Located in Roanoke's Historic Grandin District, Local Roots Restaurant celebrates the absolute best of the region, from locally-farmed vegetables and meat to the handcrafted dining room tables produced by area artisans.
Our roots are deeply embedded in the lush farmlands of Southwest Virginia. They are nourished by modern-day farmers who employ age-old techniques, hard-working heroes who nurture not only the people, but the land as well. We've gotten to know these local farmers and are better for it. They help us keep time with the rhythms of the seasons. Sun-ripened tomatoes in the summer, hearty root vegetables in the winter - we serve what is fresh and natural at the peak of its flavor.
Our roots are fed by a philosophy we call S.O.L.E.: Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical. It's a principle that guides us as we decide from whom to source our meats and vegetables. It also informs our beverage program.

This Farm to Table restaurant is in our neighborhood, lucky us! Chef Matt is spot on with his flavors, creativity and presentation. The food is amazing. We always start with their oysters on the half shell, with the best mignonette. This trip I had their wheatberry salad, which is truly addicting, so earthy and flavorful and a fabulous piece of bass. My husband had the house salad and a bone in pork chop that he just raved about. Also a very tasty bottle of wine from their special "Wine Club" menu. A wonderful dinner at a fabulous restaurant. You can't go wrong dining at Local Roots!
My wife’s pre-surgical dinner. We had wheat berry and watermelon radish salad, oysters on the half shell, an artisan cheese plate with five cheeses, an on the bone pork chop, roasted striped bass with beet purée, chocolate cake, ginger cake, two dirty martinis, and two craft beers. The owner talked to us engagingly, and the wait staff was attentive and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner on the eve before my wife’s major surgery.
We went on a Sunday evening so the menu was limited and served "family style." That aside, the food was excellent. Service was good, neither pushy or lazy. The ambiance is just right for this type of restaurant - homey and welcoming. Seating is tables and booths. Reservations recommend for normal meal times as the place tends to be full. Wine selection is good, not outstanding, but it should meet most customers' needs.
Everything we ate was very good. 3 of us had the scallops and they were tasty. Later all three of us had some nausea and one got sick. She said when she ate the scallops a couple didn't seem as cooked as they should be. Still, Local Roots is our favorite spot and we will return. The restaurant was slammed Saturday night!
Just moved to the area after living in France for many years. Heard a lot about Local Roots, and found that it was worth the visit. Excellent food and wine (with an extensive wine list), very good service from Lauren, and nice, reasonable portions. The champagne cake was amazing. I'll be bringing my friends here when they visit from France.
Dinner for my wife’s birthday. Started off well with personalized menus but unfortunately that was the highlight of dinner. Became a comedy of errors after that with waiter spilling drink on my wife’s new coat, forgetting orders and generally lack of common sense. While food had good presentation it was quite bland. In our party of 6 no one really enjoyed their meal.
Had heard good things about restaurant but left there unimpressed and disappointed. May give another try but not in a huge hurry to return.
Excellent service and the food was delicious. The only thing that would’ve made the experience better would have been if we were seated farther away from the door. The restaurant did have long, heavy drapes at the entrance to decrease the cold air coming in when the door was opened, but it wasn’t enough for the below freezing temperature outside.
My boyfriend and I were seated right away. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but it was full. The hostess sat us and then came back over to let us know the bar was open. We decided to stay seated, but we appreciated her attentiveness to our original request. Our waiter, Nate, was very kind and polite. He was knowledgeable about the wine selection and the featured dinner menu. We love Local Roots and are never disappointed!
We very much enjoyed our meals at Local Roots. It is quite small, so noise was moderately annoying. the food was very good. I was disappointed that there were not very many vegetarian options and no vegan ones. I loved the roasted veggie bowl with heritage grains I ordered but there were not very many veggies in it. My husband enjoyed the farm raised pork dish he ordered. Overall we would visit again.
Superior service and quality, local ingredients make this a must-stop in Roanoke. We all loved our meals from the menu and they even accommodated an older diner with a special request. We drove 170 miles and would do it again in a heartbeat. One of the best values outside our own kitchen. Highly recommended, especially if Beth is your server.
Great food! Great cocktails! Here for brunch. Lamb liver mousse, croque monsieur, bison steak =DELICIOUS! Spectacular eggnog and blood orange mimosa. Only complaint if I can call it that was how the cold air would waft through the dining room as we were eating. It still would not deter me from coming here but I highly recommend a future investment into a vestibule entrance:)
This was my first-ever visit to Local Roots. I've been aware of its reputation, but I've honestly avoided this restaurant because of the cost. Although I always seek out the best restaurants I can find in any city I visit, I've just never felt comfortable that a restaurant at this particular location in Roanoke, VA, could deliver an atmosphere, food, and service worthy of this level of pricing.
At a recent Sunday brunch visit, our party was greeted pleasantly as the the door was opened for us ... a nice touch. Apparently because we had a reservation, the greeter directed the hostess to seat us at a prime table along the wall in the middle of the room. Our waiter arrived promptly and took drink orders while we reviewed the menu. Although relatively-young, he was very professional and I was impressed with his attention to detail throughout the meal.
The bill for our meal was about $75, including three Eggs Benedict-style dishes, three Bloody Marys, coffee, tax, and tip. The food was very tasty, and the owners have done a good job in creating an interesting -- though not elegant -- atmosphere. Although I enjoyed the food very much, I thought that it was a little on the "skimpy" side for the price. The serving of breakfast potatoes, particularly, could have been twice as large as what was offered. All in all, this was a very nice experience, and I'll no doubt venture to Local Roots for dinner in the future. I expect to pay between $250 and $300 for three people upon that occasion, and I'll reserve final judgement until that time.
Very good burger, salad, soup for lunch. Friendly and helpful staff. Kitchen produced ice cream and ice were not quite up to the high, tasty level of the rest of the food. (Check out the really wonderful examples at Blue Moon Cafe in Shepherdstown, WV for better examples.)
Quantities ample. This is the second time I have eaten here. I come when in town visiting from quite a distance. Would definitely go eat there again.
i have previously enjoyed my meals at local roots. i have always ordered the eggs benedict for brunch because it was so good. this time however both my and my sister’s meals were tepid. and the hollandaise sauce i have had previously was nothing like this time. besides being cold it had a more gelatinous texture that held a decorative form on top of the egg. and the flavor was not what i think of as hollandaise. not sure i would be inclined to repeat if this a change in how this is prepared.
Quaint, but lovely ambiance! They initially sat us at a very inconvenient spot and was about to leave when they finally accommodated by moving us to a nicer table. Other than that mishap, the staff was friendly and professional. Nate took care us very well - he was knowledgeable about the food and helped us make the best choices. The dishes were delicious, fresh and very well presented! We especially loved the Heirloom grains salad and the pork belly dish. Came away happy and will definitely be back!!!��
We were visiting our daughter who is attending school in Roanoke & celebrating my husband's birthday. The cheese platter appetizer was the best part of our dinner. We each ordered different appetizers & entrees. All were unremarkable in taste, sadly. I was disappointed having read glowing reviews as well as in the value for the cost. I really wanted to love this experience.
