About Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill
The signature dish at Legal Sea Foods – really fresh fish.
One of our first restaurants and still a popular lure, we are located on Route 9 in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. We are still keeping things fresh at our bar, our open dining room and in our take-out counter and Fish Market.
Legal Sea Foods has long proven that a consistent, high quality dining experience never goes out of style. With over 40 varieties of fresh fish and shellfish available throughout the year as well as an award-winning wine list, there’s no doubt why legions of fans have fallen hook, line and sinker.
We’ve received a boatload of accolades including “#1 Best Seafood Restaurant” (USA Today, 2013), “Most Popular Boston Restaurant” (Zagat, 2012/2013), “Best Seafood Restaurant” (Improper Bostonian, 2010), “Best Chowder” (Boston Magazine, 2010) and the honor of serving our legendary New England Clam Chowder at every presidential inauguration since 1981.

Legal Sea Foods - Chestnut Hill Ratings and Reviews
Food quality, wait staff starting from host To all wait staff , including seafood department put most all other Legal’s to shame. I have been a very loyal customer of Legal since original open in Inman Square.
Ps.. How does one get a loyal customer no wait card?
legals is always excellent and professional and consistent among all of their restaurant sites. staff is professional and accomodating. We (2 couples) were originally placed at a larger table which was not as convenient for cross-talk and were treated very respectfully and immediately our request for a different style ( more easily conversant) was changed.
the food was hot ( as were the plates) coming out and the veggies were steaming .
Victoria, our server was excellent. She noticed that were were sitting for awhile, my guess is approximately 10-15 minutes, and no one came over to help us. She was serving a nearby table. She came over and said that she wasn't our server, but noticed that we were sitting for awhile and asked if she could bring us something to drink. She was so nice and pleasant, that we asked her if she could be our server. She said yes. We were thrilled. She was very attentive to our requests. We had a very enjoyable evening. Thank you Victoria.
I've been to Legal Seafood many times. This visit wasn't the best. Our meals took an unusually long time to come. Three Greek salads and one brown rice bowl - seems like delivering them could've been quicker for these entrees.
I didn't love the dressing it came with. I'm not sure if it's the standard greek salad dressing - I think it was balsamic. I found it very tart.
The Greek salad was rather pedestrian. Lots of very finely chopped iceberg, a couple of olives, a few veggies, nothing special, though the presentation was lovely. I had a greek salad at another restaurant earlier in the week and it was spectacular. Lots of big cucumber and tomato chunks. Nice lemony dressing. I think Legal's can step up their greek salad game.
The grilled shrimp was delicious.
The gluten free rolls were the star of the meal for me. I'd love the recipe!
This is our main go-to restaurant. It's crowded after 6:30 but before that it's usually no problem. Same with parking but usually something available all the time. Fish always fresh and excellent and I suppose the other dishes are the same. Fresh fish retail market is a definite plus. Prices there tend to me a little higher than supermarkets but quality is well worth the small difference.
Best seafood in the area! In addition to other foods for non fish eaters. Food served hot! Rolls are fresh and soft better than they used to be. Normally the service is outstanding but this time it was lacking. Food arrives in a timely manner. Great selection.
The food was outstanding. My husband and I went there with one other for a Thanksgiving lunch. They both had the turkey dinner offering which they both raved about while I had scallops and sides. Delicious! I couldn't finish my meal as they gave an ample amount of food.
This location's food has been slowly going downhill for a year. The main courses are bland, thrown together in an unappetizing way, dry, and just... meh. For $105 before tip that doesn't include booze, I expect a little better taste and presentation than an Applebee's. The service is friendly, but the cleanliness (especially bathrooms, dear God) and the food are a major question mark. We keep giving it chance after chance to get better. Maybe when they move to the new location next door.
Very bad table given to our group. 2 items were different that the ones we had ordered. Once we got the food the waitress came 20 min after to check on our order. By that time we had half eaten our and did not want to wait for the correct order as that would have made other guests food cold. When you come to a place like this and spend this kind of money one expects the order to be perfect. She offered nothing in return of the mistake. Bad customer service.
A friend and I had a 2pm late lunch.
The food and the service was outstanding.
What was particularly nice is it was a slow time and the noise level
was much better than others times (primarily in the evenings).
p.s. I would come to this Legal Seafood restaurant much more frequently if the acoustics
worked better in general. It is much less enjoyable if you are at all hearing
challenged (and even if not).
The food was fine. However, the experience was marred by a malfunctioning "background" radio, which kept stopping and starting for most of the meal and was greatly annoying. We had to ask repeatedly to have the radio turned off; we even requested the manager after the server seemed unable to take care of this. Manager was no help either; he acted as though this was out of the restaurant's control.
Legal Seafood is a good place to eat. The choice I made for my entree was good though not terrific. We were seated at a large booth with an open side and it was a little hard to talk to the people across the table not because of high noise but because they were at a distance. Also our main dishes were delivered before we'd finished our salads. Maybe it was just a little not as good that night.
We had a sudden change of plans and decided to head to Legals because we know that the food is consistently excellent. We were under a time crunch and the waitstaff was great about accommodating our needs. The clam chowder never disappoints. The crabcake and salad was perfect. The fresh oysters were cold and briny and plump and absolutely delicious. The Nantucket scallop special was a treat. Their season is brief and we were lucky to come in at the right time. The waitstaff were attentive and knowledgeable, as always. We'll be back.
I am gluten free and they have a special food runner who handles all dishes made for allergies when being brought from kitchen to table. The batter they use is gf which means a lot of usually unavailable food are gf safe (and delicious) and their fryers are not cross contaminated. Everything was served in a timely fashion, not right on top of each other but also not making us wait super long for anything. When the kitchen sent out the wrong sides our waiter even had it fixed and new ones brought out in just a few minutes. Also, Our reservation was for our anniversary. The lighting was romantic and the waiter was amazing. He even brought us a special dessert for the occasion- on them.
None near me so always s treat to visit family in Boston area and dine with you. Delicious dinner and good way to celebrate my birthday. Would have been nice if the waiter had picked up on that and offered a dessert treat for me. We did order coffees and delicious bon bons.
