I was looking for a reasonably priced French restaurant for a group dinner and was thrilled to find L'Express. It's conveniently located near Union Square and the food was great. I had the mussels. There is a good range of options and the house wine is a good deal. It's very cute and Parisian-looking. I would definitely recommend it, but not for anyone who is hard of hearing as it's fairly loud.

Like a French brasserie, with great food and drink, attentive but not overwhelming staff. Went on a Sunday night and sat for a few hours, drinking and enjoying the street scene, feeling no pressure to vacate the table for new customers.

L'Express is always a great spot for a meal. Went with a reservation for four which was helpful because the place was packed. Often it's okay to just walk up but during brunch times a reservation is needed. Great food, great drinks, fun atmosphere. Very well decorated and cozy inside.

I found this place in the 90s and loved stopping in for a late night dinner/snack. I have visited it off and on since—and while I have moved out of town, I still go back to visit with my girlfriends for brunch. It is the quintessential French bistro with tin ceilings, and great creative energy.

This is my "go to" restaurant (and not just because it is in my neighborhood)! The food is really consistently delicious and always appeals to me and my friends (and a great value). LOVE!!!

Food was solid, atmosphere was great. Service was the best part, my only suggestion would be lighten up on those beer prices!

We had a large party and our table was ready when we arrived, service was great and the food was outstanding. Great location too. Only thought was that when it is warm and very humid, they should close the front doors and windows.

This Sunday our brunch was ruined by the lack of professionalism of the waitress and manager of this restaurant. We were the second people to sit down in the restaurant that morning. After 50 minutes and the entire restaurant now filled with people eating, our food was nowhere to be found. Asking for someone to see what was happening was clearly bothering the rude waitress. After an hour some meals came, one totally cold and two totally wrong. Never ordered pancakes. We sent back our cold dish and they returned with the rest of the meals and then a new dish with completely raw eggs floating in it. Sent in back again. Came back again with the eggs still uncooked. We didnt even bother sending back. Just left it uneaten. Not once was there an apology, just a dirty look from the waitress. The manager and the waitress saw we were not eating it and just watched rather than try to fix the problem. He did come when we asked for the check and apologized but had no reason for such bad service, just the kitchen messed up and I have no idea what to say. He look items off and gave us a discount but it was too late. Will never go back to that place again.

This has been a recent go-to neighborhood place. It's a pretty authentic French bistro with nice ambiance. However, after having a great waiter the first couple of times, on several recent visits the service has been less than stellar; in fact I have to rate it fair to poor, with waitstaff inattentive and distracted. They seem to be more involved in their own conversations than in taking care of their tables. Our waiter was sitting at a table folding napkins and never returned to our table (this was after we had to remind him that he had forgotten to bring the bread and butter he had offered. We had to pour our own wine, and another lovely waitress did come over a couple of times when we motioned for assistance. At this point I'm in search of a replacement. Too bad.

On an empty day this place was overwhelmed with our mains coming out 30 mins after the apps. Wait staff seemed less than thrilled to be working and the food was underwhelming which didn't make up for it. Wouldn't be back with all the options in NYC.

They gave us the wrong dessert and we told them and they said no it is the right dessert so we gave up arguing. They waiter came back over and said they made a mistake but we started eating it because we were hungry. They continued to charge us for it!

Less than good service at this visit, not the norm for this restaurant which I've eaten at a few times recently and usually have had delightful and helpful waiters. This waitress had a very disconnected attitude.

The most disappointing meal i've had there. Most of the food was so-so but the steak frites was atrocious. More than half the steak was fat and sinews, which I had to cut out laboriously. The octopus was also way over cooked and tasted like charcoal. We were a large party and ordered a wide selection of dishes. Suffice it to say that the steak tartare was the only good dish, maybe because it was the only one not requiring cooking.

Have been a big fan of L'Express for many years as it is always consistently good - but this trip was lackluster at best. My sad salad was only saved by warm goat cheese masking a very weak green game and a rando whole peeled tomato that was terribly hard to cut (it looked like it came out of a can from an off brand). Fortunately my companion's chix sandwich and fries was measurably better (#emptyplate). This was a good thing as I suggested the resto for a lunch biz meeting. While my food was disappointing, the service and vibe were great. Will chalk this up to an off experience and expect better the next time I visit.

We went to L'Express in Montreal QC after booking the NYC restaurant in error. Must put on my glasses next time. Service and ambiance faultless - food presented beautifully but disappoints in taste a little. Overall still a lovely lunch time experience. Apologies to the NYC L'Express for our failure to show!

L'Express is our go to restaurant on our first night in NYC. Nothing fancy, but the service is good, food well prepared and reasonably priced, good selection of wines and cocktails well made. It helps that this place is open 24/7.

I have been here a few times, but this last time our food took forever and the waitress didn't seem to have it together for our table. Either way, of the 4 times I have been there this is the first time I had such horrible service so I hope it is not a trend.

Dropped into the restaurant because we were in the neighborhood and it wasn't easy to find a table for brunch at 2 pm on a Sunday. But we were immediately seated in this very lively and busy place that is open 24 hours a day, but you wouldn't know it. It's a casual French bistro with all the usual stuff (steak frites and so on) but also with more unusual stuff, like the avocado toast with poached eggs that I ate. Wine and beer choices are wide and as far as we could tell good quality and good value (there were only two of us). A noisy and lively environment and you mustn't mind small tables close together (well, it is NYC!). Service was excellent, especially given how busy they were. Most striking, no effort to move you along and free up your table. Request for coffee after brunch was no problem, and we sat and chatted for a while. All in all, a great find for an out-of-towner, but obviously well-known to locals around Park Avenue and 20th.
