About Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill

The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.

One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.

Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.

We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” (USA Today, 2013), “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Worst calamari ever. Went on Saturday night. The calamari came out in "clusters"...like tentacles all stuck together. Only four "rings" (Usually, one gets mostly rings and only a couple of tentacles). They were over battered and over fried. Had to send them back. Steamed broccoli is barely steamed (had to ask for it to be cooked longer). Server was great but clearly overworked. This location is going through a transition but needs to get its act together. It's living off past glory and the rest of the world has caught up with better food, better service, and more creative menus.

Perfect dinner for a Saturday night before another snow storm. The Bang Bang Cauliflower and Cajun-grilled swordfish were just what we needed to warm us up.

Consistent in quality and good service. The restaurant would be even better if it were to freshen its decor and ventilation system. They sate family friendly which is wonderful.

I've been eating at Legal Seafood since the original one in Inman Square. You can't beat Legal for great seafood and delicious rolls. Old favorites like clam chowder and crab cakes are the best around. Even unexpected dishes like shrimp pad thai are delicious if not authentic.

The servers are always friendly and efficient. The Chestnut Hill Legal Seafood is worth a drive.

Great food and awesome service. The manager came around to check that everything was going well, which was appreciated. My 94 year old father could not have enjoyed himself any more than he did.

I normally like Legals, but this was a huge disappointment. To be somewhat fair, it was a Saturday evening and it was busy. Had a 7:30 reservation and wasn't seated until almost 8pm. From there on we were rushed by the wait staff and manager. Had salads and entree. We were only half way done with the salads when the food came out - fried fisherman's platter for me, Salmon for my wife. The manager brought the fried food out way too early. I moved my salad to the side to make room and the waiter tried to take the salad, sticking his thumb in my dish in the process. Offered to "keep my food warm" while I finished my salad. Everyone knows fried food needs to be eaten right away. I took it right then, but , alas, it was already soggy. Clams were mush and inedible;calamari was soggy; white fish and scallops were good. When my wife's salmon came out the waiter took just took her salad without asking, even though she was not finished. Her salmon was good as was the rest of her dish. While noisy, that is to be expected on a Saturday evening, but the poor service( and planning) and treatment is not.

It may just be the Legal Sea Food at Chestnut Hill but on the occasions when I have gone there I have not found the food up to par. I recently had fish and chips and it was definitely over cooked. I don't feel I am overly fussy but I do want a decent meal, especially for the prices that Legal Sea Food charges.

As usual, Legals did not disappoint, The food was excellent as was the service. This was Shrimp special time, one of the dishes we had was Shrimp Pad Thai - fantastic. We wish it were part of the regular menu. Service was very good. All in all, an outstanding dinner at a reasonable price.

I was surprisingly disappointed in my experience at this Legal Seafood Restaurant. I had previous good experiences before at Legal C in Legacy Place and previous locations in terms of food, friendly and attentive service, but unfortunately this time was different. Of all the dishes served, the clam chowder and crab cake appetizers were tasty and satisfying. The regular calamari appetizer was overly breaded and had a stuffy feel after eating. My lemon caper sole main course was a sloppy piling of over breaded fillets over tasteless mound of poorly cooked white rice. The fish was very salty. The rice tasted like the leftover crusted rice from the bottom of the rice cooker.

Been here dozens of times. They don't always get the food right the first time, but by all means if what's served is not exactly the way you like it tell the server right away.

Went there for my husband's birthday which I mentioned on open table reservation and I called day of. They tried to seat us in the back amidst large groups with young children, but moved us when I asked. The waiter brought the wrong wine selection, which my husband drank anyway. He also did nothing to acknowledge my husband's birthday. The food was fine, but what a letdown for a celebration birthday dinner.

Food is always good here. Sat at the bar to eat this time, and we were very well taken care of by a terrific staff. The restaurant itself is beginning to look dated, so we're looking forward to the new location!

Legal’s raw seafood and wine menu is always tops and this was no exception, but the other items we ordered were mediocre. The shrimp “pad Thai” was lacking in spice and flavor, and the grilled calamari was more like boiled. We’ll go back, of course, but probably not too soon.

Our waiter was very accommodating and food was hot when brought to the table. We all had a pleasant lunch but the noise level was a bit high and the 2 men with hearing issues found it hard to understand normal conversation. We find the parking to be problematic - always.

Having patronized Legal Seafood for many years, this was our most disappointing meal. There were hints of sand in a few of our dishes - steamers which we returned and got removed from our bill; the grilled scallops which was surprising. The famed clam chowder had fewer clams than usual. It’s upsetting that our go-to staple for seafood is declining.
