Local Roots (Virginia) - A Farm to Table Restaurant
Our roots are deeply embedded in the lush farmlands of Southwest Virginia. They are nourished by modern-day farmers who employ age-old techniques, hard-working heroes who nurture not only the people, but the land as well. We've gotten to know these local farmers and are better for it. They help us keep time with the rhythms of the seasons. Sun-ripened tomatoes in the summer, hearty root vegetables in the winter - we serve what is fresh and natural at the peak of its flavor.
Our roots are fed by a philosophy we call S.O.L.E.: Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical. It's a principle that guides us as we decide from whom to source our meats and vegetables. It also informs our beverage program.

Have dined here before and always great!
We arrived about 10 minutes late but called ahead to inform host.
After a major snafu Brian made it all right. Thank you, Brian.
We will be back.
Easter Brunch. Everything was perfect!
Thanks for joining us for Easter Brunch! We're beyond pleased that you enjoyed a "perfect" meal for the special holiday. Hope to see you again soon!
My third visit to local roots in Roanoke. The food and service were both top notch. Presentation a plus. This restaurant is located in a residential part of Roanoke that is quiet and walkable. Movie theater next door is an added incentive. Dessert ( bread pudding) was awesome as well.
Thank you for your visit to Local Roots and positive review. It is our goal to provide top notch food and service on every visit. Coincidentally, bread pudding and a movie at the Grandin Theatre our some of our favorites, too! We hope to see you again soon!
This is my husband and my “go to” date restaurant! Delicious food, knowledgeable wait staff, and wine pairings that can’t be beat! Every bite awakens your taste buds!
Be sure to try the mussels (and order extra bread to soak up the extra broth!)
Proud to be your "go to!" Thanks for all your visits and for taking the time to let us know about your experiences.
The food is outstanding
Thank you for your visit to Local Roots and positive review. We're so glad you found the food outstanding and hope to see you again soon!
Had the cheese burger. Home made pimento cheese was extra sharp and overpowered all oher flavors. Pickled onios and tomatoes were very nice.
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and for your visit to Local Roots. We're so sorry that the cheese was overpowering. Since we do make it in house, we can always adjust the recipe. We can also go light on the cheese or substitute other cheeses if that would interest you the next time. We hope to have you try us again soon! Thanks again.
Totally love Local Roots. Their brunch menu is varies and has something for everyone!
Thank you for your visit to Local Roots and positive review. We love that you love us. We hope to see you for brunch or any other meal again soon!
Try it. You won't be disappointed. Excellent food. Interesting choices. Great service.
Thank you for your visit to Local Roots and positive review. We're so happy to be a restaurant you can recommend. Hope to see you again soon!
Best and most innovative food in Roanoke area. Good wine and beer list and service attentive.
One of our regular restaurants to dine at.
Thank you for your visit to Local Roots and positive review. We're so happy to have you as a regular!
The service was a little lacking, our waitress seemed to take forever when we asked for simple things like water and the check. The lighting, especially at night was pretty dim and it was pretty loud in the restaurant due the lack of sound absorbing material. The food was beautiful, but needed a little more Harmony in the taste. Everything tasted great separately, but having a mouthful of all the ingredients on the plate gave a weird, but not unenjoyable taste. The sweet potato soup though, was top notch, the salads beautiful. The bison was a little lackluster in my opinion. I got it medium and it seemed a little dry? The dessert, however, was where this place excelled. My mom got the Panna Cotta and I got the bread pudding. Both AMAZING.
Thanks for your visit to Local Roots and for providing feedback. We've shared your experience with your server, Shell, to use it as a reminder to always pay attention to everything at the table. We also encouraged her to ask for help if she gets too busy to be fully attentive. We take pride in our award-winning staff. They're always ready to lend a helping hand. Additionally, we shared your thoughts on the bison dish with the chef. We hope to see you again and receive 5 stars across the board!
A truly culinary adventure! Great flavor combinations, Great service.
Delightful place for Sunday brunch. The food was superb (frittata, pork shoulder Benedict, and French toast). The service was attentive and respectful. Friends enjoyed their day in a wonderful setting.
Our cocktails were not great, but the food was amazing and service was outstanding.
Wonderful service and food, and wine!
All of the food was marvelous, but the shrimp, grapefruit and brussels sprouts ranks among the best meals I have eaten in my life -- balanced in terms of tastes, but with surprising bursts of flavor which complemented and supported one another. Local Roots sets a new high bar for excellence in dining.
Local Roots is one of those restaurants that exceeds expectations in almost every way. The smoked trout Benedict was heavenly. The bloody Mary was delightful. And the meatloaf... Ohh boy, the meatloaf was amazing. Service was excellent, and the atmosphere was quaint, cozy, clean, and pleasant. I will be back!
Authentic original cuisine that was superior in flavor. No trends here just outstanding food.
I had a beautiful salad that was every bit as delicious as it was pretty. My husband had fish encrusted with different seeds and spices and it was so good. The panna cotta dessert was quite delicious as well.
Wonderful! Interesting choices that turned out even better than expected! Not your everyday restaurant- well worth a visit for great food and service!
Love it every time! Linda and her staff are always welcoming and the food is always a treat!!
great dining experience. freshest salad greens I've ever had. love the Sunday format with shared vegetable bowls. We'll be back soon
Had shrimp & grits - excellent.
Have to say last brunch i had eggs benedict that wasnt so great (had been previously) so I avoided.
This was a delicious alternative!
outstanding delicious farm to table food and excellent service throughout our meal.
As always, Local Roots was in top form, cozy and top top service, quick, attentive and very very courteous. We feel totally at home here!
Great food, attentive and awesome wait staff, great dining experience
It's a nice, comfortable place with a great vibe, caring owners, great value. We'll be back
Such good food and family friendly! They were very accommodating to my son's food allergies.
Wonderful neighborhood restaurant with an interesting menu, tho very few choices due to the farm to table aspect, but I love that! The oysters and mussels are incredible!
Service was excellent without being inundated. Cocktails were creative and delicious. All food was artistic and fabulous. Enjoyed the grain salad and striped bass. Can’t wait to go back.
Excellent food and service. Waiter very knowledgeable about food and wine choices.
Very nice place. Food is above average and a little on the daring (in a positive sense) side. Little more of reinterpreted "classic" local dishes, like their pork belly, might bring some sparkle into the menu. The service is always extremely nice, but could use a little more training in the conventions of the table.
We are frequent guests, which means that the critiques are from a position of satisfaction and meant for improvement towards excellence; which they could easily achieve.
The food, as always, was delightful. Each dish is carefully constructed using carefully sourced ingredients and offers variety in flavor, texture, and appearance. The menu accommodates a range of dietary options, each one delicious. The service is first-rate. Local Roots remains our first choice for fine dining. The restaurant is small, intimate and popular; reservations are typically necessary.
Still one of the best restaurants in the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia. The food is the freshest, service is great and the bar does amazing drinks.
We had an 8:45 pm reservation and had to wait for a table more than a half hour before being seated. A couple came in after we did and were given a table for 4 before we were seated. We were a party of 4. There was no place to stand and wait. The bar was full and it was cold outside. Our server was lovely but the wait for our dishes was interminable. The food was fine.
Wonderful place to eat, energy and vibe just right; waiter really seemed to care that everything was just right
we had scallops, steak, oysters and grain bowl-no one was disappointed!
Fabulous experience. Each member of the waitstaff takes a lot of care and thought into the dining experience and food selections and it shows.
We have eaten at Local Roots many times and it never disappoints. Not only is the food outstanding but the prices are very reasonable. Our service was very good but not excellent. Our server didn't inform us of the specials and seemed new to the position (or distracted). It was good service but LR is usually outstanding. The menu options are limited but everything we ordered was outstanding. The portions were the right size (we take food home from many restaurants because the portions are too big).
Brian and the staff made us feel so welcome. Silver was exceptional. The food and drinks were delicious. Thank you for everything.
Prix fixed for Valentine's Day dinner. We have been before but this was a real treat. Interesting courses, well-explained by servers. Servers worked as a team, which kept things moving. About half of the ingredients were familiar but most were not. Fresh, handmade, inventive. Great wine pairings as well. Relaxed, not rushed. Enjoyed the whole experience
