Local Roots (Virginia) - A Farm to Table Restaurant
Our roots are deeply embedded in the lush farmlands of Southwest Virginia. They are nourished by modern-day farmers who employ age-old techniques, hard-working heroes who nurture not only the people, but the land as well. We've gotten to know these local farmers and are better for it. They help us keep time with the rhythms of the seasons. Sun-ripened tomatoes in the summer, hearty root vegetables in the winter - we serve what is fresh and natural at the peak of its flavor.
Our roots are fed by a philosophy we call S.O.L.E.: Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical. It's a principle that guides us as we decide from whom to source our meats and vegetables. It also informs our beverage program.

Great Food and Great Service! I had an amazing bowl of soup and salad, with the pork belly appetizer... it was so good!
Spot on as usual. With the snow storm Saturday night, it wasn't too busy, but lucky for us as we were able to dine after our movie at The Grandin Theatre next door. Started with a very reasonably priced bottle of wine, off the wine club menu (a bargain to join - well worth it) and a dozen oysters on the half shell. We both had a delicious salad to start. I opted for the heirloom grain bowl, which was outstanding! and so much food I took some home for lunch. My husband had the clam pasta dish which was delicious.
A great evening at a wonderful place. What more could you ask for?
My wife and I were on a 2000 mile truck ride with family stuff, and decided to have a nice dinner in Roanoke. We love farm to table, and Local Roots was fantastic, with a great wine list as well. The food was excellent. We normally do not go with cocktails, but tried a couple and were very pleased. The staff was very attentive, with bonus attention from the owner. Great night.
My husband and I had dinner here with my son, his wife and 5 year old daughter. The service was excellent, and we all fit nicely in a large round booth. As much as we liked the restaurant we were not so crazy about the food. Alayna's ham and cheese sandwich came on a hard, chewy white bread, which was not so good for a 5 year old. We did then order her some plain noodles with Parmesan cheese, which were much better. The bread was just too hard for her to chew. Our appetizer plate was nice, with various meats. My pork came with sweet potatoes and various other vegetables all in a very spicy sauce, so I left all of those on my plate. My husband's steak was good, and he liked the mashed potatoes. The trout is the WHOLE trout, including the head and tail, and all the bones. I know there's a way to "debone" the fish after cooking, and that would have made it easier to eat...perhaps that should be an option. Also, Alayna thought the head and eyes looked scary! My son's burger and fries were good, and we all enjoyed the 5 samplings of ice cream for dessert.
While we all enjoyed our night out, it was very expensive, and some of the food just not to our liking. We love that they try to use local fruits, vegetables, etc. but some of the seasonings masked the taste of fresh food that could easing stand on it's own.
Food and service was very good; however, very few options for vegetarians. Server was very personable and provided ample service.
Expected better food from an expensive limited menu. Wine was unbalanced, vegetables & fish undercooked, and lamb over cooked
My friend and I had a great meal, and a great time connecting with each other in the aesthetic, comfortable setting. Thank you!
Very friendly staff. The food was terrific and the cocktails were a lot of fun.
Really great meal. Highly recommend to locals and visitors.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Roanoke. The menu is varied and creative and the service is always excellent. Tonight was no exception. The waiter was outstanding and very knowledgeable. His suggestions were right on point for both the entrees and the wine. We started with oysters and finished with bread pudding. She had the scallops and i had the beef. Both were outstanding. This place is a real gem in the Grandin Road area of southwest Roanoke.
Great cocktails and food, always amazing service!!
New, creative, stunning ... I travel an hour to Local Roots several times a year for fine cuisine and have yet to be disappointed. The menu stays updated with the seasons and fresh ingredients. The preparation and service are exceptional. Thank you! You are a gem.
Noise level was way too loud. Could not stand it given the wait for the food. Left after an hour ithout eating.
Wonderful experience. Great server, delicious food, family like atmosphere. Try the Virginia wine! Worth a detour if you’re driving through Roanoke!
Local Roots is one of the top Roanoke restaurants. The food is always fresh and very good taste. My seafood stew was excellent. Very tasty sides and good selection of craft beers. SUPER!
I met friends for a holiday brunch. This was the first time that I've been to Local Roots for brunch and it was very, very good. We had a four-year-old with us, and he enjoyed his meal very much.
Absolutely fantastic food and excellent drinks. Menu was classic new American: comfortably familiar but fresh and refined. Everything was perfectly done, seasoned, and well portioned. Very friendly and responsive staff.
It was amazing! I would go everyday if I could afford too lol
This was my second time at Local Roots and I planned my entire trip to Roanoke to have this meal. Everything was incredible and such high quality. Service was excellent and made for such a pleasant dining experience on top of an amazing meal. Definitely a can’t miss in Roanoke. Will be going again in June.
One of our favorites in the area and well worth the drive down the mountain for us. Best burger around, service has always been the best and we love eating our neighbor farm ~ Patchwork Farms ~ food prepared so well to table. Thank you, Local Roots, consistanly excellent.
Thanks for making our birthday celebrations special!
A perfect local Gem. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was due to the fact everytime I get a cheese board or charcuterie board, no one spends the time on explaining or describing pairings with them. I'vealways recieved the platter with an "enjoy!" Apart from enjoying my food, I love understanding what it is I am eating and knowing for future reference and reccomendations.
This was our second time there and far better than our first time where we had one choice for entree as the kitchen ran out. Excellent selection this time. I had the rainbow trout which was flavorful and filling at 1 pound. My wife had the scallops which were tender and well-presented. It must have been the end of happy hour when we arrived at 6:30 as it was very noisy. I recommend a later reservation time if you want to talk rather than spend the time on your phones.
The website does not have a menu since it changes daily. The choices and food was excellent. Very well prepared and presented. Extensive wine and Craft beer selection with emphasis on local suppliers. Our waitress was very attentive and informative. Fall harvest was featured during our visit. It was truly a surprise how delightful and real fresh vegetables could taste. While not an elegant setting, the atmosphere was friendly and inviting and I would highly recommend if you are looking for a pleasant surprise from usual restaurant fair.
Always a treat!
My husband and I dined with 2 other couples and the two of us always enjoy!
One couple only commented on the salad which they considered the highlight of the meal. They both had pork dish over grits.
The other couple thought hamburger price was too high and didn't like the noise.
My husband I thoroughly enjoyed our 2 burgers. It would have been good to have other food options but we were there Sunday at 5 and only choice was Sunday menu. Four of us traveled nearly an hour to dine at Local Roots.
Anniversary dinner and though the restaurant was full, it was quiet enough to whisper sweet nothings. Food choices were excellent and owner Diane was friendly welcoming and attentive, finding out from our server that we were celebrating an anniversary and comped us dessert to celebrate.
This was my first visit to Local Roots. I came with my daughter who lives in New York City and who eats out frequently. The food that we enjoyed at this restaurant was certainly on a par with anything that my daughter has eaten in New York City. The food was beautifully presented and was so interesting because of the combinations of tastes and flavors. Our waiter was absolutely perfect. He was knowledgeable about the menu items and very attentive to our needs. So bravo to Local Roots...and thank you for a great dining experience that my daughter and I shall always remember.
Saw a friend post about this place and worked in a stop on our way back to DC. Eat here if you come through Roanoke! We had the scallops and burger — both delicious — but the pimento cheese burger is PERFECT.
Fabulous creative cuisine and one of our favorites. Outstanding service.
We came for my father in law's birthday, 4 adults and 2 children. Everyone absolutely loved it, especially the mussels and scallops.
We came in with a large group that included a vegan and a gluten free person who is nervous about new foods, and everyone was delighted with their meal. The squash and apple soup with the lunch salad was a perfect combination. We look forward to coming back!
The service here was amazing, and the food was top notch. A wonderful place to get together with friends
Excellent food, exceptional presentation , great service
Great meal, great service, would recommend!
A nice evening....2 friends left to sit and enjoy our evening without feeling rushed. We ended up sharing two small plates. The cheese and fruit, crackers, etc were perfect for two women. We also enjoyed pea hummus. The waitress was super accommodating, splitting our last shared glass of wine into 2 glasses for us. The farm to table concept was very much appreciated. There were 2 larger groups on either side of us, but somehow, the noise level never got crazy. So much left on the menu to try....I hope to go back on my next visit to Roanoke.
This is my go-to restaurant for all occasions rated slightly elegant and above. I've never had a bad dish here, the staff are super accommodating and friendly, and the building is beautiful.
This is one of my favorite places for good eats, a family friendly place to relax. Local Roots has a warm and welcoming atmosphere with delicious food. I especially enjoy the yummy cocktails!
My wife and I love Local Roots. The service is always very good and relaxed and the food is spectacular.
It was my first time and I will definitely be back! Loved it!!!
A shining light of culinary delight! The food is fabulous.
