As always, excellent fresh fish, prepared in a classic straightforward manner. Superb crab cakes, haddock, grilled shrimp, sweet scallops. Clam chowder par excellence. Points off, however, in two areas: I ordered scallops "cooked through." They were not fully cooked. Some people like them this way. I do not. I had to send them back twice. We ordered strawberry shortcake for dessert. Quite poor. Stale, dense shortcake. Strawberries did not seem to be fresh. So...reliably excellent fish, but the poor dessert placed an unfortunate cloud over the experience.
The outside terrace overlooking the pond is quiet and beautiful.
Beautiful day. Sat on the patio
Although I enjoy Legal Seafood; the Chestnut Hill location since remodeling has a new venue where you can sit in the lounge or outside. However, when you make a reservation and request that venue it is never available. It would be nice if you could request it an get it.
I was disappointed with the limited menu. While the fish store had a great variety of items, the restaurant was limited to shellfish and only 3 or 4 varieties of fresh fish with different preparations available. I ended up ordering the fish chowder as my entree along with Rhode Island style calamari. The calamari was very good while the chowder tasty of too much flour to thicken the soup. Maybe is they used potatoes to thicken the chowder, the taste would have been better. Service was okay but when I looked for the waitress for my check, it was 20 minutes before someone appeared
Great early Saturday evening dinner. Lovely view from window seats in the bar area. Food was very good and service was excellent.
The food at Legal is always excellent and this location offers a very comfortable and pleasant experience. Located on the 2nd floor, the lounge area in particular is bright and cheerful - adds greatly to the overall enjoyment.
A group of five friends gathered for dinner and a reunion. We had so much fun telling stories and laughing. The service was impeccable and the food delicious. We savored two hours together and appreciated not being rushed to leave. Thank you for a memorable evening!
We had a lovely meal. The food was great and the wait staff were helpful and attentive.
For a Birthday! Great table which we requested and great hospitality!
Legal's is wonderfully consistent. Had broiled halibut and it was perfect. As always. The new setup in Chestnut Hill is nice. The vibe is lively but not loud and the views of Hammond Pond are a treat. I had a friend in from the mid west and thought immediately of Legal's -- a great place to get east coast seafood.
We are frequent visitors to Legal Seafood. Their food is excellent. However, this time the service was poor. We were not in a hurry, but it took some time for the wait staff to acknowledge us, took a while to get our drinks, and even longer to get our food. We will always come back to the restaurant because you can't beat it for seafood. Ironically their steak is very good as well.
Had a very pleasant lunch at Legal’s in Chestnut Hill. Food, service and ambiance made for a lovely Sunday visit with family.
The lobster bisque and Spicy Wonton dish were particularly tasty. The table sat the four of us very comfortably with the distance from other tables more than adequate.
Always great seafood. Wonderful night out with our family
As always, an excellent choice, but; I have been coming to this location for a very long time. It has now moved a few doors away and given up dining room space for the bar area; thereby making it a bit difficult to be seated in a timely basis.
I know I can always count on great food, excellent cocktails and fine wine at Legal. Have been dining there every since they came to Chestnut Hill more than 30 years ago
I ordered a Greek chopped salad with an appetizer order of crab cake. The chopped salad was huge and my friend and I wished we had shared one instead of ordering one each. At $10, the salad was a bargain. The crab cake, at $17.50, was a different story. It was a single little, oval croquette shaped thing. It had large pieces of crab, glued together with bland, mushy, 1950s-style breadcrumbs. Because they forgot to put the crab cake on the salad in the kitchen, they brought my crab cake on a naked little bread plate. Not even a piece of lettuce or a sprig of parsley to pretty it up a bit. They should have been embarrassed to put that boring, mushy little thing on the table at any price.
Excellent food. I had the Shrimp Broccoli and Rice which was huge as was my guest's crabcake sandwich. Great food, oversize portions (not helping the diet Roger B!) and skilled service. Great place for a business lunch!!
We’re big fans of Legal’s. All our food was very good except the butter beans we do not like and there should be other options like green beans and asparagus.
Food is always great, but the service falls short. Server didn't introduce himself so we confused him with the busperson. It still he rather be someplace else.
While we have been going to Legal Seafood since its early days in Inman Square, this is our first visit to the new building at Chestnut Hill. The view from the upstairs restaurant is somewhat nice and the room was only a little noisy at 5 pm on a Sunday. The food was, as always, spectacular. Really delicious steamed mussels and seafood casserole. The broiled salmon was a little dry but the extra sauce helped out. The prices just seem to inch up higher and higher each time we go but it is still worth it for a special night out. It is too expensive, however, for us to go on a regular basis.
Beautiful new space. Excellent food and service. I will be back
When we arrived at the restaurant we were seated immediately. The waiter was attentive, food very tasty, had enough to take home for lunch the next day. A very pleasant experience. Will return again.
Salmon encrusted with almonds was delicious as was the grilled trout. Our server was friendly, informative and attentive. Will be back!!!
All was good, but for the fact that I did not receive the wasabi on my tuna sashimi order. Disappointing.
The ambiance and the feeling of space in the new location is great, and the service was fine.
This dinner was everything we were hoping for - mainly fresh shellfish. Starting with oysters, followed by steamers and then muscles with fries, all were fresh and tasty. Our waiter was very accommodating as we went from one course to another. A little pricey, but overall fun and delicious.
We ordered a second round of drinks, waited 15 minutes. Entrees came and the drinks only came 5 minutes after the entrees. Many different people bringing things to the table was confusing and made it difficult to find out what happened to our drinks.
Great food, great service and overall delicious. Only criticism was the smell of fish as we walked upstairs. Coffee was delicious too. Don’t forget to order the warm chocolate pudding cake for desert
The food tasted good, but overall was not impressed with the service here. The hosts were not very welcoming or pleasant, our waitress wasn’t very attentive, the kitchen left out the crab cake in my crab cake combo dish and my father’s meal was forgotten about altogether!
This was a Tuesday night, so it’s not like the place was a zoo. Overall, we ended up paying way too much $ for what we ended up with. We were celebrating the birth of our new baby, but nothing felt special about the occasion.
Great experience, but you were mistaken, and sent me a notice that I missed my appointment. I called and corrected that and received apologizes.
Waitress had a problem with getting anything from the bar (and we had very few drink orders). Forgot about one request for another glass of wine which then arrived when dinner was done and totally forgot about another drink order, but managed to include it on the check. Ambiance? spotlight on one of our party was blinding and distracting plus trying to enjoy dinner even though it was crucial they swept around our chairs to get set up for the next day. Overpriced factory.
Prices keep going up. Portions keep getting smaller. And is not consistent with the legendary legal’s standards
Would have liked more attn from servers, for water etc
This place is a “must go to” for sure. The food is magnificent and the atmosphere is superb. Good for a special occasion or casual lunch/dinner. The fish and chips were great!
This location was moved and remodeled to a large dining room and a second dining room containing the bar. Al fresco seating is available on a 2nd floor patio for good weather. Legals has changed the menu significantly such that they no longer just offer a list of fish that you can have grilled with various sauces and a few sides selected from the list. Instead they have moved to having several fish entrees with particular sides (although you can still select sauces). There is no longer a list provided of available sides. The prices have all increased at least at this location. The cocktails we ordered were uninspired and pretty thin on the actual alcohol. The rolls had decreased in size from oval to round. Chowders are much more costly. Gone are the days of going to Legals for a reasonably priced perfectly grilled piece of fish and cup of chowder with onion strings.
Had an AWFUL Mother's Day experience at Legal's in Chestnut Hill. I had a reservation, I arrived 15 minutes early and they tell you, you have to wait until your reservation time to be seated. Reservation time comes up and they are trying to get the table ready (awful customer service). Waited in the Bar area, ordered drinks for myself, Mom & Sister, the Bartender over charges my Credit Card and it was declined for the remainder of the day (again, bad customer service). The service was very sub par, being it was Mother's Day they should have had more Staff working with better attitudes. Most likely will not ever go back to this Legal's Seafood location.
When I am seated at a restaurant (especially an overpriced one like Legal)&the first thing I notice is spotty silverware..I am already disappointed and this happens a lot and it's real simple to correct. There's this product called Calgon OR one can simply WIPE the silver when it is clean/wet but if it IS spotty..then the table-setter should NOT put it on the table! I also found a HAIR (NOT mine) on my napkin. I KNOW it wasn't mine cause I had JUST sat down at the table. Food was nothing to write home about nor was the service and the layout of the place is AWFUL/MUCH too cramped. I had two bad experiences simply due to the lack of room to walk in this place. I had to move to my left so my elderly mother could catch-up to me&apparently I was too close to someone's table (when I moved)&they weren't happy about it. On my way back from the ladies' room a server (w/ his back to me) was pouring water for a customer&completely blocking my path. Luckily, he did eventually realize I was behind him or I think he&I would've collided&I would've been covered in ice water. It is my husband who always chooses this restaurant. If the choice were up to me it would never be this place.
Got our reservation right away. Our server was great, attentive, and very accommodating. Mothers Day lunch at Legals has become a bit of a thing for my family so I'm glad the staff could make it happen.
Mother’s Day very good
