We tried the 5-course-Tasting Menu which is good. We get out from the elevator and no one is coming to us which let us disappointed! But other services were good. The butter is great, but the rosemary one is not as good as last time I tried. The sea salt one is better this time. The desserts’ plating is ugly, thought it tastes good. Overall the food is enjoyable and we’re happy

One of the finest restaurants in Boston, almost four decades of creative and solid food, service and quality. One of the first Farm to table proponents, they continue to innovate and surprise.

Regular visitor to L'Espalier and this is the first time that I have not been wowed by the experience. Service is typically beyond excellent, however, on this occasion the pace of the 5 course chef's tasting swung from rushed during the first three courses to all but abandoned during the last two courses. (It was a late lunch and I suspect there may have been some transition issues.) The food was very good but, again, not as excellent as usual. The monk fish was well prepared but the plating was careless; the lamb was also well prepared, but the accompanying sausage was not great. Sounds picky - I just expect more from L'Espalier for the investment.

My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at L'Espalier. It did not disappoint. Our server, Richard, was exceptional. His knowledge of the menu and the wine pairings was impressive. He was friendly, warm and approachable and helped make our experience at L'Espalier one of our best dining experiences ever. The food was absolutely delicious, a true adventure and one we will never forget.

Food was good but honestly not great and subpar compared to other similarly super expensive restaurants like Mentón and others in Boston or other cities. We also paid about $100 pp extra for the wine pairing and sadly, none of them were very good. Service was stellar. Ambiance was great. At the end of the day, it would take a lot to get me to go back rather than go elsewhere for this very steep price. We paid almost $600 for two people including tax and tip.

We dined here for our Thanksgiving meal, and were thoroughly disappointed in our dining experience. Having dined with L'esplier before, we had high expectations, and were really let down. The food was average, not much to complain or rave about, but the service was truly disappointing. We had to hunt down the sommelier each time we wanted our glass refilled. We were the last in the restaurant, and it took over 20 minutes after we finished our desserts for our waiter to ask if we needed our check. Overall, service was cold, impersonal and inattentive. We will not likely return.

Thanksgiving's special menu is quite disappointing. Everthing with meat was too salty and the dessert was too heavy and sweet. However, the service was moderate. I don't recommend this place.

The vegetable menu left much to be desired. My husband ordered the regular menu and it was much more satisfying than the vegetable menu. The service was very ok. Our captain didn’t go out of the way to ensure our comfort.

This is the first review I am filling out in a long time not because I actually feel like it was a waste of time and money to dine tonight at L'Espalier. I really wanted to enjoy my meal because the service and ambiance were spectacular, but the food on all fronts was just unimpressive. I will not say that the food tasted bad because that would be untrue, but for the price point, I truly expect that the meal would be inspired and transformative. However, the meal overall was anything from that. Starting from the turnip to the raspberry souffle, everything just seemed to be mediocre. There was nothing special about the meal. As each dish was changed before me, I felt hopeful for something exciting but was always left disappointed. It felt like a way for the rich to spend money or impress others without truly presenting something that compelling. While I am not Pete Wells reviewing Per Se, this dining experience was empirically disappointing, and if you wish to spend such an exorbitant amount of money, go elsewhere...

As my friend mentioned to the manager on the way out, "the meal was alright."

Amazing food. The vegetarian menu was the best meal I have ever had. Service was amazing. As soon as my girlfriend and I walked in they were swishing us a happy anniversary as I noted in my reservation and took care to remember that we were vegetarian as also noted in our reservation. They only handed us the vegetarian menu and ensured all of our dietary preferences. So much information about the good we were eating. We did the 8 course tasting menu and each dish was unique and delicious.

Expensive but well worth it for a special occasion.

Incredible meal, with every course beautifully presented. Sole with braised endive and Concord grapes and a champagne beurre blanc may have been my favorite but it is hard to choose. Comparable to a meal I had at one of the grand restaurants in France. Definitely worth the price.

The staff was wonderful. Warm, attentive, and not stuffy in the least.

The interior decor is several decades out of date and rough edges are showing in the aged carpet, although the central wine cellar is quite modern and stylish.

Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed in the food. Several dishes were good, although perilously small in two instances. More than one plate had few, if any, unifying elements.

We paid close to $600 for two and the meal did not come close to that in terms of value. It struck us that this is a Boston institution that makes its mark by tapping into the nostalgia of long time regulars rather than trying to attract new ones.

The decor of the restaurant reflected elegance and sophistication. Our eight course meals prepared by the chef(s) exemplified culinary genius. The waiter, Carlos (along with the other servers), assigned to our table made us feel comfortable and were attentive to our requests. All the pairings of the entrees with wine were brilliant. We both became delighted by the specially prepared dessert surprises to celebrate my birthday. This was one of the best dining experiences for us in our lives. Both the food and service made us feel special. We plan on returning to L'Espalier in the near future.

This was the worst service at a restaurant of this type that I have experienced anywhere, bar none. Not only was the waiter intrusive, constantly interrupting our conversation, but he dispensed unsolicited and unwanted advice about which utensil to employ. More than once. He also got orders wrong, and entirely to bring things. It was beyond atrocious. I could go on, but why bother? Never before and never again. There are much better places to eat.

We only went for dessert at 10:30pm, but service was still excellent, with no hint of condescension. The desserts were creative and perfectly balanced in flavor. My gf and I were FULL after going through their dessert tasting menu. Dessert was 80 and + $20 tip, total came out to be $100.66 which is a steal given the service and caliber of food. Will return for a real meal!

We had a wonderful evening celebrating two wedding anniversaries with our friends. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing. It was delicious and we must say for a tasting menu it was plentiful. The staff was wonderful, friendly and attentive. The sommelier, the waiter and maitre d were very engaging. The sommelier had no problem replacing one of the wines when the table was not happy with its taste and replaced it with another immediately. The ambiance very romantic for a special evening.
Our only observations were that for a restaurant of this caliber, the servers needed to be more consistent in describing each tasting served. At one point the sommelier had to jump in and tell us what we were eating. The servers also took an order for more bread three times, and yet it was never brought to the table. Attention to every little detail and consistency in such establishments is very important.
Finally, we did not appreciate the additional fee on our bill to tip the kitchen staff, not that they don't deserve it or that we didn't want to pay it (which we did), but this should be built into the cost of doing business. Restaurant owners need to pay their staff accordingly, no one denies they work hard making sure everything is perfect. It felt as though we were giving alms to the poor and that did not sit well with us.

Once an institution the restaurant is beginning to show some wear from the asthetic to the dishes. In need of a refresh soon the staff seems hurried and the food just so so they have lost their edge on sophisticated French cuisine. Try another restaurant if you're looking to spend the minimum $98 per person for five courses.

If you want a dining experience come here for the 8 course and wine pairings. David was our captain and incredibly attentive. They check on you but never interrupt your conversation. Came here for our first Wedding Anniversary, they gave us a special table and it was lovely. Accommodated all of my husbands allergies and was able to do the 8 course too!
