We came for the Thanksgiving buffet. The service was definitely not up to par. We waited forever to get our drinks refilled, dirty plates removed and our bill. Then they ran our bill wrong so they called us later for our card to run again. I will be keeping an eye on that for sure! The food was just OK. For $80 per person I expected more. Very disappointed
We had the Thanksgiving Day buffet here this year and I’m so glad that we did. We were seated in the fabulous Empire Room for our 11:00am reservation.
We enjoyed very good food + champaign, attentive service, beautiful decor, lovely music (harpist) and convenient location.
It’s not cheap—$80 per person—so bring your appetite. It’s worth it!
I look forward to coming back and having a fancy cocktail at the bar in the gorgeous 2nd floor Palmer House hotel lobby while the holiday decorations are still on display.
My sister and I had afternoon tea at the Palmer House . We made reservations and at the time they asked if anyone was allergic to anything. When we arrived they had prepared my sister a separate plate which made it much easier to enjoy ourselves. The tea was excellent, the food very tasty and the service was superior. Our attendant, Christina, was the icing on the cake. She was knowledgeable about the hotel and made our outing very enjoyable.
Unfortunately, the tea service service for which my wife and daughter traveled to the city by train, ended up a being a disappointment. My wife reported that $45.00 per person was wasn't worth the service received nor the quality of food. The waiter was absolutely horrible. No interaction with my daughter who's first time at high tea should have been a special event. She actually cried because her feelings were hurt. She was ignored. No instructions given, no presentation, no interaction as to what having high tea was about...plus, the waiter was ridiculously slow. It was not very busy, so no excuse.
The food...The finger sandwiches had hardly anything on them! Like the restaurant was trying to cut costs on the cream cheese and prosciutto! Crazy.
Try a different spot in the city. I hear the Drake has a nice service
We went there for brunch before seeing a play. The location was perfect. We were disappointed in the menu as we expected on a Sunday to be able to have brunch items at noon but the brunch ends at noon on Sunday. We all wanted omelettes so we were a bit disappointed.
The Lockwood experience was good but had some to be desired. When we first got there no one was at the reservation desk so we were left waiting for 5 minutes (yes it was actually 5 minutes) until we were seen. This was after we asked a staffer running drinks if this is where we were supposed to check in for reservations and she said yes. Our waiter brought us our food and the appetizers were wrong. He brought it back and got the right ones. He had a little bit to be desired. He seemed stressed but the restaurant was definitely not booked for the night. All in all, I wasn't pleased with the service. But! And this is a huge "but," you won't be disappointed with food. I enjoyed the appetizers, especially the charred octopus (it was cooked perfectly, a rarity), and my sea bass was melt in your mouth buttery. Overall, come for the food not the service.
Went to Lockwood before seeing Hamilton for our anniversary. We received champagne on arrival, which was very thoughtful. I feel the prix fixe menu is the way to go there. Though, my husband didn't like his salmon he ordered I liked my filet very much, which was cooked correctly. We'd definitely come back to try other things and stay at the hotel in the future.
Overpriced breakfast for luke warm food, not enough staff to meet the morning rush and one of our orders came out wrong. Nothing worse than 3 of 4 people getting their food and having the fourth waiting for his to get fixed. So many other places nearby that are better.
We saw a TV show that featured the Brownies and claimed they were invented there so we went primarily to try them. They weren't even on the menu, but the waitress said we could get them anyway. MY wife and I shared a very average brownie that was not what we saw on the show. Very disappointing. They should have warned us that they no longer made the ones they were known for.
We stayed at Palmer House and made lunch reservations at Lockwood well in advance of our trip, but were told a week before that a Mother's Day buffet would be offered instead. The cost per person was at least 2-3 times more expensive than the lunch menu would've been. The buffet items were only slightly warm and the selection of dishes very limited--not at all the quality we expected. The asparagus was practically raw and was so tough, it was inedible. Compressed potatoes were cold. The only chicken dish offered were "nuggets". *Very* disappointing for the amount of money we paid. However, the desserts were tasty. Wait staff was pleasant , but they allowed dishes to pile up on our table. I expected much better food and service at Palmer House. Would never eat there again.
The steak was absolutely amazing. The sea bass, very average. An already rich fish had cream all over it and was almost intolerable. My husband spent a few hours getting sick after painful cramps 3 hours after our meal...otherwise the service and ambiance were great!
Was in Chicago for a meeting and had dinner here with family at their suggestion -- local cousins who used to come here for Sunday brunch as kids. The hotel lobby, which is a spectacular beaux arts landmark, is not separated well from Lockwood, so when the lobby bar hops , the noise is notable. That said, the classic cocktails were well prepared (one of our party had a Grasshopper, and my Manhattan was made with local Korval bourbon which was great), the octopus was delicious, and the mains overall good. The service was adequate. Overall, much nicer than a typical hotel restaurant by far
We made reservations for 10:45 for dinner after a play. I ordered a vodka tonic. It was flat. I sent it back. I'm not sure if they gave me my same drink back or what, but the second one was flat, too. Even though the restaurant suggested that time on Open Table, we were rushed to order because the kitchen was about to close. We weren't even halfway done with our appetizer (more like 20% done) when the server asked if we were OK getting our steaks at that moment. We said yes because who wants a steak that was under a heat lamp? For such an expensive place, it was really disappointing that we were rushed through as if we were at a diner. The food was good but not standout for that price point. Go somewhere else where they actually have time for you. Chicago has so many great restaurants that appreciate your business that you should not waste your time/money here.
