L'Olivier Houston Ratings and Reviews
This place is really a bit of a joke as a restaurant. My girlfriend and I ordered 2 appetizers a piece and it took over an hour and a half. This was on a Friday night at 6:30 and only one other table occupied in the whole restaurant. We missed a show we were going to. The food was not good. I had onion soup that was sub par and we both had grilled octopus that was really charred/burnt octopus. I can not recommend this place at all. One of the saddest dining experience I have ever had.
Great service and food from Chef Olivier. Attention to detail and great food assured a great evening as my wife and I celebrated our anniversary.
The restaurant is cozy but modern and clean.
The cocktails were perfect, and he helped my wife pick out a wine she loved.
The food was amazing - the escargot was fantastic and authentic. Then we dove into our entrees - the steak was cooked perfectly and the frites had a nice kick to them which was unexpected but great, and my Scallops were some of the best I’ve ever had.
We will be back, and I Recommend you give it a try!
Atmosphere was amazing, food delicious. Had eight courses tasting menu with wine pairing, it was outstanding!! Don’t even have any favorite dish, each of them was very good and different. Will definitely come back to try some other things on the menu. Chef Olivier was very attentive, he did lots of personal interaction with guests. Learned some interesting things about wines. Excellent experience!!! Thank you Olivier!
When we made this reservation, we did not realize we would be the only people in the restaurant! What a great experience! The waiter/chef was attentive without hovering and was very good about describing the dishes on the menu. The food was excellent! The lobster bisque was truly original and outstanding. The chateaubriand was prepared perfectly and the cauliflower au gratin was also very tasty.
While not having the appearance of a fine French restaurant, there is no question that the food at L'Olivier is as good or better than any other restaurant in Houston.
We booked this restaurant at the last moment. When we walked in there was only 1 table full and we wondered why no one was there. After eating, we wondered why no one was there. The food was delicious. We started with several appetizer, house made smooth pate, dumplings in a truffle fennel sauce, grilled foix gras, then we had the bone marrow that you put on top of melted brie, deliciousness. For our entries, my wife and I shared the lamb chops which were grilled on one side to a medium rare. My friend and his wife had a perfectly grilled steak and a scallops and risotto dish. For desert we had the spoke tart, saffron pear, and the chocolate mousse. The wine was decantered before our meal so it was appropriately aired. If you are looking for excellent food. This is a great place in Houston.
Great French Bistro restaurant near the downtown end of Westheimer. Nice atmosphere with a great wine list and specialty cocktails. We had the in house made Chicken Pate served with toast points as well as a cheese selection. Requested more bread and received authentic warm French rolls with butter. We ordered the lamp chop special and the mussels in a wonderful broth that we used the French bread to dip in. We also chose a dessert selection each that was fresh and tasty.
We highly recommend this restaurant and it is a hidden gem! Lots of things on the menu we can't wait to try on our next visit.
We were in town to visit our daughter for family weekend at Rice and dinned with Olivier. Dinner was amazing, the wait staff attentive and the experience memorable. Chief Olivier explained everything he prepared for us (probably because it was a light evening due to the World Series). We couldn’t have enjoyed our meal more and plan to return when we are back in town for graduation.
L’olivier is a wonderful, fresh, friendly, special place to dine. Quiet with tons of ambiance, the host and bartender was engaging without being intrusive. The chef made a special effort to discuss the menu and specials with each table and to visit and check back on the preparation. The food was marvelous. Shrimp with curry tagliatelle was perfect. Not overwhelmed, you could take the large shrimp and delicate pasta. The lamp chop special as well as lobster bisque were stupendous. Again flavors abound but not any to overwhelm the whole dish. Interesting menu, plenty of options, great food with fantastic service. Definitely a new favorite for us!
This was a pleasant surprise. We ended up in the bar eating a combination bar menu/hh and regular featured dishes. The oysters were sublime, east coast accompanied by a great mignonette. Their by the glass sparkling is very nice. We had a few of the hh apps and the avo pancake with smoked salmon was amazing. I could have had a 1/2 dozen. My husband had the carpaccio and it was very different and modern with a touch of plum sauce for sweetness. I had a small serving of mussels (which was in fact quite large) in the best broth I have had in some time, and I was just in Brittany, so that’s saying something. My husband had the truffled pasta and it was just a perfect portion and wel seasoned. Very nicely presented. We ended with apple tart and coffee, just right after sampling a variety of menu items. I hate to say this but we stayed in the bar to watch the Astros game, instead of moving into the dining room for our main meal. It was pretty quiet since we came early and meandered through their menu. Next time, we will come for one of the tasting menus and really take advantage of the chef’s talents which are considerable. A very lovely and quiet evening in a comfortable atmosphere. You can actually hear the person next to you and enjoy great food here! Merci Chef Olivier-
Went there for our anniversary. Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. Chef Olivier suggested every meal from appetizers, main dish, dessert and drinks. He delivered every single dish. This was one of the best dining experiences we have ever had. The food is amazing and Chef Olivier made our anniversary special.
The Rack of Lamb is excellent. I would put it up against any restaurant in Houston. Chef
Olivier very graciously gave suggestions for a great Vouvray wine from France. Next time
I eat at L'Olivier's I will order a bottle instead of glasses of the wine because it was so nice.
We have such a lovely anniversary dinner on Saturday night. The food was divine - we had the filet of beef and the curry tagliatelle with shrimp for entrees. The curry sauce was perfectly spicy-sweet. We had the Mary's Salad and a burrata special for starters and the poached pear dessert. The service was very attentive and pleasant. I will be back!
This is one of my favorite restaurants, L'Olivier's has excellent cuisine. Have never had a lunch or dinner that was not superb. Olivier has the BEST pate' and homemade fresh every day.
There is no item listed on the menu I would not recommend; they are all great tasting. The chateaubriand for two is an excellent choice and Olivier has a wonderful wine/champagne selection. Especially like his chocolate mousse and apple tart.
My family and I ate at L'Olivier for my birthday meal. The restaurant gave us extra attention with a visit from the chef and recommendation for wine. The chef is very French and very talented. Our food was delicious. My husband had a pork chop that was perfectly cooked and very tender. My daughter had succulent scallops with risotto and I had a shrimp curry pasta that was light and delicious. We concluded our meal with chocolate mousse that was decadent but not too heavy. Our waitress was also a lovely person and made sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend.
Chef Olivier never fails to impress with his blend of authentic French classics (the short ribs sous vide are my favorite) and creative specials (this time, I ordered the appetizer of melt-in-your-mouth burrata with pickled grapes). He always chats with his diners and makes impeccable suggestions from his extensive wine list.
The food is amazing. The chef came out to see if we had any questions and later followed up to see how dinner was. The only reason for an overall 3 is that the service from our waitress was sub par. It took forever to order. She didn't inform a friend upon ordering the chicken that it takes longer. She waited until we'd been sitting around for 20 mins. Then she disappeared and I had to find her to get out check.
But don't not go based on our service, bc really the food is soooo good.
I think that this restaurant on the night I visited was woefully struggling to be top notch in spite of being undermanned. The food was good, not great, service was good ,not great. The price was right. Also, for a sat pm they had few diners and probably not much turnover. I'm certain that they could have done a first rate French restaurant job.
We had a wonderful evening with the attentive staff. The chef came to our table and explained the menu when we asked and made his suggestions for the evening meal which was delicious. Our waiter helped us with wine pairings for each course which was appreciated. Extensive wine selection by the way. Great modern feel to the place.
There is a cozy patio where smoking is allowed as well where we enjoyed dessert.
I took the family here for their Easter buffet. I had visions of a grand French display like La Table. While the quality was good, I was disappointed with the variety: prime rib, shrimp, eggs, potato, salad. Ho hum. For $55 it was unimpressive. Next year, we're going to La Table for $59.
Great place for a nice dinner with your spouse or small group of friends. My wife and I were celebrating our Anniversary and they even add a nice message to our desert plate.
Chef came to out table and talked us through the menu and made a couple of suggestion for my wife.
We decided to go out last minute on a Friday night and L'Olivier was one of a few restaurants that had reservations available. Now I see why. There was no host/ess and only two servers (one of which was also the bartender). There were only a handful of patrons but it still took almost two hours to get through dinner. It was obvious that the water pitcher had been sitting in the fridge for a while as it tasted like whatever else was in the fridge (although they did replace with fresh water upon request). It appears that a lot of the cold food was prepared ahead of time and refrigerated. Most of the food was sub-par. The only positive thing I can say is that my fish tasted relatively fresh. It appears that this restaurant is on its way out. It's unfortunate because I feel like it does have potential.
Olivier is a wonderful chef. We were a group of six. Most had fish, salmon, durad and bronzino...excellent. We also enjoyed the risotto, brussel sprouts and saffron potatoes. Ended the evening with a desert that Olivier's grandmother made for him every Sunday. It was called Floating something... All was so good and Olivier has a cute personality too!!
The restaurant is lovely and the service very friendly and helpful. We shared a duck pate and it was lovely as were our wine glasses. The waiter chose a red wine for my husband that was very good. My bushland thought his duck confit was dry. My short ribs could have been tastier. The Apple tart was a great ending. I was a bit put out that the chef came to every table except ours. Was it because we were elderly or was he just thoughtless. We certainly spent enough money.
The food is good, if overpriced. Some of the traditional dishes weren't quite traditional in preparation, but they were still good. The service was poor and the ambiance left something to be desired (the decor couldn't seem to decide what it wanted to be), but they may have been having an off-night.
