One of our favorite spots in the Roanoke Valley for Sunday Brunch! Love dinner there as well!
We had a party of 6 including teens and adults. This was our first time visiting this restaurant and we were blown away with the food and service. Our waitress engaged us and helped us choose outstanding choices for dinner and a great bottle of wine. Each of us....all 6, made the same comment, "this is the best meal I've ever had!" The tastes were vibrant, unique, with depth and breath of flavors and use of local ingredients. We all commented that we thought the interior could be improved to make for a better ambience. We thought that deeper/darker colors and use of different fabrics, including leather and different art of the wall could create a more upscale vibe.
My mussels were outstanding as always (I've had them every visit). My wife's burger was great and cooked perfectly as requested. My OLD FASHIONED from the bar was the best I've every had anywhere. Had to order a second one..... Definitely love the place!!!
The bison and trout were exceptional!
Great food and they serve awesome Ballast Point beer!
It was more crowded than usual at 6:30 on a Saturday. They had held a wine tasting that afternoon and many folks stayed on for an early dinner. We were concerned the kitchen would be overwhelmed but our meals came quickly and were cooked perfectly! I always love dining here and this experience was consistent with what we have come to expect.
My mother and I love to eat at Local Roots because it's healthy, local ingredients, organic, fun atmosphere and close by.
My favorite restaurant in Roanoke! Went for Sunday dinner. Love the concept and the food is always delicious. Great wine selection too!
Nice evening, service, food overall. The pappardelle with beef (pot roast, really) wasn't a hit with one of our group.
Our server, Nate, was friendly, courteous & knowledgeable.
We had a great dinner for two. Service was extremely good.
Our friends had the trout and said it was the best they’d ever had. Bison was delicious. Snapper was good but modest serving. Oysters were very fresh and nice presentation. Service was excellent!
If you have a bucket list then add this gem to it!
Always a good choice, of my six visits, the staff has been excellent. The wait staff know the dishes, and are well informed about the way items are prepared.
Not a good place to go. Our server did not know the difference from a vegetarian to a vegan to a pescatarian which is ironic because of the values that this local “farm to table” restaurant displays to its consumers. Our server commented on my dates food when she did not finish it in a very invasive and over curious manner. The amount and tastefulness of the food for its price was ridiculous to say the least. I would not recommend visiting this establishment or depriving your pockets of any currency you have been bestowed with.
Food was terrific. The snapper with Brussel sprouts and roasted cauliflower was a fantastic combo. Interesting cocktails and knowledgeable waitstaff. Compares favorably with many D.C. celebrity restaurants.
Amazing food and service! Will definitely be back.
Great service waiter was very good at explaining menu.
For the price the portions were extremely small. And I have seen baby bib lettuce but yours was embryo bib lettuce! Also hardly any meat in the entrée. The plate my entrée was served on was half empty! I actually left hungry! The only thing that was good were the drinks! Also no bread? Very overpriced for what the diner receives. Either lower your prices, or even better increase the portions!!
I’ve eaten at Local Roots for a few different occasions. They have all met my needs for each occasion. One of my favorite places.
We love Local Roots. Perfect for special occasions. The wait staff always makes you feel like you are their only customer. The wait staff has always been very knowledgeable about the meals and ingredients. The meal presentation is always beautiful.
The food at Local Roots is creative and delicious. I had a lovely pan fried local trout over grits, while one of my friends had swordfish and the other had the grain bowl. Oysters were priced so that you could buy however many you wanted, and they were so fresh and had been separated from the shell so that they were easy to slurp into the mouth.
We discovered Local Roots 3 years ago in a return drive from the Southwest to Cape Cod. Now we return each year as we drive from Cape Cod to Florida. This was an early dinner on a winter Tuesday evening. We made our reservations in advance and were delighted to meet Diane Elliot, the owner, who told us about the history of Local Roots. The menu is always interesting. We enjoyed the NC Sea Bass entree with roasted cauliflower, crispy Brussels sprouts, and satsuma tangerine and the NC Whole Rainbow trout entree with Carolina gold rice grits, smoked apple, butternut squash purée, fennel, and celery. The ginger cake with ginger ice cream, crisp dried apple slices, and honey served with freshly brewed coffee finished the delicious meal. Friendly knowledgeable waiter and excellent service in a warm atmosphere location.
I have visited this Local Gem a couple of times, and what impresses me the most is not only their pledge to serve locally grown foods, Farm to Table, but the down to home feeling created by the staff that serves you.
Spur of the moment dinner with an out of town guest. Fabulous cheese plate, 8 beers on tap and the sampler was delicious. A couple of small plates after that, and the evening was complete. Service was just right.
Everything we ordered on the menu was wonderful. We liked enjoyed the previous family style dining experience we had a while back over the current menu set-up, but we were not disappointed in the phenomenal service and flavors.
Excellent farm to table restaurant in the Grandin Road area of Roanoke. Popular place so make reservations. Good wine selection and the menu changes often. I had the trout, which was outstanding. My friend had the pork, which she felt was too dry.
I enjoyed a lovely Sunday brunch here. My friend had eggs Benedict which were absolutely delicious! I enjoyed a terrific salad with an amazing apple dressing. I definitely recommend Local Roots!
This Farm to Table restaurant is in our neighborhood, lucky us! Chef Matt is spot on with his flavors, creativity and presentation. The food is amazing. We always start with their oysters on the half shell, with the best mignonette. This trip I had their wheatberry salad, which is truly addicting, so earthy and flavorful and a fabulous piece of bass. My husband had the house salad and a bone in pork chop that he just raved about. Also a very tasty bottle of wine from their special "Wine Club" menu. A wonderful dinner at a fabulous restaurant. You can't go wrong dining at Local Roots!
My wife’s pre-surgical dinner. We had wheat berry and watermelon radish salad, oysters on the half shell, an artisan cheese plate with five cheeses, an on the bone pork chop, roasted striped bass with beet purée, chocolate cake, ginger cake, two dirty martinis, and two craft beers. The owner talked to us engagingly, and the wait staff was attentive and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner on the eve before my wife’s major surgery.
We went on a Sunday evening so the menu was limited and served "family style." That aside, the food was excellent. Service was good, neither pushy or lazy. The ambiance is just right for this type of restaurant - homey and welcoming. Seating is tables and booths. Reservations recommend for normal meal times as the place tends to be full. Wine selection is good, not outstanding, but it should meet most customers' needs.
Everything we ate was very good. 3 of us had the scallops and they were tasty. Later all three of us had some nausea and one got sick. She said when she ate the scallops a couple didn't seem as cooked as they should be. Still, Local Roots is our favorite spot and we will return. The restaurant was slammed Saturday night!
Waited 20 minutes from arrival till a table waiter came by.
Fab brunch...Lovely eggs atop corn grits with Benton's bacon, greens, and browned butter, with a requisite side of mimosas! Terrific service and just fun place to be.
Just moved to the area after living in France for many years. Heard a lot about Local Roots, and found that it was worth the visit. Excellent food and wine (with an extensive wine list), very good service from Lauren, and nice, reasonable portions. The champagne cake was amazing. I'll be bringing my friends here when they visit from France.
Always enjoyable on every level!
Dinner for my wife’s birthday. Started off well with personalized menus but unfortunately that was the highlight of dinner. Became a comedy of errors after that with waiter spilling drink on my wife’s new coat, forgetting orders and generally lack of common sense. While food had good presentation it was quite bland. In our party of 6 no one really enjoyed their meal.
Had heard good things about restaurant but left there unimpressed and disappointed. May give another try but not in a huge hurry to return.
We got the New Year’s Eve pre fixed menu with wine pairing and it was delicious!
Very Good, much better than last time I visited. Bartender is incredible, food was very good, flavors great! Muscles, pork chop, bison steak was so good! I would recommend. Everything on the menu is good. You can’t go wrong. Great job!
