Legal Sea Foods - Short Hills
Our restaurant is located inside The Mall at Short Hills on the lower level. You may choose to beach yourself in our dining room or at our bar. Either way, we’ll think you walk on water - be sure to see our aquarium of koi fish built into the floor.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.
We’ve received a boatload of accolades including being named “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” in a nationwide poll by USA Today (2013) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Truly outstanding food
Anniversary lunch and first time back since the renovation. Aside from the oysters which never disappoint, we were unimpressed with the food.
Nice food at a convenient location. The service was excellent too. The only downside is the relative small space inside.
Good atmosphere, definitely kid friendly. The Thanksgiving turkey special has been a little off lately, the meat was dry and on the bland side, not enough gravy. Seafood is really their specialty.
New decor has issues: noise levels, small tables, less intimate.
My husband and I Love Legal Seafood. This was our first visit to the Short Hills location. We normally go to the Paramus location.
Well, the restaurant in Short Hills was totally different from the Paramus one. It is so modern and futuristic. In fact it was beautiful.
The Thanksgiving dinner offered for the holiday was enormous and delicious. My husband really enjoyed it.
I am a Rainbow Trout fan so I elected the grilled trout with the garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach.
(Have to confess, I always have this same dinner when we go to Legal Seafood and I am never disappointed).
The ousters were fresh and as usual great.
We highly recommend Legal Seafood for anyone wanting to experience a wonderful dinning experience!
Excellent Thanksgiving meal! Renovation is beautiful!
When LSF/SHM reopened the menu looked new. There was some shuffling on the menu but everything is more or less the same including the quality. We cannot at home prepare scallops and swordfish the way they are done here. Plus, we don’t have them every day. Look at the prices in the store. LSF is a good value. We loved it. Reminds us of CIA.
I’m one of these crazy people who works all the time, no vacation. Dinner at LSF is a real pleasure and a break that means a lot. Thanks to everyone including the server and the great know-how back at the grill station.
The redesign feels like a loud sports bar which is a shame
It was our first time back after the remodeling. Things have not changed for the best.
1 - the decor - the entrance still says “raw bar” - but none was obvious. This is why people come. Very stark with bar taking up a huge amount of space. Exposed light bulbs were so intense that one’s eyes needed to be shaded to eat (especially before they were dimmed for dinner hours) Spot lights were also positioned so that when one was seated, they were so intense and one’s eyes.
2- the menu is pared down so no specials are shown and one needs to ask the server for the oysters available that night and their origin and description. One must memorize this while one studies the menu and decides what else to eat. Legal used to offer a selection of side options. That is no longer on the menu so one assumes that the dishes are only as printed. When the server came, she asked what sides we would like and offered all the same that used to be on the old menu. It would have been nice to have known that beforehand. When I told the server I would like the sides as stated on the menu for my dish she did not know what those were and I had to point it out on the menu. She was nice but the whole ordering process with the new menus is a disaster and does not lead to a good experience.
3- the food- still very tasty but now that everything, even the raw bar, comes out of a back kitchen, it does not add to the feeling of getting something fresh and special just opened and prepared for you.
4 - your dining customers are paying a pretty high price for the food. When we were there a group came in, sat at the bar, ordered drinks and proceeded to open a Cheesecake Factory take out bag and eat that food with their drinks. Is that good? You tell me.
5- it is not usual to spend well over $ 100.00 before tip for a dinner for two. Lots of wrinkles need to be ironed out before the new Legal’s gets a next trip from us.
Great service and delicious food. Perfect place for a family gathering at a table of seven.
The service made this meal. Thank you!
I appreciated the remodel of Legal Sea Foods in Short Hills as well as the efficient and friendly service by our server Viktoria. She made great recommendations and accommodated our requests. Wonderful atmosphere, food, service and a special night celebrating my birthday. Thank you!
The fish was very oily this time , due to weekend I assume. I took fish and chips
It seems as thought the menu has been reduced. There was a small selection to choose from. I ordered the chicken dish which i know...ordering chick at a seafood restaurant is not the best idea. i was very disappointed as the chicken has a very gamey taste & the dish overall reminded me of hospital food. I will not be going back.
Remodeled restaurant so ambiance is a bit more engaging. Food was fantastic, portion of fish and chips good value for money. Service was exceptional on s busy Saturday lunchtime.
Recently renovated w multiple, variably sized and shaped booths-sone elevated-with an active centrally located bar scene with numerous video monitors.and aloud music background. New, well trained and accommodating wait staff. Excellent grilled salmon over Ceaser salad. First time for sandy light clam chowder however, but still my go to for dining at the mall.
Had a very nice lunch...
New decor is very nice. Service was friendly but the waiters perhaps had too many tables. Perhaps the season meant there was no fresh sheet on the fish.
Food was and service were nothing more than mediocre
The atmosphere in the restaurant has changed due to a renovation. The back of the restaurant felt very sterile and diner like. It was not comfortable in the back tables/booth.
Our waiter, Kathryn was wonderful. Our table was waiting for us
We have gone to Legal Seafood six times now because my husband wants good seafood. We will not be back. At all six meals I did not like the spice/flavor of my food. This time my husband found the lobster (his normal go to meal) inedible. We can't afford to spend $100 on a lunch that neither of us like. In addition, we were seated at the first booth inside the front door. Every couple minutes we were frozen by people holding both sets of doors open and the 20 degree outside weather was welcomed inside.
The remodel looks great. There is a great vibe happening. Found it very inviting and welcoming.
Haven’t been here in a while and the entire dining room and bar has been reconfigured in modern decor. Unfortunately the counter at the bar is gone as as well as the 2-tops. Private dining room is gone. I was seated alone at a 4-top. Learned that there are fewer tables since the rehab. Soup portion was smaller. So was house salad.
Came here w my 3 kids for Tue dinner. Kids split a fish n chips meal, grilled salmon meal and a salad. I had the halibut steak and a glass of wine (recommendation by waiter). For dessert, kids split the sundae. Also, ordered a cippioni to go. Food was good, service was better- overall we enjoyed dinner. Thank u.
Very good, as always, and great customer service. The renovations are also really nice.
The Short Hills location has been renovated and has a different style to it. The food is still great, but the style is a little too lively for what we look for in a dinner location. It has become more of a sports bar, not a fine dining location.
It was wonderful. As usual it was great food and service.
Love the remodeled dining room
I thought the service was pretty poor. While I was waiting for my party to arrive the server took about 15 minutes to come to the table and even ask me if I wanted something to drink. We weren't a needy group but we waited for a while to be asked if we wanted dessert and we had to flag her down for the check..
The restaurant has been remodeled improving the noise level immeasurably.
The renovation is lovely. Location is great. When they first opened YEARS ago they were awesome. Quality is iffy. Cold, pale mini rolls ,unappealing and served on a small dessert plate .No Crackers, bread sticks, variety of breads, I had the smoked salmon on toast ...needed a magnifying glass to find the THIN salmon slices. Thought I was getting actual avocado but the avocado was an almost invisible spread on the toast. The tuna melt was on pita bread and needed a fork and knife. ...French fries typical frozen variety. The scrod overcooked and served with way overcooked broccoli. Service was very slow and server never asked if we needed anything else or how our meal was.
Remodeling looks nice but does not make up for how poor the presentation and quality of the meal for the price charged. Disappointing this used to be a fantastic restaurant.
The new decor is pleasant and refreshing from the old style however the place feels as crowded as ever. The bar is nice to sit for a casual dinner.. not crazy about the dining areas. Unfortunately the great food that you could always rely on is not to be found. A few favorites are still on the menu and the food is good but not great. My husband and step daughter both ordered a salad with salmon on top .. the portion was pathetic.. it couldn't have been 4oz at best. Wait staff seems lost like everyone is on their first day.. prior experience was always top notch.. seems like Legal Seafood is just another mediocre chain restaurant and not the excellent dining experience we always expected ...sad. and with the huge bar and TVs they apparently needed to tap into the sports bar mentality... Not a great choice for atmosphere.
The place is good for a cocktail and cold shellfish. Everything but the chowder is a let down especially the mains. Like a diner. Not a great seafood restaurant. The pasta with seafood is swimming in greasy butter and not nice to eat. How about a bowl of good pasta with truffle when in season or some fresh seafood on top not boiled or broiled in ready butter. With a little imagination and a good chef or manager the food could be so easily be tops. The refit is nice but the menu is boring.
Experience was fine. Food was so-so
Legal Seafood - Short Hills NEVER disappoints. Food, drink and service always even and I love the renovations. Very chic!
Outstanding service and very fresh food! Renovation looks good too
Very good service and food. We had lunch there. My only suggestion is the lunch menu could have been little more selection of salads, fish. Lots of tacos and fried food which I don’t like The ice cream bons bons were delicious.
