About Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.

Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill Ratings and Reviews
This location's food has been slowly going downhill for a year. The main courses are bland, thrown together in an unappetizing way, dry, and just... meh. For $105 before tip that doesn't include booze, I expect a little better taste and presentation than an Applebee's. The service is friendly, but the cleanliness (especially bathrooms, dear God) and the food are a major question mark. We keep giving it chance after chance to get better. Maybe when they move to the new location next door.
Very bad table given to our group. 2 items were different that the ones we had ordered. Once we got the food the waitress came 20 min after to check on our order. By that time we had half eaten our and did not want to wait for the correct order as that would have made other guests food cold. When you come to a place like this and spend this kind of money one expects the order to be perfect. She offered nothing in return of the mistake. Bad customer service.
A friend and I had a 2pm late lunch.
The food and the service was outstanding.
What was particularly nice is it was a slow time and the noise level
was much better than others times (primarily in the evenings).
p.s. I would come to this Legal Seafood restaurant much more frequently if the acoustics
worked better in general. It is much less enjoyable if you are at all hearing
challenged (and even if not).
The food was fine. However, the experience was marred by a malfunctioning "background" radio, which kept stopping and starting for most of the meal and was greatly annoying. We had to ask repeatedly to have the radio turned off; we even requested the manager after the server seemed unable to take care of this. Manager was no help either; he acted as though this was out of the restaurant's control.
Legal Seafood is a good place to eat. The choice I made for my entree was good though not terrific. We were seated at a large booth with an open side and it was a little hard to talk to the people across the table not because of high noise but because they were at a distance. Also our main dishes were delivered before we'd finished our salads. Maybe it was just a little not as good that night.
We had a sudden change of plans and decided to head to Legals because we know that the food is consistently excellent. We were under a time crunch and the waitstaff was great about accommodating our needs. The clam chowder never disappoints. The crabcake and salad was perfect. The fresh oysters were cold and briny and plump and absolutely delicious. The Nantucket scallop special was a treat. Their season is brief and we were lucky to come in at the right time. The waitstaff were attentive and knowledgeable, as always. We'll be back.
I am gluten free and they have a special food runner who handles all dishes made for allergies when being brought from kitchen to table. The batter they use is gf which means a lot of usually unavailable food are gf safe (and delicious) and their fryers are not cross contaminated. Everything was served in a timely fashion, not right on top of each other but also not making us wait super long for anything. When the kitchen sent out the wrong sides our waiter even had it fixed and new ones brought out in just a few minutes. Also, Our reservation was for our anniversary. The lighting was romantic and the waiter was amazing. He even brought us a special dessert for the occasion- on them.
None near me so always s treat to visit family in Boston area and dine with you. Delicious dinner and good way to celebrate my birthday. Would have been nice if the waiter had picked up on that and offered a dessert treat for me. We did order coffees and delicious bon bons.
Legal Sea Foods is always a crowd pleaser! The service was great; the only complaint I would mention is that my husband’s halibut was reasonably over-cooked. Don’ think this should happen at Legal, since seafood is their specialty and the prices aren’t cheap
(and my husband is an excellent cook who knows how halibut should be cooked). Finished with Key Lime pie and Boston Creme pie, both of which were excellent!
Great for my mom's birthday, it's her fav restaurant in Chestnut Hill. My pommagranite lemon drop (cocktail) was to die for, the shrimp dumplings were amazing as was the tuna tartar appetizer. The chowda was a little bland which was surprising since I usually love it. All in all a great night tho.
The last time I ate at this restaurant was 25 years ago when I lived in the area. The seafood offerings now seem more limited than I remember. The fish chowder and rolls are still very good. I had the grilled tuna catch of the day. I thought it was odd that it came with mushroom gravy. It gave me the impression I was eating beef instead of seafood. The restaurant is in a shopping plaza and you can only enter from the rear even though there are windows in the front. I walked around for a while before I figured out there was no front entrance and had to go to the rear of the mall to get in. A sign in the front stating you should go to the rear to enter would be most useful.
I've known of Legal Seafoods for many years, but a recent dinner there reminded me of what excellent New England food is served there. We were hosting a friend from Europe and he was also was very impressed by the food quality and the attentive and personable service by Phong, our Vietnamese waiter. We'll return again soon.
We went on a rainy Wednesday and the atmosphere was very lively and uplifting. We had baked stuffed lobster and grilled swordfish. Both dinners were excellent!!
Definitely coming back on our next trip to Boston. The waiter was friendly and provided great service.
We were seated at a small table in the corner by the bar; I realized later that there were lots of empty tables in the dining room; we were well dressed, so I not sure why the hostess gave us a second class table. Also, salads should have come out before the entrees but everything came together.
Fries dripping with grease on one meal and no mustard sauce on the crab cakes plus salad had soggy aging lettuce and no dressing.
Items were just dumped on the plates no thought to serving which resulted in cranberries mixed into crab cakes and fish soaking into fries.
Not up to par tonight
