Legal Sea Foods - Short Hills
Our restaurant is located inside The Mall at Short Hills on the lower level. You may choose to beach yourself in our dining room or at our bar. Either way, we’ll think you walk on water - be sure to see our aquarium of koi fish built into the floor.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.
We’ve received a boatload of accolades including being named “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” in a nationwide poll by USA Today (2013) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Excellent lunch. Value proposition supported.
We miss the choice of sides on the old menu.
Great rainbow trout dish my favorite. Good sea food
We come to Legal Seafood for the oysters. They were great.
Loved this place but they now changed the menu and took our favorite items off. Server did not pay attention to how food was requested.
All around disappointed!!
Dinner was excellent. I ordered the grilled shrimp with garlic and requested a substitution of sauteed spinach instead of pasta and the chef was able to make the switch.
Great dinner reunion.
Simply awful! Had reservations for 6:15pm, when checking in at 6:10, we were told that the table wouldn’t be available for 30 to 45 minutes. Completely ridiculous when we had made reservations. We checked in again at 6:45 and were then told that it would be another 30-45 minutes to get a table.
My wife decided to take a seat at the bar and we had her Mother’s days dinner at the bar!
Not a word of apology or let us buy you a drink.....
Awful experience and Bonefish restaurant will get our business in the future
Only thing i didnt like was the crazy wait times even for reservations m...
I had a reservation for 4:30 pm for 4 people. The restaurant must’ve overbooked along with allowing walk-ins because by the time I got there the greeter indicated they were behind on reservations. I was told it would be a 25-30 minute wait. My family weren’t seated until nearly 6:00pm. The food was good. And the waiter was nice when he was around. At the end of the meal our bill was given to us and we ended up waiting nearly 25 minutes for the check to be picked up. Seemed like there was very poor planning for a busy day such as Mother’s Day.
The server we had did not acknowledge us to much and he did not pay attention to the payment method and I'm very upset
Went for Mother’s Day. The restaurant was very crowded, but our reservation was right on time. Service was terrific for a busy day and the food was very good. Cocktails were also great.
After 6 consecutive years of celebrating Mothers Day with wife, Mother-in-law, son... alas... today was not memorable. Arrived 10 minutes early for my 2pm reservation.... then waited 25 minutes, standing, only to hear them seat same-size party with a 2:15 reservation ahead of us. I brought this to their attention- and was told... “well sir, they arrived earlier than you”.
We we then seated in far back... in children’s section... and leaf if table kept falling into my seated thighs... baby strollers bumping my chair.
The food has dropped in quality... dishes arrived with over wrought sides.... a sign of faux creativity at th expense of simple high quality.
Given that I dropped $350 for 4.... this was my last celebration at this venue.
Next year... a nice French restaurant perhaps
Haven’t been to Legal Seafood in years but it’s still good maybe not as good in the past but still worth the trip. Service was good ... Waiter was very nice. Music was way to loud. People have to talk over it which makes it even louder. Value ... a little over priced.
We are regulars. The menu has been re-written, choice of sides on grill menu eliminated.
The specials are usually the best value. Even knowing the salmon special was overpriced, I ordered it to see what the deal was. The wild caught salmon was very good but the carrots and potatoes did not constitute an effort to make me glad I was getting salmon that cost more than halibut. Asparagus at least.
It was not bad, well prepared as always and I don’t want a bigger portion...that was fine. But the value proposition at LSF took a serious hit today. We will come here less and support some of the family owned restaurants in the area.
We headed for quick meal after shopping. Our reservation was a little later and we finished shopping earlier than expected. The staff of Legal was very kind in finding us a table almost 90 minutes earlier on a busy evening. I know how difficult that can be but they pulled a rabbit out of the hat, and I am ever so grateful for their efforts. Our dinner was wonderful, great Caesar salad and Maine steamers to start. The halibut and cioppino entrees were really delicious and my cioppino requested fra diovolo, came out just that way. Over the years, we have had most of the servers at one time or another. Each and everyone of them, who have waited on us were no less than cordial, attentive and eager to make our dining experience positive. Many often stop to at our table to just say hi and we love that! Keep up the good work, Legal.
The food was excellent, the service was outstanding! Our waiter gave excellent recommendations and details about the food and desserts. I asked for flowers ahead of time on Open table and the waiter notified me immediately that there were no flowers. My only recommendation would be is if the restaurant knew they can not accommodate a request they should notify the customer prior to coming. Especially if the customer has a specific reservation time. It may have made a difference to improvise.
This is the place to come for fresh fish and great service. Softshell crabs were on the menu and one of us preferred a simpler presentation, and the chef was happy to oblige!
Food was good but way overpriced. Servers on a Monday night have been the less experienced staff, pleasant but not attentive . Restroom needs serious attention with repairs and cleanliness. Will return.
Our waiter was excellent and the food was delicious!
My husband and I each ordered the curried shrimp and a Cesar salad. The salad was good but we did not like the curried shrimp. Service was fine.
The prices have been substantially raised. $33 for a Lobster Roll which wasn’t told by server. Wine list has been cut in half.
One appetizer -fish tacos was not hot and pretty bland - Shrimp cocktail shrimp not very big but scallops and halibut steak were great.
Ice cold and delicious shrimp cocktail, love the lite clam chowder here which caters to allergies, it’s gluten free, dairy free, egg free...a nice treat for those of us with allergies. The rolls are also vegan and delicious! Hubby loved the Arctic char, brother and son loved the wings and shrimp tacos, great lunch! We will be back.
Good as usual
Service was quick, waitress was polite, friendly, and professional.Food were great.
Our server, Ian, was spot-on!
Service was impeccable.
New more limited menu. Quality of food was poor. Strange as we eat here all of the time.
“House Salad” with added salmon: the salad consisted of partially wilted greens, and 4 halved cherry tomatoes.
Our waiter was amazing!! Everything was perfect and delicious.
We have eaten at this Legal Seafood restaurant a number of times in the past. We had a reservation for 2pm. We entered at 1:55pm and we were greeted warmly at the door. We were led to a booth for two. Our waitress, Jenny, came over and told us she would be with us in a few minutes. It may be a small thing, but it's important to be recognized by your waitress as soon as you settle into your seats. The atmosphere was excellent. Even though it was packed, you could still hear the music wafting over the voices of the patrons. Jenny was superb. She took our orders and the food was exquisite, as usual. When we completed our meals, my wife had a doggie bag and I took home a steak dinner. I mention this because when we ate the food the next day, it was delicious, as though we were right in the restaurant. Even though the mall was packed, based on the available FREE parking spaces, my wife and I will be back! I would recommend the Short Hills Legal Seafood restaurant for anyone looking for a great meal at a reasonable price with a fantastic ambiance and a great wait staff! Bon appetit!
Food and service were super. Had Fisherman's stew and crab cake -- both great.. Waiter was great as well
I really enjoyed the setting of legal seafoods, and our server was very helpful. Would recommend to a friend/family member.
Great food and service. Had an small issue with an entree and it was handled quickly and professionally. The Caesar salad was crisp and well dressed, the Cioppino was excellent, spicy as requested and shellfish was cooked to perfect tenderness. Our server was attentive and responsive to our dining needs. It was a nice evening.
My wife and I love the stuffed lobster side dish. Service is always pristine.
We had lunch. It was my birthday. I got 3 complementary bon bon for my birthday. I had lobster salad. Very delicious. They don’t mind making the food your way. Great service. Very enjoyable. We will go back.
Top notch service (as always) and great food. Initially, my Tuna was slightly overcooked. Waiter was extremely gracious, took the plate and the kitchen was very efficient in getting out replacement cooked to the right level. In the meantime the waiter brought over chowder to tie me over. Totally unnecessary but appreciated.
Renowned restaurant has long hit the skids. Chalky chowder, limp fries, soggy scallops. And a dirty bathroom. Poorly trained staff. Ugh, never going back
The portions here were much smaller than any Legal Sea Foods I have been too and the quality of the food wasn't what I was expecting. We got a bowl of the lobster bisque each that was only sprinkled with very small pieces of lobster.
