Liv's Oyster Bar Ratings and Reviews
Livs is a consistent performer. The meals are delicious and presented well. The raw bar features oysters from a variety of locations, both east and west coasts varieties. Course selections includes lighter fare like fish tacos through womderfully prepared Berkshire pork chops. I highly recommend Livs.
I have had a mixed experience at Liv's. Service has always been good and friendly. That being said the last time I was there, there was an unbelievable smell. I had been told about this by a friend and had gone two time prior without any issue but this last time it was noticeable. I mentioned it to the manager that explained that they were handling the issue and that it was a known problem. We had already ordered our meals and I felt that I should stay. I should have left because the bill was expensive to endure the smell. Embarrassed, I paid the bill and left making note on my receipt of the odor. That same night by chance a friend came in for his birthday, sat down nearby table ordered drinks and then left because of the smell. NOT HAPPY
The food at Love's was delicious. Two of us were not very hungry, so we ordered a couple of appetizers. The creamed cauliflower soup was outstanding. Its smoked mussels added a wonderful contast to the subtlety of the cauliflower puree. The tuna tartar was fabulous as well. And the service was impeccable.
Liv's is usually the restaurant that I consider to have the best food around (i'm a big fish eater and their fish is always delicious). Last night's meal (swordfish) seemed more run of the mill than it usually is. Not sure if that was affected by environmental factors...there was a small of propane/gas that was very strong. I asked the host about it and he assured that it had been checked out and was OK but it was rather unappetizing. Really should have worked to air the place out. We (2) were seated next to a group of 6 women who were pretty loud so that was kind of annoying too. I'll go back because as I said, I usually love their food. Service was good.
When your meal starts with asking for more cranberry in a cran/seltzer you get nervous. My hamburger ordered med. came rare. My fear that it would lose all of it's beautiful presentation was correct. Blue cheese gone on one half...fries heated up by cooking them some more..they ruined a great hamburger. Manger gave a free cocktail and was accommodating, but did not realize that the dish was ruined the way the kitchen handled it. They should have just started over..I would have happily waited. The desserts left a lot to be desired and I was sorry I got one. Was so disappointed for Zagut rated restaurant. My niece did enjoy her roasted fish so I said nothing and was happy for her. Our waitress was very attentive and asked all the right questions, but the kitchen just seemed put out that THEY got it wrong. Been in the business so know what is right and what is wrong.
Liv's Oyster Bar never disappoints! On quaint Main Street, pleasant surroundings inside, enjoyable to sit at the bar for a drink (marvelous creative cocktails) or dinner. Menu is always changing and full of interesting options for every palate. I like to order the squash blossoms (divine) or the octopus salad for my appetizer (or fried oysters that are not on the menu!) and I had the swordfish which is lovely and light. My dining companion had the hanger steak that she raved about. Service is great. Love Liv's.
Outstanding as always. Our favorite restaurant in Connecticut. Attentive service, nice wine selection, the oyster sampler and romaine hearts salad provided a fresh and tasty start to the meal, the swordfish dish and New England seafood roast were cooked perfectly (loved the broth in the roast) and served steaming hot. Finished the meal with carrot cake (the honey ginger and cream cheese frosting was “wow”) and the campfire torte (unique desert with homemade marshmallow and dark chocolate ganache cake with a bourbon caramel sauce with smoked nuts) provided a perfect ending with the Cappuccino.
Great selection of local oysters. Had fun getting a sampler and trying out the different styles. Calamari appetizer was wonderful. Perfectly cooked, lightly breaded, and the right amount of heat. I had a homemade pasta with clams and sausage that was delicious.
I am repeating my own prior reviews of Liv's, but we have never had a meal at Liv's that was not great. The seared (barely) tuna was as good as I have ever had anywhere, and while our server was relatively new, she was as nice as can be. Never rushed and never waiting too long.
We always enjoy having dinner at Liv's. Everyone on the staff provides excellent service. The manager Julie always accommodates to makes sure we have an excellent dining experience. We have been customers of Liv's from the beginning and it is a gem along the shoreline. Joan and Peter Cahill
Met at Liv's for a light dinner. Had made reservations for two but had a family member come last minute. They were able to take us outside, but we chose to sit at the bar. Had a few specialty drinks- they were good, not memorable though. When we go to a fairly high-end restaurant we expect exceptional cocktails, but this wasn't the case. Secondly, we decided on sharing several appetizers and a salad. The salad was excellent, but the apps were mediocre. Thick breading on calamari- the dish tasted as if it was reheated, oyster special was fair.
Quite disappointed, since I had chosen to go there and had enjoyed several other delicious meals in the past.
Had not tried it in several years even though we live in the area... we walked by and saw a menu posted at the door and decided to try again... so we made the reservation and discovered that what we saw was a luncheon menu ... bottom line is that this is New York pricing without New York standout food... so, we now know and will not return...
Four of us had dinner at Liv's. Staff is welcoming and the environment is nice. Sadly, they were out of all tuna dishes, so I could not order what I intended to. The service was excellent and the food very good. The goat cheese stuffed squash blossoms were good, but very small and bland in flavor. Oysters were fine. My halibut was very good, as were the salmon dishes enjoyed by my dining companions. The fruit compote for dessert was good, but nothing spectacular.
