Award-winning chef and restaurateur Michael Scelfo's Longfellow Bar at Alden & Harlow is a neighborhood bar and restaurant located in the historic Café Algiers space directly above his flagship restaurant at 40 Brattle Street in Harvard Square. The food and drinks at The Longfellow Bar continue to explore Chef Scelfo’s forward-thinking approach to experiencing a meal around his kitchen counter. The menu features bar food that is intended to be passed and shared, allowing guests the opportunity to become immersed in a relaxed and tactile approach to eating; they’re encouraged to break bread and get their hands messy. Rooted in genuine hospitality and exceptional cocktails, the bar program follows Chef Scelfo’s ethos of taking simple ingredients and transforming them, incorporating unique flavors and textures.

Great food and drinks. The service started out great, but by the end of our dinner, we were sitting with empty plates and glasses for way too long. We wanted to order more but after all that waiting we decided it would better to head somewhere else. And when I say we waited too long, it was a good fifteen to twenty minutes of waiting.

They don't give you silverware, because all the dishes can be eaten with just your fingers (but you can ask for silverware if you desire). I went there to try their version of Rellenong Hipon. I wasn't disappointed; definitely my favorite dish of the night. Great, honest service from Wellington who didn't steer us wrong.

I came for dinner on a Tuesday night and had a great time. We sat upstairs (such a gorgeous space!), drank delicious cocktails (my personal favorite was a gin drink made with peas—sorry I forget the name), and had great food...I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a pretzel so much! Plus all of the staff was so welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. Longfellow is a great place and I hope to come back soon.

Fun place for creative drinks - knowledgeable wait staff - eager to tell you all about the complex drinks. A bit loud at times, so not a place for intimate conversation.

We were celebrating our friend's birthday and we all had a great time. The only reason wrote 4 instant of 5 stars was because people didn't love their drinks. I had the dirty martini which I really enjoyed but 3 of the 5 of us were more experimental and none of them were really happy.

Have been to their other sister restaurants and food great. Very surprised on the outcome of this dinner. We were a party of 5 and everyone had poorly prepared food, very salty, and even a simple hamburger arrived over salted and very well done (ordered medium). Server never returned to take new drink orders until well into our meal. I would only return for drinks for bar is really great and so are cocktails. I assume kinks will be worked out based on the success of the other establishments. But for now, not a great experience.

The menu is impossible to understand. Every item has a strange word - even the bread, which came with ‘koji butter’.

I was impressed with the truly team approach to the services. Anyone who walked by and saw an empty plate or an empty water glass on our table jumped in to attend to it. And, they actually paid attention to my indication in OpenTable that we were there celebrating my birthday. They surprised us with a complimentary dessert with a candle. I can't remember the last time a restaurant extended a gesture like that. Outstanding!!

Drinks were very good but food options were pretty severely limited, especially for vegetarians; I'm not sure if there was anything at all appropriate for vegans. Meeting a friend at the bar for a drink and then heading downstairs to Alden & Harlow for dinner is probably your best bet.

Amazing, creative small plates and fun cocktails! I’d recommend asking to be seated at the bar or upstairs on the 2nd floor. We got seated on the 1st floor right in front of the air conditioning vent and were absolutely freezing!!! We asked them to turn it down but they couldn’t do that much since they said it gets really hot on the first floor. Wish we had known in advance!

Service was great, cocktails very good; prices low/moderate for the quality and service. My only criticism was that we ordered a hamburger cooked "medium" and it was rare, not even medium-rare. However, they acknowledged it readily and took it off the bill, so I certainly felt very good about their response and overall quality. All other dishes were excellent. Some plates are smaller tapas-style, some are a full meal, so that's worth checking when ordering - we had way more food than we expected! Noise level is very high, but many people seem to like restaurants that way. Make a reservation, it's busy and popular.

Fabulous new craft cocktail bar in a beautifully refurbished space. Cocktails tend towards edgy/bitter, but the bartenders are on their game and can make you a beautiful version of anything you can name off the menu.

Worth it for the drinks and ambience, but do not eat dinner here. The food had too much garlic and salt, some of which was inedible. The best thing we ate was the homemade bread and butter. The burger meat was too spiced and the tuna crudo was so salty that it tasted like nothing else. But great cocktails and wine! And great space.

Alden and Harlow is my favorite restaurant and so I was very excited to try Longfellow! The food was delicious. I love the concept of finger food and it was delicious. I highly enjoyed that they gave you wet naps to clean your fingers at the table. The drinks were just...ok. Which was disappointing because the cocktails downstairs are just so good.

Food and drinks are excellent. The space itself is very attractive. Service is excellent, with one caveat that is out of the servers' control. The big issue I have is the place is too crowded. The lower floor is packed and extremely noisy, and the upper floor is also crowded though less noisy. This adds up to making it rather unpleasant sitting at most of the low-top tables across from the bar. There are some many people waiting without seats who end up standing over the diners. Sitting at the bar is much better. They should switch to high-top seating across from the bars. the other problem is that there are so many people standing and just drinking that the bartenders are really backed up and it takes forever to get your drink even if you're sitting at the bar.

This was a birthday luncheon. My guest likes the food at Alden and Harlow, so this was a chance for her to try some other dishes. We were fortunate to have the same wonderful server who helped me the last time I had lunch here. I was happily surprised when she remembered that I had been there before. She did a great job of describing several dishes on the menu, all of which we decided to try and greatly enjoyed. As before, the service was wonderful and we had a delightful time. This time we sat downstairs on a cold day. If possible, sit upstairs. The cold draft from the door opening and closing added a chill that made the environment less than perfect.

As much as I wanted to like Longfellow, the menu was too complicated to understand (how does it take a phD to understand that their pretzel comes with pub cheese and pickles?!) and the drinks were good, but nothing special. Additionally, the bar staff was super nice, but not very attentive. Wouldn't not come here again, although wouldn't be all that excited to either.

For me the food was way over enigneered, too many ingredients and lacking real flavor. It was really crowded and loud. The food is made to be bite size so silverware is on request so it was kind of messy. Not my type of restaurant.

Food was great including the pretzel which could have been the best one I've ever had. Fries are excellent. Their oatmeal sandwich dessert is the best version that Little Debbie treat will never be. Our table was not. I was bumped by every single patron that walked behind us. The staff appeared to know that they had to turn sideways to pass through. Would go back but will ensure I do not sit at the same table.

The space is really cool, they kept the original walls and the ceiling. I liked their drinks a lot, super creative cocktails, however, there are 0 healthy options. They were clear that this is bar food but throw a salad in there, because one can only eat so many fries and wings.

By now I’ve tried four of the cocktails from their menu. All of them had something a bit off... one tasted like toothpaste, the other was overly sweet, etc. I was beginning to think that maybe I don’t actually like cocktails, but a visit to a different nearby cocktail bar cleared that up — the cocktails at Longfellow are just not good. The burgers were delicious, but I’m not sure why they took 40 minutes when hardly anyone else was in the restaurant. That said, the space itself is beautiful, and I could definitely see myself spending a lot of time here if the execution were better!

This was a friend's luncheon to celebrate Valentine's Day. None of us had been to Longfellow before but we all had been to Alden & Harlow and liked that restaurant very much. The space has been beautifully redecorated from its incarnation as the Algiers coffee shop. It's more of a bar than a restaurant for lunch. The menu choices are quite limited, but if you like the Secret Burger at Alden & Harlow, you'll be glad to see you have two similar choices here. Many of the menu items are like small appetizers for having wine or cocktails during the mid-afternoon or early evening. My guests had the deviled eggs and pronounced them to be excellent. The only surprise was that there's no espresso machine. So you need to have regular coffee if that's what you like. The service was awesome. Our server in the upstairs bar area couldn't do enough for us, and others kept checking on us. The place was pretty empty, which made it better for quiet conversation. Check it out when you want a light lunch or a drink and a snack.
