Leopold's Gasthaus is a restaurant serving Bavarian cuisine in San Francisco, California. Guests will find that Leopold's offers the same warm and cozy ambiance that one might find in any traditional gasthaus in northern Italy, Austria or Bavaria. Handmade pine booths and a central communal dining table fill the homey space, as paintings and pictures of old-world European life decorate the walls. The food at Leopold's is simple and rustic, but brings a depth of flavor that belies its seemingly humble ingredients. We are a small neighborhood restaurant who will except walk-ins and also add to our wait list if reservations are full.
I expected authentic German/Austrian food. The beer menu is great and the service is very nice. The taste of the food is lacking. We brought some German friends and a surprise to give them a bit of home fare in SF. We were all quite disappointed in the appetizers and entries. It's an American twist on German food. The space is nice and friendly so I would only return for the atmosphere.
Leopold's is as close to a small restarurant experience in Bavaria. The friendliness, ambiance, decor and food quality is exactly right. The beer selections are excellent. They consistently deliver a great dining experience. I always look forward to going there and they always deliver.
Take a trip to Salzburg, Austria and be home to sleep in your own bed! Authentic Austrian cuisine complete with Oompa-pa music. The Jaegerschnitzel is my favorite but I must admit all other dishes look amazing too! The Mac n Cheese dish will knock your sox off made with real cheese and portioned large enough for the table to share! When you need an authentic Salzburg Steigl Beir, this is the place in San Francisco! Tasty, memorable and you will leave full!
We’ve been several times, but we’re really disappointed with our last visit. The food wasn’t prepared the same, had to ask the kitchen to finish making the food, was charged for items from another table, and was mislead about the price of our beer. Waiter didn’t seem interested in correcting issues. Felt like we were at a large chain restaurant. Wouldn’t recommend, or return.
The food and beer is amazing here. It was a bit loud and rowdy but I guess that’s to be expected when they serve beer in boots!
We joined old friends to celebrate birthdays and an anniversary. We were greeted at the door by staff like old friends. The food was as wonderful as we remembered. The beer choices were fabulous. The place filled with young folk enjoying themselves. It was another great night. My short ribs and red cabbage were perfect.
Great food and atmosphere. But service was not the best. We asked for water which never came. And no one asked us if we needed more refills even though our glasses were empty. Every time we’d try to flag someone down, they’d just pass us by. We left very thirsty.
We really loved the atmosphere of this place. Great location and off the beaten path, so not a lot of tourists. Food was really good and our server, Maggie, was very knowledgeable about the menu. She was great helping me choose between items. Looking forward to our next visit!
An overall great experience. Will definitely return when we're back in SF.
A great neighborhood restaurant - and as expected the noise level was at its peak - since
we were there between 7:30 9:00 -- on a Thursday --
The food was quite tasty and service was great ---
Great food. Staff was very friendly. Good atmosphere. It was a lot of fun and they didn’t rush us.
Really delicious food. So glad they take reservations now. A truly neighborhood gem.
Staff were attentive to our needs. Reservations are recommended as the place was busy on the Friday night; we booked earlier in the afternoon. The food was excellent. Ambiance was great with lots of energy in the restaurant. Loved all the decorations on the walls and mantles.
A great place to eat and meet NEW friends in San Francisco. The beer is perfect. I had a BOOT of a time.
Cute German restaurant with friendly and very efficient service!
We have been to many German restaurants in many cities and countries. Leopolds is ok. A bit cramped in space and overpriced. But I guess that also has to do with it being in San Francisco. Ambiance was ok. Service was good. Food tasted well.
My new favorite German place in SF. The food and service were the bomb! Can’t wait to go back.
This is always a fun spot to grab a beer and some german stample foods.
Hard to find real German food in SF. And the beer--wonderful. Try everything, all is delicious.
Seriously one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time.
Excellent food and hosts—Klaus is the best! We’ll be back!
Casual German style restaurant best for high energy and noisy conversation and not a “fancy date”. Overall a fun place and the food was authentic and good. Big portions.
Recommend only if you want a loud experience, which is what we expected. Food was okay (goulash was pretty good but schnitzel was just okay.
Love this place. Great food and beer.
Best meal I've had since Oktoberfest in Munich!
The experience and food was fine. But jeez was this place loud. Like the loudest restaurant I've ever been to in my life.
This is a very authentic german restaurant in America run by two Austrian brothers.
I can't say enough. The meats are delish. Usually I hate sauerkraut. Here it's
mellow and tender and yummy. Everything rocks. german beer on tap.
Nice German restaurant with a Bavarian feel. Good German food and beer.
It is somewhat on the pricey side; but the food, beer and service are worth that and more. Very authentic and hardy food with a few unique twists. The tap has an awesome and unique selection. The service and ambiance were a tad understated but perfectly suited for the style of restaurant. 5/5 would definitely go back again.
We really love Leopolds. If you want Austrian Mountain food go there. You won’t leave hungry. Promise.
We love Leopold's! We live in the neighborhood and stop by regularly. The food is great, as is the beer, the ambiance is just what you'd want in an Austrian restaurant, and the staff and owner are lovely. It never disappoints.
This is a fun restaurant. You are greeted the minute you walk in by the owner. You feel very welcomed. The cuisine is very specifically German/Austrian, with a lot of pork and potatoes. We ordered a salad that was outstanding with very fresh greens and sliced apple with watercress and arugula and a nice light dressing that was tasty. I ordered the Choucrute Garni and my friend ordered the short ribs with mashed potatoes. We each shared each others entree. A bottle of red wine was reasonably priced. We both enjoyed it but to me this is a cuisine only once every 6 months.
There's no better place to host a small celebration. We scheduled for early evening on a weekday and they were very accommodating to our reservation and some changes to it. Prive for drinks keeps them flowing, but the price for food is a bit more restrictive. Worth every penny though - it's delicious. Just the right amount of festive.
This was out 7th visit, all have been superior food and service!
Amazing food, as usual. Cozy and fun atmosphere and great service.
The best Schnitzel in San Francisco, it is just right. Of course it has a very nice Bierstube feeling, nice staff always willing to serve and a very complete beer assortment to please any palate. Have been going for a few years and their quality is consistent, and now you can reserve through OpenTable, so I am delighted.
Service was poor
Staff couldn’t have been better— super friendly and helpful. Beer was great. Food was quite good. It felt like a real German pub. Everyone in the place seemed to be having a great time.
Outstanding service, great beer selection. The food was a little pricey for what it was, but that it is SF, so higher prices are expected.
