About this restaurant

  • Great for scenic views
  • Dog-friendly
  • Good for groups
Perched within the historic Compton Abbas Airfield, Lore of the Sky is a bold new smokehouse restaurant from Guy Ritchie’s team.

Set in the heart of Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this is where aviation heritage meets Texas-style barbecue. Whether you’re watching vintage Spitfires take flight or soaking in the panoramic views over Shaftesbury, Lore of the Sky offers an unforgettable dining experience and less than an hour from the Jurassic Coast.

Our menu is a celebration of deep flavour and smokehouse tradition. Crafted by Head Chef Alex Brown, each dish—from oak-smoked pork belly to loaded nachos and rich jackfruit burgers—is smoked on-site using the legendary J&R Oyler Smoker, the first of its kind in the UK.

With every bite, you’ll taste our commitment to quality, locally sourced ingredients, and fire-powered finesse.

Lore of the Sky offers an "incredible location" with stunning airfield views, perfect for plane enthusiasts. The "staff are friendly" and provide attentive service. While the menu is limited, the "pulled pork burgers and fries are divine." It's a great place for a unique dining experience, especially if you enjoy watching small aircraft.

I’ve written a review which mysteriously vanished when I clicked on ‘private note’ part. Disappointing. Staff were great. Food was terrible. Chicken legs were miniscule. Ceaser salad hid huge rock hard bread squares in it. Tiny amount of sauce. Wrong lettuce. Pork bun was pretty dry. Amount of sauce considering it was supposed to be Deep South or Texan - where having spent a huge amount of time there I would suggest the amount of sauce and flavour would be much more. The service was pretty chaotic and NOT the fault of the staff, who were all charming and doing their very best. We missed the gritchie bitter and I would suggest the old menu was better. We will however, probably try again on a different day.

Food a total let down having expected a Texan BBQ style flavour and spread. Basically a mediocre burger canteen with about 6 dishes all lacklustre with no incling that they might have been anywhere near a smoker; inedible „slaw“ greasy fries, grey buns, mac n cheese not available, may be thankfully. Only saving grace was the location- amazing views and small aircraft to watch.

Incredible location, great fun watching the little planes take off & land. Superb atmosphere and friendly staff. The lunch menu choice is a little limited but the food is delicious and plentiful. Nice seating area outside for when the weather is good. We’ll definitely come again.

Great location and plane viewing, and really good ambience and noise levels given how busy it was at lunchtime on a Sunday. The food was good, but not incredible and not worth the prices. We love the concept and would definitely take friends if we felt it was better value for money and some healthier options were added to the menu.

Not a good smokehouse. Food tasted like it had barely touched smoke and was not tender or juicy. Gorgeous spot though and lovely staff.

Great setting. I had the pork belly which hadn't been rendered down enough & seeming it was stated it had been smoked for 8hrs, you wouldn't have know it. Hope it gets better but wounder if it's just another celebrity putting their name to something without bothering to refine the details

Great place to visit and we were made to feel very welcome. Menu is limited and at the expensive end of the range for what’s on offer.
