L'Oca d'Oro Ratings and Reviews
Wonderful neighborhood gem in Mueller. We love eating here as often as we can. Great rotating menu. Really love the variety and they never fail on their recipes. Wait staff is always helpful. The environment works wonderfully too. Modern, yet rustic. Comfortable. All around great place. Try it!!! If nothing else, go there and try the house-made rustic bread appetizer with honey butter and olive oil! There is a bread heaven. It is here!!
Best waiter in town, Neil H---worth the visit just to have him serve you. Food is well prepared and tasty. Portions are small and it is difficult to know what to order as the menu is a mish-mash of dishes.
One request is that they stop serving water that is chlorinated as it is not necessary in this day and age to to do that. Austin water is not pure folks---wake up!
The food was excellent, but the service was a little slow. The waitress was definitely knowledgeable and friendly though. The bar area was nice and quiet, but the dining room was pretty loud.
Also, it was very strange that they automatically applied a 20% gratuity for me and my wife's meal. I am usually happy to tip 20% as a former service worker myself, but its annoying to be forced into it. If you want to pay your workers well, then just pay your workers and raise the price of the meal. There are other places in Austin that do this. Don't just add a 20% upcharge and then highlight it for me on the receipt. So strange.
Wait staff are always cheery, kind, and helpful, but do not hover. Menu varies based on ingredient availability and creativity of staff so don't go expecting to get the same thing every time! Well, except the bread. Not only is it available every time, it is like the best bread on the planet. I would have it as my last meal--for sure. It's that good. Love that the owner pays living wage. The staff are consistent and now know us by name. They definitely earn the "living wage" and I'm happy to pay the uncharge on the ticket. Excited to have such a hidden gem right in my neighborhood. Will definitely continue to go back.
I went this week to celebrate my birthday (party of 4, first visit for all of us). We ordered quite a lot of food and every single dish was fantastic. The service was great: friendly, knowledgeable and just the right amount of attentiveness...and the hosts were very accommodating. I couldn't recommend L'Oca d'Oro more highly!
While in Austin for a show, we were looking for a nice place to have dinner close to our rehearsal space. We chose this location due to proximity to the venue and a few reviews we read online. This location was perfect! Every item was delicious! Our server was incredibly attentive. It was a great chance for us to connect before the busy weekend. Thank you!
Every time I go to L'Oca d'Oro I think they can't top the last time I went, but every time I am wrong. Despite the fact that they no longer have their amazing antipasto plates, everything we had was amazing--fish, pasta, salads, cocktails, etc. The staff is incredibly kind, friendly and knowledgeable as well. Any meal at L'Oca d'Oro is a special event!
I had high hopes for L'Oca d'Oro but it honestly fell short of my expectations. Perhaps we just had bad a bad waiter (he disappeared for 20 minutes and we had to order our appetizers with someone else, then he continuously interrupted our conversation to ask us questions unrelated to ordering food). To top it all off, our server admitted to and then apologized for the slow service (which he blamed on it being busy that night) and encouraged us to come back. We found it odd and a little off-putting.
While the appetizers were delicious (highly recommend the Grilled Foccaccia & Broccoli Rabe), I was unimpressed with my main course. Beyond that, had our waiter been more attentive we likely would have opted for the tasting menu but were unaware of it until we had already put in our appetizers. For me it was a so-so meal - I'm happy that we checked the box but honestly, I'm not sure if it'll be a place we add to our "go-to" list.
The food was unusual, interesting, and delicious. I loved everything they served us, and it lived up to their reputation as a great restaurant. On this particular occasion, however, the service was not up to par. They seemed to have forgotten the second course, and when we asked about it, brought it out after the third course. Then, when the bill arrived, it had some items on it that we had not ordered, and it appeared they had mixed it up with another table's order. However, they cheerfully removed the erroneous items when I pointed them out. The restaurant is rather noisy inside when full; I think they could add some noise-reduction barriers in the main dining room and improve things.
The food and service were amazing! We loved every single course that we ate, especially their “s’mores” dessert. It was to die for!
The only thing I noticed is that their walls and floors are pretty bare; so while it was nice and quiet when my date and I arrived, we could literally hear it getting louder as the place filled up.
I really enjoyed the dining experience -- from start to finish. Very warm and inviting. Casual, yet still special. The food offers tiny gems of deliciousness. Go for their signature dishes without hesitation. Portions are on the small side, so order enough then add more. We did a grazing meal for four. I can't wait to return. Order anything with mushrooms!!!
From the server's explanation of "everything is grown/prepared on our premises" to the arrival of fixed price plates, we were all astounded that we waited so long to discover this gem! We went with the wine tasting as well- truly rounded off each course. Much for this local restaurant to be proud of!
In the vibrant Austin food scene, this is a true stand-out. A very creative menu of authentic Italian regional dishes with definite gourmet flair! Locally sourced everything with an eye toward sustainability and ethical practices in both food and service. Service was exemplary. Informative, but never hovering. Wine list is carefully chosen to compliment the cuisine.
It is unusual to find such a unique restaurant in a busy shopping center, but this one is a true gem. Highest recommendation!
