Local Roots (Virginia) - A Farm to Table Restaurant
Our roots are deeply embedded in the lush farmlands of Southwest Virginia. They are nourished by modern-day farmers who employ age-old techniques, hard-working heroes who nurture not only the people, but the land as well. We've gotten to know these local farmers and are better for it. They help us keep time with the rhythms of the seasons. Sun-ripened tomatoes in the summer, hearty root vegetables in the winter - we serve what is fresh and natural at the peak of its flavor.
Our roots are fed by a philosophy we call S.O.L.E.: Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical. It's a principle that guides us as we decide from whom to source our meats and vegetables. It also informs our beverage program.
Still one of the best restaurants in the Roanoke Valley and Southwest Virginia. The food is the freshest, service is great and the bar does amazing drinks.
Fabulous experience. Each member of the waitstaff takes a lot of care and thought into the dining experience and food selections and it shows.
We have eaten at Local Roots many times and it never disappoints. Not only is the food outstanding but the prices are very reasonable. Our service was very good but not excellent. Our server didn't inform us of the specials and seemed new to the position (or distracted). It was good service but LR is usually outstanding. The menu options are limited but everything we ordered was outstanding. The portions were the right size (we take food home from many restaurants because the portions are too big).
Brian and the staff made us feel so welcome. Silver was exceptional. The food and drinks were delicious. Thank you for everything.
Prix fixed for Valentine's Day dinner. We have been before but this was a real treat. Interesting courses, well-explained by servers. Servers worked as a team, which kept things moving. About half of the ingredients were familiar but most were not. Fresh, handmade, inventive. Great wine pairings as well. Relaxed, not rushed. Enjoyed the whole experience
Made lunch reservations (as suggested on their website) thinking we would get a nice table or booth, but we were seated against the wall next to a couple having a business lunch with their laptops on our table. They kindly moved them, but I suggested we sit elsewhere as not to disturb them since there were plenty of tables available, but the hostess insisted we sit there. So, we tried to enjoy our lunch while hearing every word of their business meeting while they constantly used their laptops as reference. Food was fair; small portions. We used a gift certificate and our server could not figure out how to add the tip on the receipt. She tried three times and did not get it right, so we just left a cash tip. Very poor experience.
Local Roots never fails to disappoint!
Local Roots knocked it out of the park once again. We had a great anniversary dinner, top notch service, great staff, wonderful atmosphere. Thanks!
Wonderful food and service! The Carolina Bison Flank Steak was cooked to perfection and the Prince Edward Island mussels may have converted me to a seafood lover. Cozy, comfortable and elegant atmosphere. Perfect place for my husband and I to celebrate Valentine’s Day (and my husband’s birthday) a little early
A small, cozy place that serves delicious farm-to-table food. Our service was great, and the food was delicious. We were taken by surprise by the special "Sunday Dinner" menu, which lacked some of the choices that we were looking forward to from the menu posted online, but will definitely go back to try the regular menu too.
The brunch menu has plenty to choose from and the food was amazing!
We travel between upstate NY and Charlotte 2-3 times per year. Even though Roanoke is not exactly on our route, we always make an extra day to enable us to visit LR for drinks and dinner. We have never been disappointed and always look forward to their varied and changing menu. A homey atmosphere and great service.
Fabulous as always.
Great food and service in nice atmosphere. Will return soon.
We both had the lunch salad which was good but not spectacular but of course I don’t really expect spectacular from a lunch salad. Our server was excellent and attentive and checked on alternative vinaigrette to the standard offering. Everything is always very fresh at Local Roots!
An excellent Restaurant! Everything thing about it is really good, especially their soups and salads. As a bonus during the week wine and beer are half price at lunch.
I was disappoined with pork sandwich for lunch. Pork was ok but I did not like it mixed with the other ingredents and sauce. Stick to pork and leave out the other stuff. The Bloody Mary was excellent- nicely seasoned. It should be served with a straw. Wait staff was ok, ho-hum. A person at my table asked for cocktail sauce for her fish and chips. They did not have any. That was surprising since it is such a regular condiment.
We eat quite frequently in Roanoke (we live in Blacksburg) and have tried all of the highly rated ones. Our experience at Local Roots last evening pushed it to the top of our list of places to eat. The food was excellent, the menu had a number of interesting choices, service was top of the line (our waitress asked if we had an appointment after the meal, which we did - not had this happen before in Roanoke), and the ambience was like a good neighborhood restaurant. We had guests who also said it was their best experience in Roanoke over Blue Apron and others. Can't say enough about it.
Fabulous place. The only reason I gave the food a 4 instead of 5 is because I am not a fan of “smoked” flavoring in food. But the food was innovative and well prepared. Service was excellent. Do not hesitate to eat here.
A wonderful local restaurant in quaint Grandin Village in the City of Roanoke. The food quality and service is excellent. Truly a pleasure to enjoy a meal at Local Roots, Roanoke.
As always, the service, the staff and the food were top notch!
The food and service at Local Roots are phenomenal. I am a German native and the cabbage side dish for the Sunday dinner tasted exactly like the cabbage I'm used to back home. What makes this place so special is that the food comes from local farms which gives each meal an incredible taste. The staff at the restaurant are very attentive and amiable. I can't wait to come back to Roanoke so that I can eat here again! Thank you Local Roots for rekindling my palate!
Cold eggs Benedict. Another guest’s dish was cool. The others were fresh and hot. Chalk this up as a natural hiccup that happens time to time. Absolutely will be back.
Always a fabulous place for brunch.
Always a treat ! Food and service was perfect. Our favorite spot.
My husband and I visited the restaurant a while back and loved the food. Came back with my mom and she can't stop talking about how great the food and experience was. We loved the mussels and scallops. The butternut squash soup was delicious. Servers were attentive and we received excellent customer service. Can't wait to visit them again soon.
Once again the food and staff at Local Roots treated us right! Steak cooked to perfection, wife had the day boat scallops, they were perfect also. Wine club choices were nice and priced right. Great job Local Roots!
Great Food and Great Service! I had an amazing bowl of soup and salad, with the pork belly appetizer... it was so good!
Spot on as usual. With the snow storm Saturday night, it wasn't too busy, but lucky for us as we were able to dine after our movie at The Grandin Theatre next door. Started with a very reasonably priced bottle of wine, off the wine club menu (a bargain to join - well worth it) and a dozen oysters on the half shell. We both had a delicious salad to start. I opted for the heirloom grain bowl, which was outstanding! and so much food I took some home for lunch. My husband had the clam pasta dish which was delicious.
A great evening at a wonderful place. What more could you ask for?
My wife and I were on a 2000 mile truck ride with family stuff, and decided to have a nice dinner in Roanoke. We love farm to table, and Local Roots was fantastic, with a great wine list as well. The food was excellent. We normally do not go with cocktails, but tried a couple and were very pleased. The staff was very attentive, with bonus attention from the owner. Great night.
My husband and I had dinner here with my son, his wife and 5 year old daughter. The service was excellent, and we all fit nicely in a large round booth. As much as we liked the restaurant we were not so crazy about the food. Alayna's ham and cheese sandwich came on a hard, chewy white bread, which was not so good for a 5 year old. We did then order her some plain noodles with Parmesan cheese, which were much better. The bread was just too hard for her to chew. Our appetizer plate was nice, with various meats. My pork came with sweet potatoes and various other vegetables all in a very spicy sauce, so I left all of those on my plate. My husband's steak was good, and he liked the mashed potatoes. The trout is the WHOLE trout, including the head and tail, and all the bones. I know there's a way to "debone" the fish after cooking, and that would have made it easier to eat...perhaps that should be an option. Also, Alayna thought the head and eyes looked scary! My son's burger and fries were good, and we all enjoyed the 5 samplings of ice cream for dessert.
While we all enjoyed our night out, it was very expensive, and some of the food just not to our liking. We love that they try to use local fruits, vegetables, etc. but some of the seasonings masked the taste of fresh food that could easing stand on it's own.
Food and service was very good; however, very few options for vegetarians. Server was very personable and provided ample service.
Expected better food from an expensive limited menu. Wine was unbalanced, vegetables & fish undercooked, and lamb over cooked
My friend and I had a great meal, and a great time connecting with each other in the aesthetic, comfortable setting. Thank you!
Very friendly staff. The food was terrific and the cocktails were a lot of fun.
Really great meal. Highly recommend to locals and visitors.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Roanoke. The menu is varied and creative and the service is always excellent. Tonight was no exception. The waiter was outstanding and very knowledgeable. His suggestions were right on point for both the entrees and the wine. We started with oysters and finished with bread pudding. She had the scallops and i had the beef. Both were outstanding. This place is a real gem in the Grandin Road area of southwest Roanoke.
Great cocktails and food, always amazing service!!
New, creative, stunning ... I travel an hour to Local Roots several times a year for fine cuisine and have yet to be disappointed. The menu stays updated with the seasons and fresh ingredients. The preparation and service are exceptional. Thank you! You are a gem.
