What Insiders Are Saying
A 24 hour French cafe that is good for everything from casual dinner with friends, to business lunch, to going face down in a burger at 3am.
Food was fresh and delicious, service was prompt and friendly, not expensive, good value, good time.
Great food..wonderful service..nice specials. Open 24 hours.
Our group of four was seated promptly with the reservation. The service was attentive. One gluten free diner was accommodated. Two people ordered steak and although "tasty" they claimed it was "chewy". My salmon was cooked as I had asked and the vegetables were good. The diner next to us had mussels, which, if I dined again for dinner, I'd be tempted to order.
I think I'll try brunch next time.
Escargot. Escargot. Escargot. One of the great late night spots on Manhattan.
This is a great place for a meeting with friends or an informal business lunch. Great character.
Waiter did not understand English
We had to return the food several times
Onion soup was cold
The sauce on the fish was too mustardy
Stay away during the weekend
I like going to this place because they normally have good service and food. This time round things just didn’t seem up to par. The kitchen forgot to make half our order. Our waiter was assigned to some other restaurant work while he was waiting tables. So we had to wait for him to come back in and check on our order. When the lamb burger came out it was a little overdone than what we had asked for. Hopefully it was just a bad day.
We love it here!!!
The restaurant is very tired. I guess because it is open 24/7 it gets so much use and it shows. It needs a refresh.
The service was pretty bad. Actually, I’d say it was very bad. The servers were more interested in talking to each other than waiting on tables.
The food was average at best. At the end of the day a restaurant is all about the food and the food here is less than average.
Great French Bistro in the heart of the Flatiron district. Good food and fabulous service
Always congenial, good bistro food consistently pleases. Especially great onion soup and tarte tatin. Highly recommend for late night bites when a coffee shop simply won't do.
Asked for one meal to be ready first told hostess then waitress who was totally unconcerned that meal came out last.
Food is good but this waitress should be fired.
The service was very good, everything we ordered was delicious, except the octopus. It was dry and tough. I told our server about this, but she did not try to compensate in any way. I should've asked for the manager. This aside, all in all we had a lovely dinner.
Your manager Anthony Segura is very helpful and makes you feel like you are a special customer
Escargot was amazing. Frog legs were amazing. Fois gras was amazing! Romantic setting, excellent service... Great date night
Been here a few times and each time is better than the previous. The only thing better than the delicious food is the fantastic service.
Always consistently delicious French bistro food.
Food is always good. We had steak frites, steak au poivre, boeuf bourguignon, duck, fish. Everything was cooked perfectly. When seven people go out to dinner someone is usually disappointed. Not at L’Express, never. Love this place.
Incredibly mediocre food. Tiny cocktails. Good bread.
Much too noisy. Food good. Service excellent.
A great, relaxed place to gather as friends or family
I hadn't been back to L'Express for several years - and it has not gotten better with age.
Both the food and the service were not very good. Had to return the steak frites as it was completely over-salted. Eggs Benedict was bland and the potatoes cold. Server was nice - but seemed a bit over-whelmed and we had to flag them down on more then one occasion for simple things like water and salt/pepper.
Our go to restaurant. The best fish in town.
Everyone was attentive, service was quick and the food was good
Always delicious food at a fair price with attentive service!
A NYC Classic...still great French bistro food, ambiance/vibe, & drinks after all these yrs!
Love the House pate!
A late after matinee dinner. The service and food was excellent. I appreciated the half-bottle wine selection.
The location was very convenient to where we were going. The lamb burgers were unusual and tasty. The service was a bit distracted but pleasant. Would definitely go back when in the area, but not a destination restaurant.
Stonefaced server never smiled, never said thank you. Food was mediocre and overpriced for the quality.
Bread hard. Steak tough. Soup just ok. Molten cake very good.
The food was absolutely delightful (obviously the most important part) Everything arrived in perfect order and no rush between apps and main course. Cocktails were so-so and a bit overpriced for what we ordered. Pinot Noir recommendation was fabulous! The waiter always seemed to appear out of nowhere anticipating our very need while managing 6 other busy tables. Tres bien! Very noisy so don’t expect a night of deep discussions or solving world problems; only if you can score a booth near the windows. Oh and tip to the owner, do away with the TV above the bar. That really takes away from the otherwise lovely ambience.
Usually my go to neighborhood lunch place but lately the service has been really slow and bad. This time my server just disappeared and never saw him again after we ordered. Tough to get coffee or a check after we ate.
Great place, loved the ambiance and service. The food was good but I would say the potatoes in my brunch entree were a little oily and not crispy. Other than that, everything was great!
Our server was rude to us the entire night and was not very accommodating. Many of us wanted to split dishes and it seemed to confuse her and she acted like it was a burden.
What was really upsetting is that we had a gift card for $177 and at the end of the night they told us it was only $17. I had just checked the day beforehand and the card also had a number to call to receive the balance. While sitting at the table, I called the number again and confirmed the amount. The manager approached me as if I was lying and was trying to steal from the restaurant. He said he would have to call (but expressed it argumentatively when it easily could have been dealt with in a calm manner). When he returned, he said that I was right. They didn't appropriately apologize for their rude tone and they didn't comp anything to make up for the inconvenience.
L'Express never disappoints. The food is reliable, yummy French bistro comfort food - our party had the duck breast, the duck confit, and mussels (frites!) - and the wine and cocktails are delicious. And all for a reasonable price. We arrived early on a Friday evening, so it wasn't loud, although it had gotten pretty noisy by the time we left. I've had every possible meal there, including very late night (I love that they are open 24 hours - how often do you find that any more, even in NYC?!), and always leave happy.
Extremely mediocre food; blase service. It's a shame, because the setting is nice and it's convenient,
Great vibe, good for groups or solo dining.
