own brewery. They only dropped points on service. Yes it was busy. But no management of timings for our information. When asked about our drinks after 20mins the answer was dismissive and pretty uncaring. How ever from there on it was ok. But some additional training or better management would be recommended.

Had low expectations given recent reviews. Wait staff need some training and there needs to be more of them to provide decent attentive service. BBQ food was sadly inferior to those BBQ joints I've been to in USA despite the excellent smoker outside. Mac n cheese was bland. Burnt ends were not crispy. Chicken was moist but only slightest smokey taste.

This is the second time we’ve eaten here. The first for lunch. The slow cooked beef was overcooked and very dry. The rest lacked flavour. Breakfast was ok. But no tomatoes. With such a limited menu and tomato season difficult to see why. Unremarkable to poor so far. All the people working there seem to be lovely and trying very hard

Very pleasant experience with very good staff. However food was only fair. Pulled beef was warm, very dry and chewy, bun was dry and coleslaw was not creamy. Sauce and mayo did little to improve. Chips were excellent. Good portions but lacked expected restaurant quality and taste. Desert of chocolate cake was same, very very dry even with the chocolate topping. Only reasonable to eat because we had ice cream with it as an extra. Not worth the trip if we address food only. Planes were very interesting.

Our experience was very different to the previous time we visited - the pork was definitely not ‘pulled’ - the service whilst a bit quirky was to be honest a little bit odd ! No body seemed to know anything

We went as my husband is in to smoking (food!) and weren’t disappointed. Good menu and excellent food in lovely surroundings. Lovely, accommodating staff, lovely clean toilets (always important!) and well spaced tables in the restaurant, so you didn’t feel as you do in some places that you’re sitting nigh on on top of the next table. Table service indoors too, which isn’t always the case these days, so another 10/10 there. The whole restaurant area is glass windows looking out on to the airstrip, giving great views of incoming and out going light aircraft. We were lucky enough to be by the window, but you could see the comings and going from wherever you were seated. Also several tables outside (‘buzzer service’ outside) where you can eat, or just sit and have a drink and watch the planes or admire the view of Shaftesbury. We travelled 2.10mis to get there and weren’t disappointed! We’ll be back 😊

First time visit. Simple menu, but lots of flavour. The bbq/smoke made the bely port render nicely so very enjoyable. Nice layout with lots of space and good view of the comings and goings of aeroplanes. Will definitely be back!
