About Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.
We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” (USA Today, 2013), “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill Ratings and Reviews
Our waiter was very accommodating and food was hot when brought to the table. We all had a pleasant lunch but the noise level was a bit high and the 2 men with hearing issues found it hard to understand normal conversation. We find the parking to be problematic - always.
Having patronized Legal Seafood for many years, this was our most disappointing meal. There were hints of sand in a few of our dishes - steamers which we returned and got removed from our bill; the grilled scallops which was surprising. The famed clam chowder had fewer clams than usual. It’s upsetting that our go-to staple for seafood is declining.
This was a lovely dining experience with friends at our neighborhood seafood restaurant. It was a last minute decision to go out to dinner. We decided to choose the fun fare of a variety of fried fish entrees. Legal Seafoods was accommodating to all of us who chose combinations of fried foods that were not on the dinner menu to suit our preferences. I greatly appreciated this surprise allowance. I enjoyed the fried shrimp, calamari and white fish while two of my friends each ordered fried clams, shrimp and scallops with onion rings. I always love their bang bang cauliflower. My mother had the crab dip and chips. We each had delicious cocktails or wine. It was a delightful time for all of us with delicious food, excellent service and fun.
Food was not what I ordered. I ordered us halibut filet, instead, I got a halibut steak with large bones without informing me. The service and quality have deteriorated in this location. Waiters are poorly trained and the addition of assistants to bring the food without knowing who ordered what is frustrating. Dishes circulate around the table before arriving to destination.
We had a reservation at 8, arrived maybe 8:05 and were seated with menus, reasonably promptly - then nothing, no water, no drink order, not even "hi I will be your server but am busy and will be back soon". At about 8:25 I got up and found someone who was running food to a nearby table and asked who our server was. Shortly after a man arrived (described himself as "taking over") who was pretty attentive thereafter and provided good service. Food finally arrived at just after 9. My wife's fish pie was dry and stodgy - after a few mouthfuls she sent it back - the replacement was delivered just as the rest of us were finishing our meals - this time it was more moist and palatable. My seared tuna sashimi was more seared than sashimi. We have eaten at several Legal Seafoods in and around Boston - we generally enjoy the experience. Unfortunately I have to say that if this is what I based my expectation of Legal Seafood on then we would not return.
Legal in Chestnut Hill is our families favorite restaurant for more than 40 years. When our Georgia family comes to town we always have a lunch at Legal starting with their amazing onion strings, one daughter must have the tuna sashimi, my son in law and other daughter must have the lobster roll, the grandchildren feast on a whole lobster and fish and chips, I usually have the grilled shrimp and everyone leaves very happy on a full stomach.
Waiter was so-so forgot the salad and one drink. Setting was minus the knife. Charged for a free dessert. Food was okay, nothing special.
Mostly we had a REALLY loud bunch of business guys in suits at the table next to us on a Saturday night for an intimate birthday for my girlfriend and they ruined the entire dinner. We could barely hear each other to talk to one another. It really sucked. Will be a long long time before I ever eat at a Legal's again.
All four members of are our group ordered the fried seafood plate and the food was terrible. The seafood was fried to the point that it was so hard we could barely chew any of it. It was very dissapointing as we were celebrating a family member’s completion of his MBA graduate studies. The waitress was not friendly. I will never visit again.
Did not live up to memories and expectations. Service was excellent and the location offers plenty of parking but the food was overpriced and underwhelming. They list their fried clams as "petite" and they certainly were: we've had much larger and tastier fried clams during trips to Maine and NH.
Excellent food - our group of three sampled fish (of course) and beef. All were excellent. The service, from the hostess to the servers, was top-notch. That is, they were professional, yet down-to-earth and friendly. Legals always provides a dependable, superlative meal ... especially if you focus on their seafood fare.
